How Not To Make A Movie

Rex Lease has just gotten his captain's papers and is made skipper of an old but sound ship. What he doesn't know is that the owner's son, Robert Frazier, is smuggling guns down to Caribbean revolutionaries, and has hired a crew of thieves to mutiny if Lease gets troublesome. Also, Allene Ray, Lease's fiancee, has snuck onboard. Lease is walking in the hold when a crate falls over and open, revealing guns, the crew mutinies, there's a big storm, and....

I won't bother going any further. It's an awful movie. Part of that can be explained by the fact that parts of it were shot in 1930, other parts in 1939, and then it sat on the shelf for eight years, until it was sold to television. It's possible that, had it been shot in 1930 or 1939, it might have been an adequate Poverty Row feature of the era. As it is, it fails in every department: writing, acting, directing, even foley work, which sound like they were pulled from one of the innumerable comedy shorts that Jules White produced for Columbia. Jack Irwin is credited as writer, director, and producer, probably because no one else wanted the blame.

    • Trivia
The film has never had a theatrical release. Production began in 1930 under the title "Contraband", stopped when the producers ran out of money, then began again under the title "Contraband Cargo". Production soon stopped again and was not resumed until 1939, when new footage was shot and footage from Sous le ciel des tropiques (1930) was edited in. The film was still deemed not suitable for theatrical distribution, and it wasn't until 1949 that it was finally released--to television.
