Post Concussion

This is a really wonderful comedy. It is light, insightful, funny, sorrowful, pleasing, and amusing, all at the same time. I saw it at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood and got to meet the director and much of the cast. He is a modest man with great skills as a movie maker.

The only problem with the movie is that it was made with virtually no money, and it shows. But this fact also shows that skill and ability will always beat out money in terms of the end product.

The movie itself is about a business consultant who suffers a brain injury as the result of an auto accident, and the effect this has upon his life. The movie covers his recovery, loss of job, and his experimentation with alternative medicines.

The protagonist is a Korean, the child of immigrants. During his illness he watches TV and gets to view various interesting shows, including "Plan Nine From Outer Space" which never looked better. Because of money issues several of the actors played numerous rolls. One of the TV shows he watches has himself in a show on the wildlife of the Scottish Highland. The hero himself plays a certain McWong who claims to be Scottish. The scene is a classic.

Another classic scene involves the protagonist visiting the insurance company handling his disability and getting a first hand sample of what the actions of his firm have done to its client companies.

If you get a chance to see this movie take it.

After viewing the first 25 minutes of this nerdy little movie I was thinking of shutting it down, thinking I had better things to do with my time. But, I kept watching and wow it was something. Its really a neat story plot. If you don't mind the low budget production and view with an open mind, I think you might get a kick out of this movie, like I did. I found out that a lot of what happens in the movie actually did happen to the writer/director Daniel Yoon. Yoon stars as part of a corporate team that goes to other companies helping them to trim their manpower. A life changing event happens to this man and thats when this movie takes off. Most of the other first time actors are interesting and rather convincing in their roles helping to pull this off. It's not a Hollywood blockbuster type movie that's for sure, but to me thats what makes this good. Recommended.

I saw this film last year at a local film festival and really enjoyed it. It was funny but none of the humor was mean spirited and it was touching without being overtly sentimental. I particularly enjoyed it's commentary on the transience and fragility of life.

Daniel Yoon did a brilliant job of infusing humor, wit, creativity and life-giving joy to a situation that -- you'd think -- isn't all that cheery. I can see why it won an award. Anyone would enjoy it a lot, but the movie's also a cool choice for anyone who's ever had TBI, or knows or loves someone who has. I got my third concussion about a year and a half ago, and was worried the movie would upset me or be inaccurate. But not only was it accurate, complicated issues were presented in a sweet, clear, and amazingly funny way (e.g. there's a model of the brain made with jello.) I can't believe I laughed so hard, brain injuries suck... but the movie's fantastic.

I saw this film in Waterville, Maine in the Summer of 2000. It was very funny in a gentle, self effacing way. All of the players were fun to watch and I enjoyed their multiple roles. More than anything I've seen, this film does a good job of demonstrating the fragility of life and it does it with a light touch.
