Così fan tutte

Although I love the 1989, 2000, 1992 productions and the Ponnelle film, I have to say yes. I may be biased as I love Cosi Fan Tutte, it is Mozart's most psychologically complex story-wise, it is witty and sparkling with the comedy and has some of Mozart's most beautiful music in Soave Sia Il Vento and Il Core Vi Dono. It is a visually sumptuous affair, with traditional stylised sets and beautiful-looking costumes. The camera work is focused, the sound is generally good and the picture quality further adds to the charm of the production values.

Mozart's music is wonderful and some of his best. Arnold Ostmann conducts with a sure hand, and the orchestra play stylishly under him. While giving the big arias and end-of act ensembles their essential energy, Soave Sia Il Vento, Il Core Vi Dono and the recitatives show some sensitive conducting as well. Staging wise, it is all very natural and witty, impressive considering Drottningholm's tiny stage.

The performances are wonderful. First and foremost, Ann Christine Biel is a radiant and vocally agile Fiordiligi. As her sister Dorabella Maria Högland is just as effective, with her vocal colour contrasting well with Biel's and her stage presence just as natural. Ulla Severin charms as the scheming maid Despina, with a strong Una Donna In Quindici Anni.

Lars Tibell is a handsome and very appealing Ferrando, Un Aura Amarosa makes the heart melt as it should do. Magnus Linden is humorous and crisply enunciated as Guglielmo, with Donna Meie... exciting. As Alfonso, Enzo Florimo is suitably world-weary and cynical.

In conclusion, for me the best Cosi on DVD and my of-now personal favourite of the Drottningholm Mozart performances. 10/10 Bethany Cox
