    Engaging.

Superintendent Hicks and Sergeant Riley are called to the scene of a robbery, one where explosives were used, a scene where a body lays dead.

Definitely one of the more engaging stories, I enjoyed it, well paced, well imagined, and a bit more gritty than is usually the case.

To begin with, I really enjoyed those early sequences, who can even contemplate a quiet and silent London, those shots of empty streets, and all that new infrastructure were terrific, how times have changed.

Fingers may not have been the brightest villain to appear on the snow, but he was definitely one of my favourites, great to see a young Harold Godwin, unmistakable with that wonderful voice, and one of those actors that strangely seemed to look older even when they were young.

A good supporting cast here, Carl Jaffe was good, Delphi Lawrence was excellent, she was prolific in shows from the era.

    7/10.

    The Square Mile Murder

In the city of London, a travel agent is in for a surprise when he opens shop in the morning.

Someone broke into his safe but a dead body was left behind. It is a job for Scotland Yard.

Superintendent Hicks recognises the dead man. He was a an expert safe cracker. Pretty soon his wife is also found dead after meeting a mysterious man in a restaurant.

The police trace the man as Possner, someone involved in the clothing trade. Knowing he might be looking for another safe cracker.

The police send in 'Fingers' McLeod freshly out from prison. Hicks needs to trust Fingers to get the job done. However Mrs Possner is suspicious of the new boy.

This was one of the last of the Scotland Yard shorts. It is a good story that has illicit love and betrayal.

However it was not clever of Fingers to ring the police and give information from his new employer's phone.

Prominence given to the Devonshire seaside town of Balcombe, located close to a Somerset quarry. In fact Balcombe is a village in West Sussex close to Gatwick airport, 180 miles east of the location. Devon does have a Salcombe which is 40 miles south of Dartmoor prison, and 90 miles away from the quarry.
