Syvilla: They Dance to Her Drum

A.charming documentary about Syvilla Fort, an influential black dancer who worked in modernist, experimental and cross-cultural forms of choreography. I am no expert on her, all this is covered in the film. It also offers a fly-on-the-wall view of her teaching in her dance studio.

I found myself really taken with the joy of the movie and just watching the fun of a room full of people from the mid 70s surrounded by house plants doing ballet exercises; it's great footage. There is also a very nice little piece of flute music that plays over much of the film. Moving little short, it's worth checking out just to see these moments.

Oh, there is footage of her performing with John Cage and his wacky piano so that's also cool.
