Unscripted studio Maxine Productions is adding to its executive team.

Anneka Jones has been named executive vp development and current at Maxine, which is part of Sony Pictures Television. The company’s productions include ID’s Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV and Prime Video’s Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story. Jones’ hiring marks a reunion for her with Maxine founder Mary Robertson; they previously worked together at Left/Right.

“Having been fortunate to work alongside Anneka for over a decade at Left/Right, I know firsthand the qualities for which she has become recognized around the industry,” Robertson said in a statement. “She is a dynamic, versatile executive and producer, capable of combining journalistic rigor with strong commercial instincts. Her addition marks a pivotal moment for Maxine, as we build on a wave of successes and invest in an ambitious nonfiction slate. I look forward to our next chapter together.

Maxine Productions, the nonfiction TV and film studio within Sony Pictures Television’s nonfiction group, has named Jones as EVP of development and current series, the studio announced Wednesday. In her new role, Jones will expand Maxine’s development slate, drive the company’s sales strategy and oversee current series and feature productions.

Maxine’s upcoming slate currently includes projects surrounding the Alexander Brothers, the high-profile real estate agents facing harrowing criminal allegations, as well as several upcoming series and features in development with Vox/New York Magazine, Rolling Stone and Buzzfeed, among others.

Jones was previously Chief Content Officer at The Circus producer Left/Right.

In the new role, she will be tasked with expanding the Sony Pictures Television-backed company’s development slate and will also oversee current series and feature productions.

Maxine Productions was founded by Mary Robertson, who previously worked with Jones when she was showrunner of The New York Times Presents, which was produced by Left/Right for FX. Its slate includes a series about Oren, Tal and Alon Alexander, two high-profile real-estate agents and their brother, who were recently charged with sex trafficking, that it is producing with Charlize Theron’s Secret Menu and Vox Media.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — Brazilian indie specialty channel network Sofa Digital will announce in Rio2C 2025 the launch of three new specialty channels on platforms of free advertising-supported streaming television (Fast) in Brazil.

Filmelier TV Esperanca, Filmelier TV Paixao and Filmelier TV Vida Real will be added to the Fast platforms Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels, Tcl Channels, Pluto TV and Roku Channels, Fabio Lima, CEO of Sofa, told Variety.

As the original Filmelier TV, the three new channels will feature programs with 24-hours of indie pics dubbed to Portuguese. Filmelier TV Esperanca (Hope) will have pics with plots centered on faith and the overcoming of difficulties. Filmelier TV Paixao (Passion) will offer romantic comedies, crime of passion plots and other films alike. Filmelier TV Vida Real (True Life) will have biopics, docs, and war and historical films, said Lima.

On Tuesday, the streamer Peacock revealed that it is finalizing a three-part docuseries on the saga of the former Grey’s Anatomy writer and executive producer, whose harrowing story of bone cancer inspired at least one storyline on the ABC juggernaut until it was cast into doubt starting in 2022. Anatomy of Lies will chart “the rise and fall of Grey’s Anatomy star writer Elisabeth Finch, whose jaw-dropping lies fooled Hollywood for years,” Peacock stated in a press release.

Hulu is giving the infamous Atlanta street party Freaknik the documentary treatment and it has plenty of people talking already. The streamer announced the project, formally titled "Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told," on April 6, which will see well-known music figures Jermaine Dupri and Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell as executive producers and Geraldine L. Porras as showrunner.

According to the documentary's logline, viewers will soon see how it "recounts the rise and fall of a small Atlanta Hbcu picnic that exploded into an influential street party and spotlighted Atl as a major cultural stage. Can the magic of Freaknik be brought back 40 years later?" A release date has not yet been announced.

While the wait for the Tom Cruise blockbuster’s streaming debut has been long, plenty will be happy to throw on the acclaimed sequel just in time for the holidays when “Maverick” starts streaming on Dec. 22.

When MTV brought back the home-exploring docuseries Cribs, it also welcomed the return of its familiar voice for many past seasons, SuChin Pak. The MTV News alum served as narrator for the popular series where celebrities open up their often wacky (or totally swanky) abodes, refrigerator doors, and bedrooms to show “where the action happens.” The series is a trip down memory lane for Pak, who first joined the network in 2001. Exclusive: As Jesse Collins Entertainment is ramping up unscripted production, CEO Jesse Collins has brought in ViacomCBS Director of Production Yanina Molina as VP of Unscripted Production.

She will oversee the production of all unscripted content and specials. Jce, best known as longtime producer of awards shows such as the BET Awards and Soul Train Awards, also is behind such unscripted series as Facebook Watch’s Cardi Tries, which is heading into its second season, as well as competition/game shows Hip Hop Squares and Rhythm & Flow, specials John Lewis: Celebrating A Hero and Amanda Seales I Be Knowin’, along with scripted miniseries such as The New Edition Story and The Bobby Brown Story.

This year has been big for Collins. In addition to executive producing the recent 2021 BET Awards through Jce, he also co-executive produced the Grammy Awards, The 2021 Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show and produced The 2021 Academy Awards.

Charlie Balducci, one of the earliest stars of MTV’s “True Life,” has died at the age of 44.

Balducci appeared on a 2002 episode of the docuseries titled “True Life: I’m Getting Married” and became one of its most memorable stars by yelling at a limo driver on his wedding day in front of the cameras.

Balducci’s mother told TMZ that her son passed away “unexpectedly” and without signs of illness on Saturday. He was found unresponsive in his bed by paramedics around 9 p.m. and was declared dead on the scene. Cause of death is still pending.

