Whatever gets you thru the night.

A disappointment after Greville 's "Menaces ",this follow up is an overblown melodrama , which,in its own way ,represents the moral of the Vichy government : being a famous thespian may be estimable, but a nurse is much more useful for the community;"what do you do ,says she,to the petulant woman in the hospital (Jane Marken ) to help your country?".

As for the story ,it's a disjointed melodrama ,with over-the -top scenes : nurse Romance rocking a dying patient with a lullaby to her (last) sleep ; the husband reappearing in the X rays; the final scene of "Manon Lescault" on stage in which the roles are somewhat reversed (Des Grieux dies in Manon's arms )....

Jacques Prévert reportedly collaborated to the screenplay but it's hard to find his touch : perhaps the puns about the prompter who has a medical exam concerning his hearing,and the reflexions on the meaning of life .

As for Greville ,you will better off with "menaces" i mention above,"remous" ,dealing with male impotence , a risqué subject for 1933 ,or "le diable souffle" .
