Much has been said about Marvel Studios' plans for T'Challa in recent weeks. Social media scoopers appear to agree; the role will be recast, likely for the next Avengers movies and almost certainly for Ryan Coogler's Black Panther 3. The trades, meanwhile, have yet to chime in.
While the Multiverse opens the door to a new T'Challa being plucked from another reality, all signs still point to young Toussaint/T'Challa II being aged up post-Secret Wars to pick up where his father left off.
The Cosmic Circus' Alex Perez has shared some inside intel of his own today, confirming that he's also heard Toussaint will take over the mantle in Black Panther 3. He also acknowledges that this "doesn't eliminate the possibility of other Black Panther variants showing up in the Avengers' films beforehand."
Interestingly, Perez adds, "[I've heard that] compared to the previous films, Ryan Coogler is interested in leaning into a...

In recent times, dark and action-packed series have gained quite some popularity, with names like My Hero Academia, Chainsaw Man, Jujutsu Kaisen, and so many more. However, all of them were subjected to criticism as they fell short in front of Tatsuya Endo’s Spy x Family, which has hooked viewers and readers alike, as they keep returning for more for all the right reasons.
The Forger family. Credits: Credits: Wit Studios and CloverWorks
The series is a perfect blend of humor, action, slice-of-life, and comedy that enhances the viewers’ experience. What makes the series all the more entertaining is how the characters make our hearts race. This was possible as every character was fun to watch and underwent an unbiased sense of development.
However, fans will be perplexed to learn that this outstanding feat by Endo-Sensei was possible because of his detachment from all the characters of the series.

The early 2000s was a time when what is now known as the Korean New Wave exposed the western world to what the cinema of the South Korea could offer in various genres. One genre in particular that the cinema of the country got to be best known for then, and to a degree still is, is the romantic melodrama. Among the many features within it that ended up impressing both the domestic and international audience was “Failan”, starring Choi Min-sik, who had just been introduced to international audiences a couple years back in “Shiri” and a pre-international fame Hong Kong actress Cecilia Cheung.

Director Ryan Coogler remains faithful to the original Marvel comics when adapting Black Panther into a solo superhero movie. However, when it comes to the sequel there is an issue surrounding a character, who only appears for less than two minutes on screen.
The character in question is Prince T’Challa II, also known as Toussaint. He is the son of Nakia and the late King T’Challa of Wakanda.

While the Golden Age of Korean cinema is considered to be the period from 1955 to 1972, and the Renaissance that essentially lasts until today starting with the modern blockbuster Shiri, which was released in 1999, there is also another period in local cinema, 1988-1996, that saw the emergence of a number of directors who truly pushed the boundaries of what was considered Korean cinema at the time, essentially paving the way for what followed next. Benefitting from the loosening of censorship and overall control in the industry in terms of topics and themes, directors such as Kim Dong-won, Lee Myung-se, Park Kwang-soo and Chung Ji-young came up with movies that took a realistic look at some of the most crucial events of local history, while also criticizing a number of issues the system faced at the time. The split of the two Koreas, the Gwangju massacre and the authoritarian rule, capitalism, worker's rights,...

Sejong the Great, the fourth King of the Joseon dynasty, is widely considered as one of the greatest rulers of ancient Korea. A large part of the credit for that goes to the many scientific advances the kingdom saw during his reign and his introduction of the Hangul alphabet. 2019 saw two depictions of the emperor on-screen, the first being Song Kang-ho's version in “The King's Letters”, which specifically is about the latter achievement. The other was in “Forbidden Dream” by melodrama supremo Hur Jin-ho, returning to the historical genre after “The Last Princess”. Using both the scientific advances and the creation of the alphabet as a backdrop, it tells of Sejong's great friendship with Jang Yeong-sil, an inventor and astronomer who Sejong had a lot of affinity for.

One of the leading actors of his generation, Korea’s Choi Min-sik is tackling his first TV role in some 25 years, with Disney+ crime drama series “Big Bet.” Choi says the gamble was a challenge, but ultimately worth the risk.
While he has notched up iconic cinema roles in “Oldboy” “Shiri,” “I Saw the Devil,” Luc Besson’s “Lucy” and all-time Korean box office record holder “Roaring Currents,” Choi’s last significant TV role was in dark comedy “The Moon of Seoul” (aka “Seoul ui Dal”) in the 20th century’s pre-streaming era.
Choi says that the changes in the TV industry are palpable and mostly for the better.
“Dramas are now produced entirely in advance of broadcast. Before, we would have what we call ‘on-the-spot’ scripts. They would be literally written on the day of filming, which left very little time to memorize the lines,” Choi told Variety.

