    Surprisingly GOOD!!! Serious stuff....

I didn't expect much when i first saw this movie. I'm a big fan of Sanjay Dutts Recent releases like Vaastav, Munnabhai, ETC. This film was surprisingly good stuff. Powerhouse performance by Sanjay Dutt. Hathyar meaning weapon, tells the story of a small family. Sanjay Dutt plays the son whos finding trouble looking for a job. After his father dies, he is left to support himself and mother. What impressed me about this movie is the way it deals with poverty. The mother and son relationship was superbly acted by Sanjay and Asha. Sanjay realises that he is the man of the house and breadwinner. My personal favourite scene of the movie is when Sanjay goes to desperate measures to provide food for his hungry mum and himself by stabbing his victim in rage for his wallet. Serious stuff..Must See

I have found memories about this movie..

...I saw it in 89 and have been waiting for it to show up on DVD.

From what I can remember, it is very good movie with great performance by Dutt and Dharmender. Dharmender, in my view, is one of the most under-rated actor.

JP Dutta, for my money, almost always makes great movies.

    Best movie ever.

Jp dutta's Hathyar best movie i have ever seen. Direction, story, concept of the movie simply superb. Based on gun culture in society. Finest ever performance by Sanjay Dutt ,Rishi Kapoor and Paresh Rawal.

    Great Movie

Hathyar has been one of my fav movies since i first saw it as a kid. The scene where Sanjay runs behind the buck and then when he stands in the middle of the road while Amrita Singh is taken back to her house are classic. Great J.P.Dutta direction and absolutely stunning photography. Great acting and a powerhouse script. Sanjays helplessness as a son and Asha Parekh's struggle to keep sanity in the face of poverty and love for her son results in a winding struggle between right and wrong. The movie was made way ahead of its time as audiences in the 80s were still used to seeing Mithun jumping from ground level to the 1st floor. HA.. Hathyar a movie Not to be missed....

One of The Highly Underrated Movies of All Time

I must admit that 'Hathyar' is JP Dutta's finest film till date and a highly underrated movie of our times. From the opening scene where a kid plays with a gun till the end when he remembers his father stopping him from doing so, it's a sheer delight. Hathyar, when released in 1989, was much ahead of its time and this was a major reason of its failing at the box-office. It's also Sanjay Dutt's best performance till date and I rate it above Vastav, which was too obvious. The camera work by JP Dutta loyalist, Ishwar Bidri, was awesome, whether showing the barren lands of UP to the concrete jungle of Mumbai. The scene where Sanjay Dutts shoots a member of the opposite gang at the Bandra swamp is sheer magic. Beside Sanjay Dutt, Dharmendra, Rishi Kapoor, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Paresh Rawal gave commendable performances. If released today, Hathyar surely would have loved by the movie goers. For me it's a must watch.
