      Sukrutham-"Blessed"

This is a melodramatic film of a journalistRavishankar(Mammooty) who succumbs to blood cancer. He loses all hope and is driven by disappointment. That is when he is visited by a doctor, played exceptional well by Prof.Narendra Prasad, who inculcates him into Vedic treatment.Ravi is on the way to recovery and finds a new zest for life when he learns that his recovery is blow to all his relatives including his wife.He is again feels resentment when he learns that his death was more awaited than his recovery. The film mainly conveys that death is an inevitable part of life and is in its own way a moment to rejoice.Good script and good performances especially by Narendra Prasad and Mammooty.

Death is the final truth - everything else changes

This is a Malayalam language film starring Mammootty. I consider this one of his best films.

Written by MT Vasudevan Nair, the film's story has many lessons to tell. About life, human character and personality, and love itself.

The film is about a terminally ill person who has given up hope and walks away from society to try one last attempt with a holistic treatment. When he recovers and returns though he realises how the nature of the world and of life is that of Change.

The film deserved a better ending which could have been easily scripted and kept it more memorable. But for all his genius, MT seems to cherish cynical endings as this one. And perhaps it was a remnant of the 80s and early 90s where at times Malayalam films equated melancholia with high art.

But for the lack of positivity in the message being given a befitting ending, nothing to take away from the performances, music and direction. A must watch!

      A Study of Death

There have been movies which have focused on death as their central theme, but it is always the person dying around whom the film focuses ... never have I come across a film in which all the characters - ESPECIALLY the person dying - are merely peripheral players, and Death, itself, is the lead player ... such a unique example is 'Sukrutham' - a study of death, if there ever was one.

Mammootty delivers, here, a career-defining performance as cancer victim Ravishankar - and yet the victory of the film lies in the fact that it is not ABOUT Ravishankar per se, but about the persons around Ravishankar, and how they are affected by what happens to Ravishankar. To that extent, Ravishankar remains basically a pivot around whom the film revolves, while the film itself is a masterful character study of everyone EXCEPT Ravishankar himself.

Gowthami, as Ravishankar's confused wife, also acquits herself commendably, and, even at the end of it all, one remains ambivalent about her character which, like Ravishankar himself, remains consigned to fate. Scripted, almost obviously, by M T Vasudevan Nair, 'Sukrutham' is not easy, or even comfortable, viewing, but it is a memorable cinematic experience, and is a harkback to the introspected, searching performer that Mammootty was then ... at par, in every way, with his 'Thaniyavarthanam'.

Cinema can't get more serious than this.
