Michael Gambon, Dumbledore in ‘Harry Potter’ Franchise, Dies at 82
Image
Michael Gambon, the Irish-English actor best known for his role as Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore in six of the “Harry Potter” movies, has died, Variety has confirmed. He was 82.

“We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon,” his family said in a statement. “Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia.”

While it is easier for a character actor, often working in supporting roles, to rack up a large number of credits than it is for lead actors, Gambon was enormously prolific, with over 150 TV or film credits in an era when half that number would be impressive and unusual — and this for a man whose body of stage work was also prodigious.

He played two real kings of England: King Edward VII in “The Lost Prince” (2003) and his son, King George V,...

‘The Woman in White’ on PBS Review: The BBC Turns a Familiar Mystery Into an Enraging Feminist Indictment
The BBC-produced “The Woman in White,” premiering on PBS’ “Masterpiece,” turns the oft-adapted Wilkie Collins novel into a five-hour miniseries and creates the most feminist version to date. Set in Victorian England, the gothic tale examines the twisted circumstances surrounding the arranged marriage between young heiress Laura Fairlie (Olivia Vinall) and the much older Sir Percival Glyde (Dougray Scott). She and her half-sister Marian Halcombe (Jessie Buckley) become embroiled in a grand conspiracy that also involves a mentally ill woman dressed in white. Despite its period setting, the dangerous consequences of gender inequality make this story disturbingly relevant.

The update comes from writer Fiona Seres, who reteams with “Masterpiece” after adapting “The Lady Vanishes” in 2013 from the Ethel Lina White novel that also produced Alfred Hitchcock’s classic 1938 film. Like that project, “The Woman in White” explores the frustrations of a society that doesn’t listen to women or believe in their peril.

Foyle’s War – The Home Front Files
Foyle’s War

Kieran Kinsella

Last year, Acorn Media surprised some people but delighted many when they acquired the rights to ITV’s hit drama Foyle’s War. As part of the deal, Acorn persuaded Michael Kitchen and co. to sign on for a new series of the show which will air later this year. As long suffering fans will know, it has been three whole years since a new episode of the show hit the airwaves but you can refresh your memory of all things Foyle related by purchasing Acorn’s latest DVD boxset release. Foyle’s War: The Home Front Files includes all 22 previously broadcast episodes of the show. Acorn previously released the seven seasons of the UK show in six smaller DVD sets and alongside this mammoth boxset they are also re-releasing each of those sets in new slimline 3 or 4 disc packages.

If you’re unfamiliar with Foyle’s War,...

"House of Cards" Scribe Pens "War & Peace"
Legendary British TV scribe Andrew Davies has been hired to pen a six episode TV mini-series adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic "War and Peace" for The BBC. The project is scheduled to air on BBC One in 2015.

The story will remain based in war-torn 19th century Russia. Many of the philosophical elements are expected to be left out, with the series focusing on the human interactions, romance and family conflicts.

Davies penned the adaptation of the original UK "House of Cards" mini-series and its two sequels, along with film adaptations such as "Bridget Jones' Diary," "The Tailor of Panama," and "Brideshead Revisited".

He has worked on numerous mini-series including 1994's "Middlemarch," 1995's "Pride and Prejudice," 1998's "Vanity Fair," 1999's "Wives and Daughters," 2002's "Tipping the Velvet," 2005's "Bleak House," 2007's "Fanny Hill," 2008's "Little Dorrit," 2008's "Sense and Sensibility" and 2011's "South Riding."

Ian Carmichael obituary
Actor who brought sympathetic dimensions to the comic twerp Bertie Wooster and the shrewd detective Lord Peter Wimsey

Actor known for his roles as the archetypal blithering Englishman

Playing the archetypal silly ass was the sometimes reluctant business of the stage, film and television actor Ian Carmichael, who has died aged 89. In the public mind he became the best-known postwar example of a characteristic British type - the personally appealing blithering idiot who somehow survives, and sometimes even gets the girl. One of his most characteristic and memorable sorties in this field was his portrayal of Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim – the anti-hero James Dixon, who savaged the pretensions of academia, as Amis had himself sometimes clashed with academia when he was a lecturer at Swansea. Appearing in John and Roy Boulting's 1957 film, he was able to suggest an unruly but amiable spirit at the end of its tether,...