2022 was finally the year that the Korean box office, after the pandemic, was defibrillated back to life. Producers and distributors were finally confident that the time was right for big budget, blockbuster projects, that had long been queueing up for a release, to start making their way to the theatres. After having to resort to Ott streaming and generally smaller scale films, the audience too was hungry to see high-value productions, entertainment and their favorite stars on the big screen and thronged to the theatres, lapping up these releases. So much so that 2022 saw four new films make their way into the 100 highest grossing Korean films of all tie at the domestic box-office, with Ma Dong-seok’s “The Roundup” even rolling comfortably into the top 10.
2023 too began strongly, with the long-in-production “The Point Men” starring Hwang Jung-min and Hyun Bin and the Sol Kyung-gu led ensemble spy thriller “Phantom” opening the year strong.

Marvel sequel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has now begun filming, and with that news has quickly followed a potential logline for the movie. The reported plot description provides a lot of detail, including the reveal that Atlantis will make its MCU debut, and that a war between the fabled underwater city and Wakanda will be at the heart of the story.
"Both Wakanda and Atlantis are hidden civilizations with advanced technology and increased militaristic abilities that decided to separate themselves from the rest of the world for their own safety, and in a way, out of fear. Wakanda feared that their technology would be abused. Atlantis feared that surface dwellers would come and desecrate the mythical city just as they did so many years ago. One of the recurring themes within some of the most successful releases of the early Korean New Wave was the conflict between the two Koreas. Films like “Shiri”, “Jsa”, “Tae Guk Gi”, among others, all featured various sides of this dispute between the two nations. However, one feature to show a unique aspect of this issue was “Silmido”, which is based on a novel that is in turn based on an incredible true story, a story which the majority of the Korean public too was unaware of until the feature’s release. A massive critical and commercial success, “Silmido” would go on to be the first Korean production to attract over 10 million viewers and eighteen years since its release, it still sits comfortably within the top 20 highest-grossing Korean films of all time at the domestic box office.

South Korean cinema, and particularly the mainstream part, has been developing at an uncanny pace since the beginning of the New Wave, which started during the last years of the 90s, and resulted in the renewed interest of local audiences for local movies. “Shiri” (1999) kickstarted the phenomenon by becoming the first film in South Korean history to sell more than two million tickets in Seoul alone. The success continued with a number of other blockbusters while by the 2000s, and particularly after “Oldboy”, the country’s cinema started to attract significant international attention. The “trend” continued during the next years, and currently, S. Choi has previously shown enthusiasm to return to the small screen in various interviews.
It will be the first tv production of B.A. Entertainment, who previously produced the smash hit “The Gangster,...

The Korean New Wave in cinema really kicked off late-90s onwards, when South Korean blockbusters, financed partly or largely by large conglomerates’ fundings, began to have an exposure in the West, courtesy of home video releases and limited theatrical engagements. Of these, arguably the first major hit, and certainly among the first South Korean films that many western audiences saw, was Kang Je-gyu’s “Shiri”, a massive financial and critical success domestically that took the west by storm when it was introduced there too. Backed by technology giants Samsung, “Shiri” was at that time the biggest budgeted cinematic project in Korea and one that pulled in vast dividends.

For the portion of Western audiences previously stuck behind the one-inch barrier of subtitles, the multi-Oscar haul by Bong Joon Ho’s dark and provocative “Parasite” was a revelation. But for savvy viewers who had long ago moved past a perceived language barrier, Bong’s win is instead the latest splash in a succession of South Korean milestones that span film, music and television.
Thanks to vibrant talent and years of industrial-scale preparation, the rich Korean entertainment scene has solid foundations. Smartphones, YouTube and Netflix are now carrying the Korean wave, known as “Hallyu,” farther and faster.
In August alone, boy band BTS’ latest confection, “Dynamite,” racked up a record number of plays on YouTube and topped the Billboard music charts, while Korean zombie movie “Peninsula” smashed the Asian box office, and another zombie offering, “#Alive,” briefly was the most-watched item planetwide on Netflix.

Sejong the Great, the fourth King of the Joseon dynasty, is widely considered as one of the greatest rulers of ancient Korea. A large part of the credit for that goes to the many scientific advances the kingdom saw during his reign and his introduction of the Hangul alphabet. 2019 saw two depictions of the emperor on-screen, the first being Song Kang-ho’s version in “The King’s Letters”, which specifically is about the latter achievement. The other was in “Forbidden Dream” by melodrama supremo Hur Jin-ho, returning to the historical genre after “The Last Princess”. Using both the scientific advances and the creation of the alphabet as a backdrop, it tells of Sejong’s great friendship with Jang Yeong-sil, an inventor and astronomer who Sejong had a lot of affinity for.

