Almost like "Hoppy Goes to the Races"

"Racing Luck" is the final film William Boyd made before he took on the role that would forever change his life, Hopalong Cassidy. In total, he made 66 Cassidy films as well as a very popular TV series. And, considering that Boyd's career was in a rut in the 1930s, his being chosen to play Hoppy was a godsend.

In "Racing Luck", Dan Morgan (Boyd) is a race horse owner. However, a rival owner hates Morgan and drugs Morgan's horse in order to discredit him. It works VERY well...and Morgan is then banned from racing entirely. The rest of the movie is about Dan's attempt to prove his innocence as well as take a broken down racing horse to victory.

This film sure seemed like a Hopalong Cassidy film apart from its location and time period. This is because it has so many of the typical Hoppy touches...with Morgan befriending a kid as well as his being a very honest and 'swell' guy. And, like these westerns, it's also pretty predictable. As a result, it's enjoyable but also just a pretty typical B-movie. Worth seeing if you are a Boyd fan, otherwise it's pretty much a time-passer.
