‘Echo Valley’ Review: Killer Duo Julianne Moore and Syndey Sweeney Test the Limits of a Mother’s Unconditional Love
Image
For anyone craving some classic Julianne Moore energy, director Michael Pearce’s “Echo Valley” feels like a throwback to the fierce copper-coifed star’s early career. Before “Short Cuts” and “Boogie Nights” and a well-deserved Oscar win, Moore played the duly suspicious snoop in “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle.” That early-’90s thriller may have been a potboiler, but Moore stole the show, sinking her teeth into every overripe line of dialogue (e.g. “A woman can feel like a failure if she doesn’t bring in 50 grand a year and still make time for blowjobs and homemade lasagna”).

In the well-cast if frequenlly illogical offering from Apple TV+, Moore slyly elevates what could have been a routine protective-mama drama. As Kate Garretson, a rural Pennsylvania farm owner who’ll stop at nothing to safeguard her heroin-addicted daughter Claire (Sydney Sweeney), Moore is as committed a parent as they...

‘The Friend’ Starring Bill Murray to Topline Second Annual Croatia International Film Festival (Exclusive)
Image
“The Friend,” starring Bill Murray and Naomi Watts will open the second annual Croatia International Film Festival on August 8 in the coastal city of Sibenik.

Based on the bestselling novel by Sigrid Nunez, “The Friend” follows Iris (Naomi Watts), a writer whose life is upended when her friend and literary mentor (Murray) bequeaths her his beloved Great Dane.

Directed by Scott McGhee and David Siegel, “The Friend,” which debuted at last year’s Telluride Film Festival and then screened at Toronto, was released to North America by Bleecker Street in March.

McGhee and Siegel will also attend Ciff, a four-day event, with Murray.

“We’ve been yearning to visit Croatia ever since working with the great Croatian actor Goran Visnjic in our film ‘The Deep End,'” McGhee and Siegel said in a joint statement. “We couldn’t be more excited about now bringing ‘The Friend’ to Ciff.”

Last year,...

Why Is It Called Robot Chicken? The Adult Swim Show's Bizarre Title, Explained
Image
It's something of a miracle that "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" veteran Seth Green and Matthew Seinreich's animated TV series "Robot Chicken" is still going as of 2025. The show debuted in 2005, a time when a certain kind of aggressive "shock" humor was in vogue and a Gen-x-focused pop culture obsession was riding high in the American consciousness. Green and Seinreich often made use of toys and pop characters that came into vogue in the 1980s (who remembers the Peculiar Purple Pieman from "Strawberry Shortcake?"), likely hoping to inspire a spark of recognition in a very specific subset of their late-night audience.

That "Robot Chicken" remains popular proves a new generation has become savvy to its sense of humor (either that or 50-year-old men are relentlessly devoted). Of course, if "Family Guy" can play a similar hand for 23 seasons, why can't "Robot Chicken?" Also, why is it called "Robot Chicken?" It's a sketch comedy show,...

How Do You Direct a 150-Pound Great Dane? Giving Him Naomi Watts as a Scene Partner Helps
Image
You’ve probably seen his cute face and big noggin on billboards, TV, or while scrolling your social media feed — a black-and-white-speckled Great Dane named Bing, with a disarmingly droopy face and a pair of heartbreakingly handsome eyes of different colors, accompanying Naomi Watts in the streets of New York City. Obviously a very good boy, Bing is the canine star of David Siegel and Scott McGehee’s big-hearted urban drama “The Friend,” a tender tearjerker on grief, love, and friendship (between both two and four-legged beings), and one of the most classically New York movies in recent memory.

It makes all the sense in the world that a movie called “The Friend” would be the work of two lifelong friends and creative partners like Siegel and McGehee, co-writers and co-directors of intimate human dramas like “The Deep End” and “Montana Story,” who poured their organic synergy and shared life...

Tilda Swinton movies: 20 greatest films ranked worst to best

Tilda Swinton is an Oscar-winning actress who has been a favorite of both the art house crowd and the multiplexes, consistently taking on challenging roles in both indie fare and box office hits. Let’s take a look back at 19 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Born in 1960 in London, England, Swinton got her start working with experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman, making her movie debut in the director’s “Caravaggio” (1986). She also showed her willingness to push herself in offbeat projects with daring auteurs, an edict that would lead to collaborations with Luca Guadanigno, Jim Jarmusch, Bong Joon Ho, Sally Potter, Wes Anderson and the Coen Brothers.

She took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Michael Clayton” (2007), for which she also won the BAFTA and reaped Golden Globe,...

Rescue Hi Surf November 25 & December 2 Episode 10 Delayed. Not Airing For A While
Image
Hey, "Rescue: Hi-Surf" fans. Unfortunately, we have some super bad news to drop on you in this article. It turns out that the most recent episode 9, which aired last Monday night, November 18, 2024, was the Fall finale episode. That means the show is going on a pretty long break. So, Fox is not airing the next, new episode 10 of this current, premiere season 1 tonight, November 25, 2024 and many more weeks after that. According to one of our sources, we have unofficial confirmation that Fox is scheduled to finally air the new episode 10 on Monday night, January 20, 2025 in its usual, 8 pm central standard time slot. So, certainly be sure to memorize that very important date and time if you can. In the meantime, we can tell you what Fox is airing instead of a new Rescue: Hi-Surf episode tonight and next Monday night. According to the TV Guide listings, Fox is serving up...

Susanna Hoffs Announces New Archival Album The Lost Record, Shares Original Version of “Under a Cloud”: Stream
Image
The Bangles co-founder Susanna Hoffs has announced she is releasing a new archival album titled The Lost Record on October 18th via Baroque Folk Records. In anticipation, she has shared the original version of “Under a Cloud,” which was later released by The Bangles in 2011.

