    An Eastern Westerner

Lester Cuneo is a New York writer. Tired of his life, he rents a cottage by the sea in California and gets involved in local intrigue surrounding Bert Sprotte, his mustache, his stolen ranch and Lilian Ward, as well as the usual assortment of Old California tropes.

Cuneo started out in movies in comedies and after service during the First World War moved into action features -- a lot like early Doug Fairbanks but without the light touch. His career had begun to decline when this picture was made, despite some obvious money spent. The long-winded art titles of Ferdinand Earle are a trifle onerous. Still, Cuneo sits a horse well and the seaside shots are quite lovely. Although this silent western clearly has intentions well above the B grade, a decent B western is what the viewer gets.
