Marty Callner, the 12-time Emmy nominee who created HBO’s Hard Knocks and directed and/or produced music videos and TV specials featuring the likes of Cher, Garth Brooks, Robin Williams, Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock, has died. He was 78.
Callner died Monday at his home in Malibu, his rep Gail Parenteau announced. His son Jazz said it was from natural causes.
The first music videos he directed were ones in 1984 for Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and Pat Benatar’s “We Belong,” and he also handled Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time”; Aerosmith’s “Cryin’,” “Crazy,” “Amazing,” “Livin’ on the Edge,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Dude Looks Like a Lady” and “Love in an Elevator”; Whitesnake’s “Here I Go Again,” Poison’s “Every Rose Has a Thorn,” Stevie Nicks’ “Stand Back” and Bon Jovi’s “Lie to Me,” more than 200 in all, most for MTV.

A magnum opus? Mark Anthony Green's filmmaking debut is not. His Opus inspects celebrity cult status through pop superstardom with the same unease as a Midsommar or The Sacrament, except oddly restrained. High points are undeniable: John Malkovich as a Liberace x Mercury idol, very A24-coded styles, and Ayo Edebiri being Ayo. It's undeniably accomplished on technical fronts for a coming-out feature, but problems with the third act's payoff diminish Opus' devilish appeal.
Storytelling revolves around Malkovich's scene-stealing Alfred Moretti — a bedazzled, flamboyant musical legend who announces his first album in decades. Industry media players are invited to his secluded desert compound for a private listening party: music journalist Stan Sullivan (Murray Bartlett), paparazzi extraordinaire Bianca Tyson (Melissa Chambers), mega influencer Emily Katz (Stephanie Suganami), podcaster Bill Lotto (Mark Sivertsen), and television personality Carla Armstrong (Juliette Lewis). In 2024, the first Planet of the Apes movie in more than a half-decade was released as the start of a new era of the franchise at Disney. What is shaping up to be a new trilogy centered around a new story officially reignited the fan base with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Even though fans love to cling to the brilliance of the 2010s "Caesar Trilogy," which effectively explored the origins of a planet ruled by apes instead of humans, the most recent film presents an even more exciting direction for the franchise going forward.
With what feels like an inventive bridge between the past and future, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes looks to portray the world in a different era that gets a lot closer to the 1968 original than any contemporary entry. It certainly makes the upcoming sequels that much more tantalizing. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes...

2023 was a rough year for The Walt Disney Company, and things are only starting to bounce back in 2024. That said, that doesn't mean Disney didn't have some major wins this year. Being the first studio to take over $2 billion at the domestic box office will certainly do wonders for anyone.
While Disney didn't have its usual bang-out year, it's not leaving the box office empty-handed. Additionally, Disney defied many (including this writer's) expectations by both branching out into new territories and returning to what truly worked in its favor. Although the studio has its Mickey Mitts in a lot of pies like Fox and Lucasfilm, these five films were the biggest wins of 2024.
Alien: Romulus (2024)
Taking home $350,865,342 worldwide, Fede Álvarez took fans of Ridley Scott's sci-fi horror franchise back to basics as Alien: Romulus reignites that claustrophobic terror as a group of spacers encounters extraterrestrial terrors in a derelict space station.

Director Wes Ball’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” takes place 300 years after the death of Caesar (Andy Serkis) and the previous “Planet of Apes” trilogy, when humanity lost the wars and Apes ruled the world for generations. With the fourth installment, Ball wanted to push visual effects supervisor Erik Winquist and the Wētā FX performance capture team well past their prior achievements.
The Caesar trilogy featured a mix of human and ape characters, with many apes using sign language to communicate. In “Kingdom,” humans take a back seat with 12 new ape leads that walk-and-talk like Aaron Sorkin characters. Ball also envisioned it as a road film with Noa (Owen Teague) crossing an ever-changing landscape to find his abducted clan.
Dating back to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011), the franchise always pushed performance capture beyond the soundstage but production still centered around carefully prepped principal exterior sets.

One Piece, Bleach, Naruto, and Dragon Ball have some of the biggest fandoms, who also love to bicker with each other. “Who is the strongest?” is the favorite question to ask for some of you guys.

One of the most underappreciated aspects of filmmaking is the casting process. Its not as simple as slapping a big-name actor into a random story. An ensemble cast can absolutely make or break a film. Its incredibly important for filmmakers to pick the right people for the job.
In 2026, the Academy Awards will finally recognize this vital part of Hollywood with its own award category. Taking a look back, many films of the past decade deserve to be recognized for their incredible achievements in casting.