The material on The Lost Record was originally recorded in 1999 in Hoffs’ garage, where she was joined by Bill Bottrell, Brian MacLeod, and the Go-Go’s members Charlotte Caffey and Jane Wiedlin.

In a statement, Hoff said that time was a “sweet, special period of being home with a new baby, but also an exploration of identity, separate from the Bangles.” She added that the album was like a diary “reflecting on the things that mattered most in life: love and connection.”

On that note, Hoffs’ version of “Under a Cloud” solely features her vocals and is more jangly and string-laden than the version that...

‘The Friend’ Review: Naomi Watts, Bill Murray And A Great Great Dane Make A Heartwarming And Human Story Irresistible – Telluride Film Festival
Image
“What happens to the dog?”

That is a line that pops up throughout the new dramedy The Friend, which asks that question in different ways and plays with our own experiences in watching movies centered on man’s best friend where whether the dog lives — or dies — is front of mind. And indeed (partly) the title star of this movie is a majestic and huge Great Dane named Apollo (Bing), but “The Friend” is also a woman named Iris (Naomi Watts), a New York City professor and writer who was the best friend to Walter (Bill Murray), a celebrated author and womanizer, married three times among other relationships, but devoted to the 5-year-old Apollo and vice versa. That is until the unthinkable happens and Walter unexpectedly dies, a suicide that sends his circle into a tailspin and Apollo into unending grief and lack of understanding of what happened to his master.

‘The Friend’ Review: Naomi Watts Inherits a Handful in a Dog Movie That’s Really About Accepting Mortality
Image
Before his death, French actor Alain Delon had said that he wished for his dog, Loubo, to be put down when he passed. Delon believed the bond between him and his rescued Belgian Malinois was so strong that the dog would miss him dearly when he died and preferred to spare his pet such pain.

How does one explain death to a dog? That question, and several others deeper than we might expect from a “dog movie,” give intellectual heft to “The Friend,” a gentle coping-with-grief drama that provides its audience with a 180-pound emotional support animal in the form of Apollo, a harlequin Great Dane who’s missing his master and headed for the proverbial glue factory unless a bighearted enough human agrees to adopt him. Naomi Watts plays that human in a by-the-numbers crowd-pleaser with a bit more on its mind than your typical canine-centric tearjerker.

It’s...

Serena Williams Praised as “Monster on the Court” By Sister Venus in Teaser for ESPN’s ‘In the Arena’
Image
“The best thing that happened to my career was coming up behind my sister.”

So says Serena Williams at the start of a new trailer for ESPN’s new docuseries, In the Arena: Serena Williams presented by Morgan Stanley. The network dropped a teaser today along with descriptions of the eight episodes that promise “an unprecedented look at the life and career” of the now-retired tennis legend who dominated the game for more than two decades alongside sister Venus Williams. The news comes just a few weeks after the world premiere of the first two episodes at Tribeca Festival in New York.

“My dad, he got my sister out there, and then he started to say I was going to be better. I looked different. I played different. I was more emotional. I had muscle. I was something no one had ever seen before,” Serena continues in the clip. Her sister,...

July on the Criterion Channel Includes Shakespeare, Glauber Rocha, Gregg Araki, Godzilla & More
Image
How now, what news: the Criterion Channel’s July lineup is here. Eight pop renditions of Shakespeare are on the docket: from movies you forgot were inspired by the Bard (Abel Ferrara’s China Girl) to ones you’d wish to forget altogether (Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing), with maybe my single favorite interpretation (Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet) alongside Paul Mazursky, Gus Van Sant, Baz Luhrmann, Derek Jarman, and (of course) Kenneth Branagh. A neonoir collection arrives four months ahead of Noirvember: two Ellroy adaptations, two from De Palma that are not his neonoir Ellroy adaptation, two from the Coen brothers (i.e. the chance to see a DVD-stranded The Man Who Wasn’t There in HD), and––finally––a Michael Winner picture given Criterion’s seal of approval.

Columbia screwballs run between classics to lesser-seens while Nicolas Roeg and Heisei-era Godzilla face off. A Times Square collection brings The Gods of Times Square,...

‘Montana Story’ Is the Anti-‘Yellowstone.’ That’s a Good Thing
Image
Say “Montana” to anyone currently consuming a well-balanced media diet, and they’re likely to immediately think of Yellowstone, the unbelievably popular Dynasty-for-cowboys TV show that takes place in the “Treasure State.” Taylor Sheridan’s modern-day Western doesn’t have a lock on contemporary narratives in the region, to be sure, but it does cast a slightly odd shadow over the similarly looming landscapes of Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s Montana Story. They even have a handful of coincidentally similar aspects in common: Both have ill fathers at their centers,...

‘Nana’: Ben Lawson To Star In ABC Comedy Pilot In Recasting
Exclusive: ABC’s multi-camera/hybrid comedy pilot Nana, headlined and co-executive produced by Katey Sagal, is making a major casting change. Ben Lawson (Designated Survivor) has been tapped as the male lead opposite Sagal. He replaces Josh Cooke, who had been originally cast in the role.

The decision was made after the pilot’s table read late last week, which triggered a substantial reworking of the script. While Sagal as the title character was very well received, a number of other elements underwent changes, including the male lead character Alex getting reconceived. That led to the recasting.

Recastings are not uncommon in the pressure cooker of broadcast pilot season when some 70-80 pilots are being made at the same time on tight deadlines. The table read is the first time the key elements of a pilot — script and cast — come together and the producers can see if everything clicks. Nana...
