    An icon

By viewing the life and times of Ruth, you experience a century of gay black history through interviews with Ruth and recreated scenes of this inspiring woman's past. From her first crush on her high school gym teacher in 1917 (!) to the last time she had sex (at 95) and everything in between. With girlfriend ‘Babe', Ruth bought a house, which provided a meeting place for the black gay community in the Midwest in the 40's, 50's and 60's.

You will cry watching this documentary. Nowadays, with so many gay and lesbian youngsters out and about, it's worth reflecting on and honoring those who made it possible. Ruth Ellis is a exceptional person and deserves to be watched and listened to.

An Intimate Portrait of an Amazing Woman

At 100 years of age, Ruth C. Ellis is the oldest living lesbian activist. In this lovingly produced video/film documentary, Ms. Ellis life is traced from her birth, her family, relationships and her experiences throughout the 20th century as a black, openly gay woman.

One cannot help but be endeared by her personality, charm and forthrightness. Her agility and alertness is evident in her interviews, which serves as the narrative thread that runs throughout the program.

Ms. Ellis not only gives history a voice (one that should be heard), but a heart as well.

    Wonderful, inspiring documentary

Ruth Ellis discovered her Lesbian self in 1919, at the age of twenty. By the time she retired from owning her own print shop, she was 65 and the civil rights movement was just getting started. Now, at 100, she's an inspirational figure in the Detroit women's movement, and this film explains why: she's feisty, dedicated, and completely honest about herself. In the space of an hour, I learned about Lesbian and black life in the '40s and '50s, what it's like to have a one night stand at the age of 95, and the desires of the modern feminist and Lesbian community for role models and leaders. A recommended film.
