I have been trying to locate this movie for almost 20 years and no one including Warne Publishing or PBS new of it when I inquired. I was beginning to think I had imagined seeing it! I also feel it should be brought out for consumer purchase. As an artist, I found it very inspirational. Beatrix Potters life and work are shown through actors but the film also had actual film footage of Miss Potters later years and the land she owned and left preserved for us all. I highly recommend it for artists interested in children's books, for families to watch together, for people trying to live their dreams, and just plain enjoyment! If anyone knows of WHO we can all send our plea to, please let us know! PC
Is this version the same as the one which was aired on Masterpiece Theatre in 1989? This version says "1982" and only runs 60 minutes. The 1989 version was a miniseries and was not animated. The actors were the same--Holly Aird and Penelope Wilton, but there seems to be a difference. Can anyone explain the discrepancy? I thought I heard that the BBC did put out an earlier version. I have been searching for the miniseries practically since it first aired--nearly twenty years ago. Is that version on DVD or even VHS? It showed more of Beatrix's life than the Zelwegger version. I especially enjoyed them showing her interest in botany and the "Powere that be" not taking her seriously because she was a woman.
This program that as shown on Masterpiece Theater back in 1982 is so much more accurate the the mediocre Miss Potter. They really need to release it on DVD!
In the meantime a fuzzy version is available on YouTube. Better than nothing but very hard to appreciate the amazing artwork.

This is a beautiful and thorough biography of Beatrix Potter. Penelope Wilton deserved an Oscar for her performance. She hit every emotion on the mark. The scenery and the sets are perfect. It complements what ultimately happened in Beatrix's life to engage the audience with so much filming in the Lake District. All who grew up and enjoyed the "little books" will enjoy this truly amazing story of a woman coming into her own. The gifts she bestowed on the world were priceless - from wonderful and beautiful books for children to the acres and acres of land she saved from development. There is a story for everyone in this rendition of Beatrix Potter's life. I agree with the other reviews, that this is by far a more complete biography than the recent "Miss Potter". I enjoyed this latest movie, but knowing how wonderful this production was left this one lacking. I wish this was available on DVD. PLEASE WON'T SOMEONE HELP GET THIS DVD AVAILABLE?
This lovely film, about the life of Beatrix Potter, portrayed England at the time of her life. No frills or fancy bits. It showed how hard it was for her as a youngster, growing up in a strict Victorian household, with only a Nannie as a companion. It was she who helped Beatrix smuggle into the house the animals she subsequently drew. She was also a fine botanical artist but her parents would not all her to follow this career. I originally had this recorded on an old VHS tape, but as this wouldn't work on today's machines I discarded it. I have been looking for another tape or DVD ever since. I would love to know where I could obtain one. The modern version was good, to a point, but not a patch on the original. Penelope Wilton is such an under-rated actress.
