a somehow lyrical confrontation between the genders

I am indetermined about whether I liked this movie or not. I liked very much the straight and honest way of depicting human feelings. The two main characters showed how isolation can decrease reasoning, and basic desires can take over all acting. The desertion and loneliness of the two was extremely realistic to the point that I, as a viewer, felt abandoned, too. Thus, I couldn't evade feeling the same boredom as the two at some times. I also had problems with the partially incomprehensible overacting of the female character. However, this might be just Brazilian since I have seen it in Telenovelas before. But, the movie has some depth and delivers a couple of messages worth reflecting. I guess, the reception of this film depends very much on one's actual mood. Due to my indecision I give 6/10.

who's afraid of virginia woolf goes to the tropics

no identifiable genre here. the first time i watched in awe, the second i laughed my intestines out. brutal performances (and to the outsiders, yes, Brazilians are known to have overly emotional reactions at times) and the overwhelming harshness of the surroundings make this experience almost unreal.

this is not a story about brazil or mato grosso (location) or anywhere else for that matter. it's an ontology of the human condition performed almost a la george and martha (who's afraid of virginia woolf). definitely not for the average meg ryan fan.

you'll have to struggle hard to find a copy, probably Chinese (dvd-5), and the world will be unveiled to you. for enlightened serious movie/human nature connoisseurs.

for mans' latitude sometimes IS zero.

    Zero Latitude and All Attitude

As the movie opens, we see a very pregnant woman masturbating in mid-day in the semi-darkness of her shack which is situated in the middle of nowhere. And it's all downhill from there. I wish there was *some* latitude here instead of *zero* latitude. As it is, this film (which features just two people) has no latitude and is all attitude. I guess that's the whole point---but why should I really care? There is very little civility between the two characters---not exactly fun for a movie-viewer who has to endure 85 minutes of this incivility. It's true that the pregnant woman's plight--her situation in life---is pathetic and distressing, but it's hard to feel any real sympathy for the ornery character she plays...