A classic historian has nothing but praise for HBO's Rome. Having run from 2005 to 2007 before its season 2 cancelation, the show featured a live-action depiction of Julius Caesar's rise to power in the dying days of the Roman Republic. Alongside Ciarn Hinds's Caesar were the two leads, Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson), who played two soldiers in Caesar's chief legion. After the similar historical show, Those About To Die, was released in 2024, memories of HBO's hit have earned additional recognition.

Apes have been strong together since 1968, with the Planet of the Apes series being one of the most popular and longest-running science fiction franchises on the big screen. The newest entry to hit the cinema is Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which follows the continuity of the rebooted trilogy from the 2010s. Those films were very successful and widely regarded by many, but one film in particular stood out among the rest.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was the best in the newer series, and it might be perhaps the crown jewel of the franchise as a whole. Upping the ante in both scale and quality next to its predecessor, it encapsulated the themes of the brand and paved the way for a dark war to come. It was also something of a subversive movie in a way that few other blockbusters can get away with,...

Instead, the project led to the Simian Flu outbreak, with humanity being rendered primitive, and apes taking over the world due to their heightened intelligence.

I love me some damn dirty apes, and I’m not alone. Ever since the first Planet of the Apes movie in 1968, it’s been one of Hollywood’s most consistent (on a quality level) franchises. Think about it. Has there ever really been a lousy Planet of the Apes movie? Not really. Yet, it’s often unheralded when we talk about the great franchises. So, let’s look at the series as a whole, with this Planet of the Apes movies ranked list (from worst to best). And don’t worry – you’ll get to have your say tomorrow with a poll I’ll be publishing, so check back for that.

The 2011-2017 Planet of the Apes trilogy serves as both a reboot and prequel, exploring the rise of intelligent apes and humanity's downfall. In the new films, Caesar's origins differ, with a focus on a science experiment leading to his intelligence. War for the Planet of the Apes concludes Caesar's story, showing him sacrificing everything for his people, and fulfilling his dream.
The latter-day Planet of the Apes movies walked an extraordinary tightrope between being a straight-up reboot of the original film series from the '60s and '70s and what amounts to a prequel to the seminal 1968 original. The trilogy 2011s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 2014s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and 2017s War for the Planet of the Apes depict humanitys destruction at the hands of a pandemic and the subsequent ascent of intelligent apes to become the Earths dominant species. Scarlett Johansson maintained a fresh Rotten Tomatoes streak, despite a few misses, until 2017. Ghost in the Shell and Rough Night marred Johansson's Rotten Tomatoes trend. After 2017, Johansson's movies have continued to be fresh once more.
For years, Scarlett Johansson has maintained a spectacular Rotten Tomatoes streak that continues to this day, with the exception of two movies from 2017. Johansson's impressive career began in 1994, when she made her feature film debut in the movie, North. In 2003, she took on her first adult role in Lost in Translation. Since then, her participation in other indie movies and her role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have afforded her worldwide fame. These days, Scarlett Johansson's movies are some of the highest-grossing and most popular films to date.
Scarlett Johansson's early Rotten Tomatoes scores are particularly hit-or-miss. It seems as though she could have a fantastic movie one year, then a completely awful one the next.

The Dead Don’t Hurt (Viggo Mortensen)
Though The Dead Don’t Hurt gradually becomes Vivienne’s story as Holger disappears to fight, his presence still defines the film in strange ways. While Mortensen certainly looks younger than 65 and I’m not one of those people who busts out a calculator to determine what is or isn’t an appropriate age-gap relationship, Mortensen casting himself opposite Krieps in the romantic (even action hero) lead role he’s clearly too old for (beyond maybe financing requirements) reeks of ego. Maybe this wouldn’t matter as much if he dramatized these proceedings in a way more compelling than just its interesting conceptual ideas of immigrants in the west going through the passage of time together.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes raised the bar for the franchise with a complex narrative and character development. The sequels, War and Kingdom, continued to elevate the franchise with intense, gut-wrenching stories. A Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel could be the "Dawn" of a new trilogy, building on themes and characters.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes came out 10 years ago in July 2014, and it has been my favorite Planet of the Apes movie ever since. There have been 10 Planet of the Apes movies since the inception of the franchise in 1968, not to mention all the comic books and other expanded universe materials. While not every Planet of the Apes film is set in the same continuity, the series is widely considered one of the best sci-fi franchises of all time. 2024 marked the beginning of a new chapter in the saga following the prequel trilogy.

