The National last night (April 30, 2024) was the worst exercise in journalism I have ever witnessed on C. B. C. The first 20 minutes at least (I couldn't take any more) was devoted to the student protests at Columbia University rather than any number of more significant news events in Canada or abroad. Almost the entire coverage featured a camera shot of NYPD officers standing in the street doing nothing. Adrienne Arsenault tried desperately to ad-lib a commentary but really had nothing to say. Why didn't the producer/director of the show switch to another story when it was so obvious that this one was going nowhere?
I used to love The National. I still watch it but this 4-host format is not working. My suggestion: Keep Hanomansing... as he is the best anchor. Lose Andrew Chang. Send Rosemary Barton back to Power & Politics, which is where she really excels..Adrienne Arsenault is excellent as a field reporter, esp in depth stories from conflict zones.. have her as the alternate anchor.
This is a government funded one sided broadcast company that spreads hate and lies on a daily basis.

The passing of Rex Murphy brought to mind, the current state of "The National" in light of Mr Murphy's significant contributions to Canada. As a Canadian taxpayer, I hope you will consider the following constructive observations and suggestions:
1. The National's tribute to Mr Murphy lacked authenticity and did not adequately reflect the respect he earned from Canadians. He challenged our thinking and respected our intelligence, even when we may have disagreed. He did not work in a silo.
2. Mr Murphy always displayed honesty and integrity in challenging questionable political motives and claims - he favored neither the left nor right. CBC increasingly lacks this fair approach to represent opinions on both sides of: the House of Commons; the Middle East conflict, etc. . 3. Where is political analysis? Terrance McKenna is an outstanding journalist who exemplifies such journalistic excellence. Unfortunately, too many topics/news items are superficially presented without probing deeper. For example, "facts" presented by terrorist organizations are simply presented without the required investigative rigor. In addition to Israel, where is your investigation of Hamas? The limitations and caveats of the information presented are seldom given to the audience.
Mr. Murphy served the country and leaves an exemplary legacy and we will all miss him. Many Canadians (Google Review Rating of 1.4) indicate that CBC has lost its way and many Canadians are disappointed with the quality of The National newscast. A new direction and commitment is needed now more than ever. Please consider these comments as you review your next strategic plan.

Like the CBC online edition, the National has lost its independence and is now heavily focused on opinion instead of just reporting the news. Rosemary Barton is a Liberal shrill and has no credibility as a true journalist. I seldom watch this drivel and opt for other sources of news instead.
