The anonymous perpetrators of EXPERIMENTAL MARRIAGE shot very, very low -cranking out real-time sex scenes, slapping the mess together and calling it a porno movie. Something Weird has unwisely resuscitated the disaster on Vol. 190 of its Dragon Art Theatre series, but in the new era of individual downloading I doubt if it will generate many takers.
Overall format is in the vein of a white-coater, with familiar porn face Marc Brock interviewing a couple of people about new sexual freedoms and morays. A pretty blonde combines a feminist with a free-love point-of-view, and a Germanic accented, mustachioed creep says I'll show you.
This is a cheap excuse for framing the swinging swappers sex footage that takes up 99% of the running time. Carol Connors & Jack Birch, the real-life married team who begat teen star Thora Birch, visit another couple and trade partners, followed clumsily by the other couple visiting them and doing likewise. Late in the picture the two interviewees join the foursome for an orgy.
This is filmed real-time, with hardly any editing and an aloof camera, almost documentary style though the filmmakers display little or no knowledge of the art form -probably not having even read the instructions on how to operate the 16mm equipment.
Making matters worse, this is an official "limp dick" production, in which Birch and his male co-stars simply are incapable of achieving erections. They get blow jobs to qualify it as a hardcore exercise, but the endless sex scenes consist of dry humping (softcore pretending to be XXX), poorly photographed. Late in the film are a few seconds of insert closeups showing penetration, but this is phony all the way.
Cast improvises small talk that is inane and thankfully inaudible most of the time, while a few lines of dialog were written for Brock and his framing footage. He ends the movie reading some nonsense off cue cards to try and give the movie social significance.
Poorly done in every respect, EXPERIMENTAL MARRIAGE is useful merely as a "reference film" -recommended to anyone with the temerity to accuse a real film (e.g., one of the many low budget horror or action pictures usually targeted for abuse) of being "the worst". Junk like this puts things into perspective.
