Don't take it too seriously, man!

Interesting, but flawed film about the (mis)adventures of a country bumpkin in the big, bad, mad world of Bombay. he is befriended by a few odd characters, also trying to make their fortunes in the city (in their own way). also he is smitten by a beautiful, charming woman who is a budding tv/film scriptwriter. how he gets deeper and deeper into trouble, and how his (idealistic) dreams are shattered, are nothing new for film buffs. but the film has some nice moments sprinkled throughout, and the tone is almost always realistic. also the acting is good, though Manoj Bajpai unnecessarily hams it up at some places. still, this is preferable to the average Indian potboiler. one hot dance number adds spice to the proceedings. by the way the title means "don't take it to heart, buddy", so i guess u don't have to take the film too seriously.

Another in the "Could have been better" category.

While the film eventually picked up speed, the characters were all a little annoying for the first hour of the film. I will have to admit, though, that Manoj Bajpal was excellent in his role and was convincing in every change in his character. The film was hurt by overacting on most of the characters part except for Tabu, who is always excellent. Some of the fight scenes were just too fakey and a little extra work could have paid huge dividends. I would have loved to have seen the nightclub scene without the fight sequences. It is the best song/dance in the movie.

If you purchase the DVD, be forewarned that the cover and back art gives a completely inaccurate picture of the film which, instead of beeing cheerful and upbeat, is very dark and, at times, depressing. At least the synopsis did not give everything away like so many of the ones on the DVDs.

Don't take this movie too seriously, for heaven's sake...

Like all Bollywood movies, this movie requires a little bit of suspension of disbelief.

"Dil Pe Mat Le, Yaar!" means "Don't Take It To Heart, For Heaven's Sake". "Yaar" is an exclamation used in Hindi similar to our "eh" or our saying "Geez" or worse.

The main characters' acting is superb, but the fact that this movie is still a musical and was produced in traditional formulaic Bollywood style is what hurts it.

The fact that people break out in song and that the premise of the movie is so banal ruin an otherwise excellent production.

Yes, some of the supporting cast is not up to the caliber of the main actors. Yes, it's a jumble of genres - musical, black comedy and dramatic tear jerker, but to have a project sold in Bollywood, one must follow certain formulae to please the masses.

The message of the movie is good, if rather inconsequential, but it's not a travesty or waste of money.

Take a look at the movie, and you'll be able to pick out the good from the bad. And for heaven's sake, don't take it too seriously.

Well made movie, but with flaws

This was Hansal Mehta's directorial debut and the effort was quite visible. Movie was made with heart but has its flaws.

The story is about Ram Saran Pandey who comes to Bombay in search of work and better life. He starts working in a garage. Ram Saran meets with Kamya Lal, who is a journalist and she is impressed with Ram Saran. Ram Saran is attracted toward her and thinks that she also likes him. But that is not the case, and the outcome of this confusion changes the life of Ram Saran.

Then there is many misadventure of Ram Saran's friend Gaitounde(Saurabh Shukla), Tito(Aditya Srivastav) and others. Saurabh Shukla who has written the story is quite good but this is not among his best performance. Aditya Srivastav does overact many times but is okay in the movie.

The biggest strong point of the movie is Manoj Bajpayee as Ram Saran, who is extremely convincing. He has many thoughts and personality changes going on throughout the movie and is able to portray that quite convincingly on screen. He is simply brilliant in every frame.

Tabu as Kamya Lal has done a brilliant job. She is a brilliant actress and delivers here.

There are some light moments in the film which is likeable. The music though is pretty average. The work of actors other than Manoj Bajpayee and Tabu has surely let down the script, but even then the movie was enjoyable.

Watch this movie only for Manoj Bajpayee and a pretty decent story.

    • Trivia
Manoj Bajpai had agreed to do the film in his pre Satya days. After Satya released, Hansal Mehta could not find a producer for the film. Hansal Mehta finally found a producer, but he had a very very small budget and would only produce the film if Manoj Bajpai was the lead actor. But now Manoj found the film too small and not fitting his new star status. He refused the film. In desperation Hansal approached Aditya Srivastav for the lead role. He accepted it. But now the producer backed out. They only wanted Manoj. Now after a few months of struggling , producer Ajay Tuli came into the picture. He was able to bring the budget up. This lead to Manoj Bajpai coming back into the film and Aditya Srivastav taking the role of Dubai return "Tito".