When constructing characters for a film, the villain must have the same level of intrigue as the hero. Sometimes, the movie's standout character will be the villain, regardless of how much screen time they receive. This is the case for a few memorable antagonists, specifically in big-budget blockbusters of the past and present. These villains have a fearful presence, yet their development feels rather limited.
Despite getting pushed aside or having too much buildup before they first appear, these antagonists make a grand impression on audiences. Therefore, because they are so interesting, viewers are left patiently waiting for the next scene where they show up again. Darth Maul from Star Wars, Gorr the God Butcher from Thor: Love & Thunder, and Proximus Caesar from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes are just a few great movie villains that could have benefited from having more screen time.

Fresh off his latest BAFTA win for The Sixth Commandment, Timothy Spall’s next project has been revealed.
The Harry Potter star is leading Death Valley with Welsh actress Gwyneth Keyworth (Black Mirror) for the BBC.
Written and created by Paul Doolan (Mammoth) and set in Wales, Death Valley follows the unlikely crime-solving partnership between eccentric national treasure John Chapel (Spall), a retired actor and star of hit fictional detective TV show Caesar, and disarming detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (Keyworth). Thrown together by the murder of John’s neighbor, John and Janie are an odd, yet hilarious duo with opposing instincts, and each week they get to the bottom of gripping murders.
“I’m really looking forward to teaming up with the brilliant Gwyneth Keyworth and the fantastically talented team of creatives and technicians on this new and unique comedy drama,” said Spall.
BBC Studios is producing and distributing, and filming will begin next month.

Viewers won't walk away from Chris Nash's In a Violent Nature with any more knowledge about how killers, like Friday the 13th's Jason or Halloween's Michael Myers, are somehow able to overtake their quarry by simply walking. Instead, they'll learn a thing or two about gas-powered wood splitters and the merits of not stealing from graves. As horror aficionados know all too well, killer thrillers often rely on cosmic happenstance -- strewn sticks, random rocks, locked doors, and other conveniently placed inconveniences that trip up any chances of escape. Despite never accelerating beyond a stroll, ambling adversaries are somehow able to catch up with their victims-to-be. It's expected for the genre through an accumulation of films reinforcing the idea. Pro tip: in the unfortunate event that one should find themselves being given chase by a lumbering, possibly otherworldly threat, go to a football field and maintain distance until somebody calls the authorities.

Wes Ball explains that the use of technology and its development was one of the most exciting things about making Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. The mighty Planet of the Apes franchise ruled again at the box office, with the movie earning a mighty $56.5 million domestically (according to ComScore), which puts it right in line with the previous openings of Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) and War for the Planet of the Apes ($56.2 million). Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes carries on the modern reboot trilogy in a clever way, brilliantly copying a pivotal Caesar moment. Caesar is the main character of the modern Planet of the Apes trilogy, with him being the star of the first three films. Andy Serkis was absolutely incredible as Caesar in the relaunch of the Planet of the Apes franchise. Throughout the three movies, the actor made the audience connect with the highly intelligent chimpanzee. Fans were absolutely heartbroken when Andy Serkis’ Caesar met his end in War for the Planet of the Apes. Needless to say, the actor’s portrayal of the character was a huge reason behind the success of the films.

[Editor’s note: Massive spoilers for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” below.]
Apes rule in “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” kicking off director Wes Ball’s post-Caesar saga 300 years later. Wētā FX leveraged its tech from the previous “Apes” trilogy and the Oscar-winning “Avatar: The Way of Water” for greater photorealism in their performance capture animation and VFX. This is important because the apes are chattier, and there are more CG action set pieces (33 minutes are entirely digital — a franchise first). It adds up to possibly earning the franchise the VFX Oscar that it’s been denied.
After achieving great on-set facial capture in the rain and snow for director Matt Reeves’ “Dawn” and “War” films, Wētā embraced more expansive environments for “Kingdom” along with more active and expressive apes. In the film, simians have begun developing their own civilization in villages spread throughout the overgrown Pacific Northwest, with decrepit skyscrapers in the distance.

This article contains spoilers for "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes."
In 1968's "Planet of the Apes," astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and his companions find themselves traveling from 1972 to the year 3978 during their voyage, initially assuming they've traveled through space as well as time. Famously, Taylor finds this assumption woefully incorrect, discovering that a malfunctioning spacecraft took him right back to his point of origin: an Earth, but 2,006 years in the future, where humanity has all but destroyed itself with nuclear war, and a race of sentient apes have risen to become the world's dominant species.
While that original film has arguably been surpassed in quality by its subsequent sequels and the modern reboot saga, its cultural impact cannot be matched; everything from its visual iconography and immortal twist ending is firmly ingrained within pop culture. That's a big reason why the "Planet of the Apes" films, even...