Balducci and his wife, Sabrina Balducci, sat down for an interview with “20/20” in 2013 to discuss their experience as one of reality television’s earliest stars. The couple said MTV’s cameras were following them for four months leading up to their wedding in 2001.

MTV's True Life series is going to the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. The network announced True Life Presents: First-Time First Responders, a new self-shot special spotlighting millennial volunteer first responders working through the coronavirus pandemic in New York City. True Life Presents: First-Time First Responders will follow Rhanell aka Nurse Barbie, a 31-year-old trauma nurse and Alex aka Ace, a 33-year-old Fdny Emt. Both with day jobs who then serve Throggs Neck Volunteer Ambulance Corp, the Bronx's only volunteer Emt squad. According to MTV, Rhanell and Alex each have layered reasons for risking their lives in order to save others. "I feel like there's more that I could do,"...

David Valentine Osper, a longtime executive producer and showrunner for MTV, VH1 and History, has died. He was 47.

Opser died December 30 of cancer in Los Angeles.

Most recently serving as VP Unscripted Development at MTV, his roster of producing and exec producing credits stretches from the early 2000s to last yea. It includes signature cable series Road Rules and Ancient Aliens, along with Love Lounge, Music Behind Bars, Homewrecker, Storage Hunters, Buckwild and True Life.

Before launching his entertainment industry career, Osper worked as a video game designer for Activision and elsewhere.

Osper is survived by his parents, Sharon and George, and siblings Carrie and Jason. A public memorial service will be held at the Marina del Rey (CA) Hotel at 2 p.m. Sunday, January 26. Contributions may be made to a fund in his name at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

MTV is expanding its “True Life” franchise with the upcoming docuseries “True Life Crime,” which is set to debut on the Viacom cable network in January.

Led by Dometi Pongo of MTV News, “True Life Crime” will investigate the “shocking and haunting crimes committed against young people,” according to MTV’s description of the series, “daring to ask unanswered questions that expose the truth.”

The eight-episode series is set to premiere on Wednesday, Jan. 8 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt. It is produced by Left/Right, Karga 7 Pictures and ITV America’s Good Caper Content for MTV.

Showtime is developing a half-hour dramedy based on Jacob Tobia’s memoir, Variety has learned exclusively.

Tobia is a non-binary Lgbtq rights activist, actor, producer, and author. Their memoir, “Sissy: A Coming-of-Gender Story,” was published earlier this year by Putnam Books at Penguin Random House. The series, currently titled “Sissy,” would follow Tobi Gibran, a non-binary college grad and full time gender weirdo from North Carolina. Tobi moves to New York City in search of queer utopia. Though they score a prestigious job at the Un, Tobi quickly learns that NYC is less “glittering trans paradise” and more “trash-filled hell with a side of street harassment.”

Tobia will co-write and co-executive produce the project, with Michael Lannan set to co-write in addition to serving as executive producer and showrunner. “Sissy” will be produced by Showtime and Legendary Television Studios.

We may not have seen the last of America's favorite losers just yet, as Beavis and Butt-head creator Mike Judge is teasing bringing them back in a new movie. Speaking at WarnerMedia's party for the Television Critics Association, Judge was asked about the status of a potential Beavis and Butt-head revival, as he's teased his desire to return to the show in the past. Now, Judge says Paramount is apparently interested in a Beavis and Butt-head Do America follow-up movie, and better yet, he already has something in mind for Beavis and Butt-Head 2. "They seem to be still interested in that," Judge says. "I've got some ideas. I think it would have to be something that makes it relevant today. I think I might've figured out a way to do that."

Bravo reveals the premiere date for Season 9 of “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” and Johnny Weir is among new cast members for Netflix’s “Spinning Out.”

Bravo Media’s “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” returns for Season 9 on Feb. 12 at 9 p.m. Erika Girardi, Dorit Kemsley, Teddi Mellencamp Arroyave, Kyle Richards, Lisa Rinna, and Lisa Vanderpump are joined by new housewife Denise Richards and friend Camille Grammer this time around.

MTV’s docuseries “True Life” will return with a new franchise “True Life/Now” set to premiere Jan. 2 at 10 p.m. Four episodes will uncover stories of real people immersed in today’s biggest social phenomena ranging from Kardashian fanaticism to photo filter addiction.

Exclusive: Former Real Housewives of New York cast member Carole Radziwill has signed with Verve in all areas. Verve has also recruited veteran producer Bill Thompson to bolster the agency’s growing unscripted space.

Radziwill exited Housewives in July after six seasons and will appear on Part 3 of the reunion episode tonight on Bravo. She is an Emmy-winning journalist, New York Times bestselling author and TV personality. She has several projects in development over multiple platforms including scripted, unscripted, digital and publishing.

Radziwill began her career at ABC News as a journalist working for Peter Jennings’ documentary unit, covering foreign policy stories in Haiti, Cambodia, Israel and Afghanistan. She produced stories for the magazine shows 20/20, Primetime Live and DayOne ranging from medical to murder stories, and celebrity profiles including the story of a Vietnam veteran’s anti-landmine campaign in Cambodia, which earned Radziwill the first of three Emmy Awards.

Joe Alwyn has quickly become an actor on the rise — and not because he’s dating pop superstar Taylor Swift.

It was announced on Tuesday that Alwyn, 26, landed his next big film role, opposite Margot Robbie and Saoirse Ronan, in Mary Queen of Scots, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
