    Confused

Disappointment after watching the movie patiently. The plot is good in the first half and exposes the so called great artists. Their ambitions, shortcomings, frustration and biting politics is realistic. But in the second half, the film drags on, drifting towards leftist thinking. The discussion goes on without any conclusion. If these snobs really feel for a poor man, they should handle it on a different level.

    Movie about the elite

This movie is aimed at the elite artist class and how they escape their responsibility towards the society, even though they have the perfect mouthpiece in the form of their art.

The movie starts as a party gathering of rich people of the society, consisting of artists, their patrons, critics, and socialites. It is a celebration in the honor of a recipient of a literary award.

As the movie progresses, it unfolds the personal lives and the tension among the pretentious guests. There are mixed feelings of jealousy, pompousness and love for popularity.

Amrit, another literary person, is not present in the party. We form his character from the comments of the guests. While most of the guests look down upon him, he is the only one to stand up for his responsibility of writing about and participating in the problems of the society, in this case, the problems of the remote tribals.

He comes on the screen only at the end of the movie.

Overall, an amazingly beautiful film, breaking the regular-movie mold. movies.

    beg your pardon, Sam

but isn't this movie about people! people in general. in fact the story could apply to any people, any country. Behind the guise of adivasi exploitation (which of course is India specific and I don't deny its existence or absence) it actually questions morality, general apathy towards social issues and the role of an artist in participating in the solution rather than just commenting on it or evoking others' emotions on it (recall the long conversation that ends the movie before the news about Amrit is broken) this could have been written for any country, any society as for your other examples of 'good' movies, no comments :)

    Cheers, Prakash.

Stylistically orchestrated, socially conscious film making of the highest standard

Gobind Nihalani established himself as a distinguished filmmaker early in his career with films like 'Akrosh' and 'Ardh Satya.' But speaking personally, I find his third film PARTY to be more stylistically orchestrated, brimming with social commentaryand successful in exposing the dubiousness of the rich and the famous from the Cultural fraternity. Under the guise of celebrating a recent honor bestowed on one Dr. Barve (Manohar Singh) a party is thrown by one of the female friends (Vijaya Mehta) of the feted writer. Several people arrive in this party and gradually their personal lives get unfolded before the viewer. Wannabe writers, actors from the theatre, social climbers and social activists & gate crashers mingle freely in the midst of free-flowing snacks and drinks. The discussions ranges from whether Political commitment contribute towards a writer's greatness or the atrocities committed by the State on tribals in the name of development, and the fate that befalls those who speak as voice for the marginalized. In this respect one does find similarity of Gobind Nihalani with filmmakers like Mrinal Sen and Gautam Ghose who seek to address such topical issues in their works. Fine ensemble acting by Amrish Puri, Om Puri, Shafi Inamdar, K. K. Raina, Rohini Hattangady, Deepa Sahi, Pearl Padamsee, Mohan Bhandari, Soni Radzan & Jayant Kripalani add to the strength of the film. Rating: 4.3 out of 5

Very Excellent. One of Govind Nihalani's Best.

His Divine Grace Great Director, Photographer Mr. Govind Nihalani's best.

His Divine Grace Govind Nihalani knows how to move Camera better than anybody else in Indian Film Industry.

But still I like to request His Divine Grace to make one movie on Positive Feeling about Indian Society...

A movie like Tarachand Barjatiya's Hum Apke Hai Kaun... or Yash Chopara's One of the finest ... Shahrukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit, Karishma Kapoor, and Akshay Khanna.

    Thanks and Regards.