Fantastic VFX and motion capture performances bring the Apes saga to a whole new level of realism. A fresh take on the franchise both continues its mythology and also sets up the foundations for a gripping study of civilization, violence, and the human condition. Long runtime and slow start aside, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is almost exactly what we want from a summer blockbuster.
Planet of the Apes was one of the first major sci-fi franchises. The original was a groundbreaking film, and it soon launched a five-film series and a television spin-off, and was one of the first merchandised films. It would be 28 years between the release of 1973's Battle for the Planet of the Apes and Tim Burton's disappointing 2001 reimagining. After over three decades on ice and a big-budget remake failing to capture audience attention, it seemed to many like this franchise was a relic of the past.

Director Wes Ball claims "we tried to exist in both places" when it comes to connecting Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with the 1968 classic and Caesar trilogy: "the two pillars." Ball also says of his Kingdom's place in the franchise, We're trying to be somewhere in the middle between those two." The upcoming sci-fi action film almost didn't happen, with Ball initially being reluctant, but the story eventually found its own unique path.

Grossing over $2 billion worldwide since its inception in 1968, the Planet of the Apes franchise has turned out to be one of the most successful ones in Hollywood. Based on French author Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel La Planète des singes, the title has released a total of nine movies, expanding its lore, with a tenth one, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes starring The Witcher actress Freya Allan in a leading role and set some 300 years after the events of the last outing.
A rough outline of all the movies involves humans, intelligent apes, and some sort of conflict. However, the dystopian setting where mankind comes down on its knees to face a brutal twist of fate sets the narrative in different orders for the different iterations. Someone who has just embarked on watching, or one who wishes to refresh their memory of the events of the films, need not watch all nine of them.

With the release of The Fall Guy this weekend, the summer movie season is finally upon us. While it’s a thinner summer than usual due to the dual writer and actors strike bringing movies to a standstill for much of 2023, there should still be a lot of stuff worth checking out, even if the summer seems short of anything that can aspire to Barbenheimer levels of success. Yesterday, we teased some of our most anticipated horror movies, so now we’re tackling the rest of the blockbusters in our 2024 summer movie preview!

Owen Teague portrays Noa's emotional growth through physicality in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, embodying a journey from uncertainty to strength and confidence. Kevin Durand's portrayal of Proximus Caesar showcases intense movement and voice reflecting a mission to prevent human supremacy over apes. Alain Gauthier details the importance of physicality in becoming apes, teaching actors to fully embody their characters for a compelling performance.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” director Wes Ball thinks it’s high time that Wētā FX got its due for its innovative simian performance capture animation. So he intends to peel back the curtain for the first time on the upcoming Blu-ray release. As first reported on the “Ape Nation” podcast, Ball will offer the entire movie, which takes place 300 years after the reign of Andy Serkis’ Caesar, as a bonus feature in a before- and-after comparison of raw dailies and completed performance capture animation and VFX.
“I think VFX is too much maligned…when it’s a tool like anything else,” Ball told IndieWire. “So I think to show the absolute peak of artistry and what these artists actually do is not some button that says, ‘Make Apes.’ These are true storytellers at work here. I want to show that off and celebrate it.”

Director Matt Reeves considered bringing back Koba in War for the Planet of the Apes, hinting at his survival but ultimately decided against it. Koba's story is further explored in the novel "Firestorm," portraying him as a tragic figure shaped by traumatic experiences and driven by revenge. Despite not returning in the final film, Koba's impact is still felt, as his actions in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes set the stage for the conflict.
Koba almost returned in a major role for War Of The Planet Of The Apes, leading many to wonder, "did Kove survive the fall in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes?" Koba, the menacing bonobo with a vendetta against humans, became a standout element of the rebooted Planet of the Apes series, which has brilliantly reimagined the struggle between humans and apes. The Imperium Radio mod elevates Caesar's Legion's presence in Fallout: New Vegas with a propaganda-filled station. A new DJ provides 50+ news stories and 20+ classical songs in Latin and Greek on the station. Fans applaud the detailed effort put into Imperium Radio mod, which further enhances Fallout: New Vegas.
While Caesar's Legion may already have an imposing presence in Fallout: New Vegas, the sinister faction can now become even more influential thanks to a new radio station that constant spouts propaganda. One of the most beloved parts of the Fallout games is the existence of the radio embedded into players' Pip-Boys, providing both updates on what's happening in the Wasteland while also filling the deathly silence with some classical tunes. While the Mojave does have a handful of stations, The Legion didn't take to the air waves in the vanilla game but that has, fortunately, now been corrected.

