The uncensored Japanese version of what would be "Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs"

"Star Musketeer Bismarck" is a Science Fiction/Anime-series which aired in Japan from 1984 to 1985, with 51 episodes. It was produced by Studio Pierrot. Unfortunately this series became a flop. And even today this series id still a very rare treasure, and you will need luck to eventually find this version.

The series is set in a distant future where the Earth has become explored by humanity, and the inner and outer planets of the Solar System has became colonized. Earth Federation Government (EFG) is created to protect the humanity and maintain the Solar System's law and order.

A group of non-human creatures called Deathcula invade the Solar System, and it's up to four specialists to control a giant robot called Bismarck, and defeat the Deathcula creatures. And their names are Shinji Hikari (Japan), Bill Wilcox (USA), Richard Lancelot (UK/Scotland) and Marianne Louvre (France).

This anime-series has great animation, and story plot. Many great battle sequences also take place over the course of the entire series. The series opening theme "Call me" by MIO and the background music are very cool as well. Sometimes a bit violent as innocent people are getting killed in some episodes, no doubt that this series got edited down in the US version which I'm gonna tell you about below here:

As I said earlier, this series became a flop after the original broadcast on Nippon Television. When the United States received this series, episodes have been edited down, rewritten and reorganized and totally rewritten in order to become more child-friendly. And the result became "Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs", as we people mostly know it. And it's all done by World Events Productions, also responsible for "Voltron: Defender of the Universe" and their own "Denver: The Last Dinosaur".

Once again you will need a good luck to eventually find this series, eventually on Japanese DVD.

Other notable anime series produced by Studio Pierrot include: "Mahou Tenshi Creamy Mami", "Flame of Recca", "Bleach" and "Naruto".

    • Trivia
After the distribution rights for the English version were purchased by World Events Productions, in order to make it appeal to the American and European market, the company decided to retool the mature sci-fi anime to a much lighter western-style sci-fi series in the vein of BraveStarr (1987), which would result in Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs (1987). While the anime was moderately successful in Japan, "Saber Rider" on the other hand was very well received in the Western market and became the better known version.
