Once I had a love and it was a gas!

Like the other movies of Leon Mathot ("Cheri Bibi" "Aloha Le Chant Des Iles" "Le Revolté" "La Route Du Bagne "),"Les Loups Entre Eux" (wolves between them)has not aged well, let's be nice !

It's 1936,folks ,and a dangerous gas has been stolen by the Germans! Two spies (a woman,Renée Saint-Cyr,and a man ,Jules Berry (who looks more like Arsene Lupin than a spy)are set in a chocolate box enemy country to get the weapon back where it belongs

Germany ,1936 ,is under the Nazi's thumb but there is no hint at it till the 70th minute :five minutes of swastikas,"Heil Hitler" and patriot hymns ;all that remains essentially concerns a general and his son :you would never guess it,he falls in love with the French (female!) spy.

Max,the son,is the only interesting character in the whole movie ,but the part is largely underwritten:he did not want to follow his military dad's steps (he could have sung like Fogerty :"it ain't me !it ain 't me! although I'm military son";This boy gets that from his late sweet mom:so he has become an artist (a funny scene shows Berry pretending to be an art lover, praising a painting which he holds wrong side up).Max is a hippie from the thirties, wondering what's so funny about peace, love and understanding .His final decision may seem naive but predictable ,considering his faith in man's kindness -which was particularly at question in those years.