Jonathan Nolan’s Fallout adaptation is a success for many reasons, the least of all being its unique sense of identity separate from the games despite being true to the source material in every respect. It is this individuality of the Amazon original series that allows some room for creative liberty while Nolan and his writers’ room build a megalomaniacal post-apocalyptic world spread over the vast wasteland of America.

"Planet of the Apes" has consistently been a science-fiction franchise (and one of the best we have), but the movies come in different sci-fi flavors. The original was a time travel story (even if Charlton Heston's lead George Taylor took the long way around via cryogenesis), culminating in the shocking ending right out of "The Twilight Zone" where Taylor discovers the shattered Statue of Liberty and realizes this ape-ruled world was Earth all along.
The third movie, "Escape from the Planet of the Apes," saw the talking apes travel back to the 1970s when humans reigned. Subsequent films filled in the timeline, depicting the uprising that led to the planet of the apes. The new films (the so-called Caesar trilogy) have done the reverse, starting at the beginning and taking the route of contemporary speculative fiction. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is just over a month away, and it looks like Wes Ball’s addition to the franchise is stacking up to be a significant hit. The last three Planet of the Apes movies did a good job reinventing the franchise for the 21st century, with the last two instalments, directed by Matt Reeves, especially acclaimed. While the Caesar trilogy has come to an end, the new film is set to follow the same continuity, only taking place generations later. In many ways, Kingdom seems more in line with the original series, with talking apes, led by Owen Teague’s Noa, at war with a primitive human society.
According to Deadline, the film is tracking for a $54-61 million dollar opening, which would put it on track with the last film, War for the Planet of the Apes, which opened with $56 million. It’ll...

If you choose to upgrade your Science! Fallout precon deck from Magic: The Gathering, you can significantly improve your performance at Commander-focused tables. This is especially true considering there is a plethora of cards you can add to the Jeskai-colored deck. Science! is one of the many different Edh decks brought to fruition from a collab between Wizards of the Coast and developer Bethesda. Like the Dr. Who x Magic: The Gathering sets, this is a product of the Universes Beyond line of crossover collaborations. With the Fallout set, the card game gets even more references to the post-apocalyptic franchise.

Like most areas of the entertainment industry outside of acting, casting and costuming, television writing was generally one big boys club until women began making (incremental) inroads during the 1990s. There were trailblazers like "I Love Lucy" scribe Madelyn Pugh, but that trail was walked far too infrequently for far too many years.
Anyone who possessed a conscience knew this was unacceptable, which is why it's disappointing that a politically progressive (particularly for his era) writer like Rod Serling never made a concerted effort to work at least one female writer into "The Twilight Zone" mix during the series' five seasons (which stretched from 1959 to 1964). To be fair, Serling did adapt the work of women for certain episodes; in fact, a tale that many consider the show's finest half-hour, "Time Enough at Last," was based on a short story by sci-fi/fantasy writer Lynn Venable. After the newest "Planet of the Apes" trilogy wrapped up in 2017 with director Matt Reeves' stunning, Biblical epic "War for the Planet of the Apes," fans were left with two pressing questions. One, why the heck wasn't Andy Serkis ever recognized by the Oscars for his genuinely award-worthy performance as Caesar? Secondly, would the actor ever return for future movies down the line, despite the fact that Caesar meets a heartbreaking but poignant end by the conclusion of the film? There's precedent within this franchise for actors once again taking the lead role in subsequent sequels as a different character, of course -- look no further than Roddy McDowall starring in the original "Planet of the Apes" and "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" as the chimpanzee Cornelius before coming back in "Conquest" and eventually "Battle" to play the role of Cornelius' son and Caesar.
So why not keep the tradition going,...

Andy Serkis, who played Caesar in the first three films, might make a comeback to the Planet of The Apes franchise as a director for a potential fifth film. Serkis has extensive knowledge and experience with the franchise, making him a valuable asset for a new installment. Returning as Caesar would feel forced, so Serkis' best way to rejoin the franchise is as a director, considering his expertise in motion capture technology and his experience in directing films that utilize it.
Recent news triggered speculation about a possible return to the Planet of The Apes franchise from the last installment's greater absence: Andy Serkis. Almost seven years after the previous film, Kingdom of The Planets of The Apes, the fourth film of this rebooted franchise, is scheduled to be released on May 24th, 2024, and there is plenty of excitement ahead of the date, considering that the trailer looks rather promising.
