Not the best Miller show but still worthwhile

Granted I've only seen it once, I was a little dissapointed with this show for laughs. It is an interesting concept with plenty of funny moments, as you would expect from Dennis. Unfortunately for me I didn't laugh as much as I normally do in a Dennis Miller Live show. This pales in the comparison of his more recent Raw Feed, which makes me bust my gut every 20-30 seconds. Any fan of the Dennis Miller show should seek out the Millenium Special and the Raw Feed, but the latter is definitely better. The Norm McDonald "cock" references which occur over and over is an inside joke to those that saw him on a prior show. Problem is, if you're not in that small, probably minority audience who is familiar with the joke, it would just seem stupid... Since I got the reference I thought it was amusing, but it may have made Norm look bad to some (not that Norm probably cares). Anyway, its worth a look, but I'd look for it on TV or a rental store first before buying it outright. Trust me though, go ahead and buy Raw Feed if you don't have the opportunity to see it on the air.

Dennis is good in this one... too bad he's the only one

First off, I want to point out that this is a great special. It has some interesting, original takes on events that happened during the past millennium. Dennis's performance, including the delivery of his jokes and the incredible writing of them, is at least a 9.5, if not a 10. The only thing I'd recommend (if you have a tape of this special) is to fast-forward through the Norm MacDonald sequences. Dennis makes up for it, but Norm suddenly gets extremely annoying by the second or third time he's gone out of his way to make male genitalia jokes within a one-minute time-span. But Dennis is truly funny enough that he helps you recover from Norm's feeble attempts at humor. I give it an overall 8 out of 10.

    Awesome!!

This special was supposed to be a lead-in to the new millennium, who better to bring HBO into the year 2000 than Dennis Miller, one of HBO's most popular stars of the time (and likely still is).

This wasn't a conventional stand-up routine, as I was expecting. Rather, it was an hour-long "Dennis Miller Live"...set over 1000 years. Viewers get to watch Miller perform his show in different years, ranting on topics of the period, like, for example, the Bubonic Plague. Miller's guest each time is Norm MacDonald, also clad in period clothes. Miller starts the show in the present (1999), and the show goes from there. He does his current events, his rant, and his guest. I don't remember if he did the Big Screen (or some variation of it).

This was a really funny show, and Dennis Miller does a great job. His sarcastic wit and giggle were what made me laugh. He was the bright spot of the show (for more obvious reasons). The use of Norm MacDonald wasn't necessary--Dana Carvey would have been of much better use. MacDonald is funny, but one tends to get tired of him after awhile. You can only go so far saying "uhhh" a lot. I know not everyone would agree, but they could have done without him.

I really liked this special, as it was funny and insightful. I highly recommend seeing it if you can find it. I trashed my tape of this, unknowingly, and I'm still crushed. Eventually this one will have to be released on DVD.

Of course, that's just my opinion, and I could be wrong.

How bad was it? How much time do you have to waste?

I have been a huge fan of Dennis Miller for years and have missed him since he went over to cable (I don't get it). So, I was excited to get this tape. Boy, was that badddddd! I think my wife and I laughed only once the whole hour. Seems like the writing was done by a second rate high school. I really miss his sarcastic intelligent humour. I guess he's just "phoning it in" these days. I won't even talk about old Norm; he gave up on using his brain a long time ago and this is just one more instance of that.

Dennis Miller At His Ironic Best!

I recall an episode of the Simpsons where Lisa sees the comic book guy wearing a shirt that reads: "C:\Dos C:\Dos\Run Run\Dos\Run" To this Lisa replies "Only one person in a million would find that funny" And the comic book guy responds "Yes, we call that the Dennis Miller Ratio"

If you are that one-in-a-million who appreciate Miller's cynical, ironic, sarcastic, vulgar take on things; if you have a taste for the obscure, the irreverent, and the frequent repetition of the F and C words, then this is for you.

I enjoy Miller's humor but if you don't like it, DO NOT WATCH THIS SPECIAL. People either love or hate Dennis Miller, so if you're a fan of his, you need to see this; some of his best work.

    • Trivia
The show was in the format of 5 mini versions of his show, Dennis Miller Live. They each included a monologue, rant, guest (always Norm McDonald, making "cock" references), and Big Picture segment. Each segment even had an instrumental version of "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" done in music appropriate to the era of time discussed. In fact, the version of the song for the 1980-2000 segment was an actual instrumental recording of the song for radio stations with a "beautiful music" format.
