Isle of Levant (1956)
* (out of 4)
This film was originally released in Switzerland where I'm sure it wasn't as controversial as it would have been when it was brought to America. In America it was narrated by E.V.H. Emmett and it centers on a man named Pierre who travels around Europe sketching various things. Eventually we get to a French resort where the people go around without any clothes on.
ISLE OF LEVANT is basically a very long and very boring wannabe TravelTalks episode. If you're unfamiliar with that series, it was produced by MGM and James A. FitzPatrick traveled around to various locations and showed off its history. This here is basically a long travelogue for the first thirty-seven minutes and then we finally get to the island and the clothing comes off.
This here is an early example of what's basically a nudie cutue picture. As was the case when these eventually made it big in America, we've got a B.S. "documentary" style but we know the real reason to watch this is for the nudity. We see the people running around, swimming and of course playing volley ball. The film is just downright boring, it takes forever to get to what you're wanting to see and it's certainly not very well-made.

I watched this because I wanted to see & learn more about the Isle of Levant. During a trip I had hoped to visit but never made it there.
The entire first half is four girls and their dog traveling to the French coast to get to Levant along with a few stops. Somewhat separately is Pierre, an artist also making the trip.
The second half is on the Isle. Now the description, other reviews and the keywords here on IMDB would give the impression you will see a lot of explicit nudity. No you don't. While the girls are topless on the island, nobody man or woman is bottomless. This is actually strange as full nudity is required in the areas they visit on Levant! That is until they go diving. Then for most but not all people the bottoms come off. You would still have to look carefully and not blink and you still won't see much. Then after the bottoms (usually G strings for women) go back on.
As I said I wanted to see & learn more about Levant. Unfortunately, you see very little of the island. There's a few historical sites yet not one is shown or mentioned. They gave no history of the island at all.
So I learned nothing. Saw almost nothing. But was successfully bored for over an hour.