“Parasite” star Song Kang-ho will head the cast of airborne disaster action move “Emergency Declaration.” Jeon Do-yeon and Lee Byung-hun co-star, making “Declaration” one of the powerful casts ever assembled in a Korean movie.
The film is in pre-production and aiming for an end-of-year release. Leading studio Showbox will begin pre-sales during this week’s European Film Market.
Showbox pitches it as ”an airborne blockbuster about an aircraft forced to declare an emergency when an unprecedented terror incident occurs in-flight.” It is to be directed by Han Jae-rim, who previously enjoyed success with “The King” and the Song-starring 2013 drama “The Face Reader.”
Jeon won a best actor award at Cannes in 2007 for “Secret Sunshine,” and has other credits that include “Untold Scandal” and “The Housemaid.” Lee is one of Korea’s finest thespians and a rarity who has managed to build a career on both sides of the Pacific. His...

Since early age, Kristína Aschenbrennerová (1980) had planned to become a film actress like Greta Garbo. Fortunately, quite soon she realized her qualities lie elsewhere and graduated in film theory and history. She works at Slovak Film Institute/National Cinematography Centre as Slovak cinema promotion officer and event coordinator. Since 2009, she programmes, until recently with Adrián Žiška, Eastern Promises, a section of Iff Art Film Fest Košice dedicated to mainstream and genre films from East and Southeast Asia. On not that regular basis, she gets to select (Asian) or recommend shorts for Isff Brno 16, and in 2017 she proudly recommended a few fabulous films to Slovak Queer Film Festival. Occasionally writes and tries to keep a Wp blog under an alias Anomalilly. Talks a lot.
We speak with her about Eastern Promises and Art Film Fest, Asian cinema, the Slovak audience, and many more topics.

The Locarno Film Festival will pay tribute to leading South Korean actor Song Kang-ho, marking the first time this prestigious prize has gone to an Asian film personality.
Song, 52, who made his big screen debut at 29 in Hong Sang-soo’s edgy “The Day a Pig Fell into the Well” (1996), has since “never stopped experimenting,” said the Swiss fest dedicated to indie cinema in a statement.
The fest also underlined the versatile talent’s masterful turns in works by South Korean filmmakers such as Bong Joon-ho, Hong Sang-soo, Jee- woon Kim and Park Chan-wook that have propelled him to top star status at home and made him an international name.
His standout roles include turns in big-budget blockbuster “Shiri” (1999) directed by Kang Je-gyu; Kim Jee-woon’s wrestling comedy “The Foul King” (2000); Park Chan-wook’s “Joint Security Area” (2000); “Sympathy for Mr Vengeance” (2002) and “Thirst” (2009), Bong Joon-ho’s “Memories of Murder” (2003) and “Snowpiercer...

One thing is certain: Lee Su-jin’s second feature “Idol” (“Woo sang” in the original language) is a head-spinning thrill ride of a movie which, in the end, can become exhausting. Having in mind Lee’s previous feature, a minor sensation on both the genre and the regular film festival circle titled “Han Gong-ju”, Idol’s inclusion in the Panorama selection of this year’s Berlinale is completely justified, even though the film certainly has narrow limits regarding the exposure outside of its native South Korea and hard core genre circles.
Basically, it is a story about two fathers connecting by a hit-and-run accident involving their sons. The title character of sorts Koo Myung-hui (Han Seok-kyu of “Shiri” and “The Berlin File” fame) is a politician on the move, whose career prospects seem promising due to his respectable, honest and trustworthy public image. His son Johan is the supposed perpetrator,...

2018 was, by most accounts, a mixed bag of a year for South Korean cinema. Where critics darling Lee Chang-dong returned to the scene after an eight-year hiatus to much fanfare and applause with “Burning”, small films like “Little Forest” and “Intimate Strangers” ended up being more well received than tentpole blockbusters like Kim Jee-woon’s “Illang: The Wolf Brigade”, for example. 2019 has begun very strongly, with “Extreme Job” going on to become the 2nd highest grossing South Korean film of all time on the domestic box-office. Here’s a list of some films we can look forward to with much anticipation in the remainder of the year.

Korea boxoffice remains solid
SEOUL, South Korea -- Korean films continued to pull more than 40% of the domestic boxoffice for another quarter, further cementing the gains made in this unusually strong local industry. But unlike the past three years, 2002 has brought no single, overwhelming hits as there has been the past three years with films such as Friend ($44 million, 2001), JSA ($28 million, 2000) and Shiri ($29 million, 1999). Instead, the boxoffice has largely been driven by a steady stream of medium-sized hits and a major expansion in the number of films released overall. Already this year, all the top-10 Korean films have pulled in more than 1.3 million in admissions each; in 2001, the 10th-place film did not make it to 1 million.
