    Obligations

Hiroshi Akutagawa's wife died when their son was a baby. Fortunately, Hideko Takamine did her sisterly duty and came to live with him and care for the house and boy. Aukutagawa has remarried, to Mieko Takamine. But her father, Chishu Ryu has been ill, so she has been spending a lot of time at his dental practice, doing his work. But a crisis has occured. Akutagawa is being promoted to a different city, and Hideko's marriage to Minoru Oki is being negotiated. And Mieko's parents are interfering in both prospects.

It's a fine cast, and they do a lot of heavy lifting with their acting. I give especial kudos to Mieko, especially in the final scene. Although director Yoshirô Kawazu doesn't mix comedy and drama with the facility of Ozu, or the rage of Kinoshita, he does a very good job here with a story that shows that not only children can be selfish and emotionally lazy.
