Wan zhu

Some of the greatest Chinese movies (such as Farewell My Concubine, and To Live, just to name a few) were made in the late 80s and early 90s, the golden era of modern Chinese movies, and Wan Zhu is one of them. Adapted from the same titled novel by the renowned satirist Shuo Wang, this film sacarstically reflects on the clashes between the "new" and "traditional" attitudes towards various aspects of the Chinese social life. The title literally means "rascals" and suggests the protagonists' behaviours were looked down upon by the society. Note this film was made in a special era as the Chinese economy was opening up and the western culture just started to influence Chinese. Sadly, the trend was gradually reversed after the 1989 Tiananmen incident. And consequently Chinese satires have never reached this height ever since.
