Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein tells the tale of misguided genius, as the titular doctor creates misshapen life through an experiment. But it results in the downfall of both the doctor and his creature.

Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is easily one of the most anticipated films of the year. But for Del Toro, it’s also the culmination of decades of dreaming. The Oscar-winning genre auteur has waited years to make his dream project, and now it’s finally coming this fall.
Del Toro’s waited so long to make Frankenstein, in fact, that he says you can see the echoes of it in all of his early films. In a new interview, he noted that you can go all the way back to his very first feature and see the story’s “DNA.”
“It’s a movie I wanted to make before I even had a camera,” Del Toro told Variety. “There’s the DNA of Frankenstein on Cronos, on Blade II, on Hellboy. And we were developing it at Universal before they passed. I pitched it everywhere. It’s been my Mount Everest to climb.

It took more than 20 years, $120 million and many pounds of prosthetics and makeup to allow Guillermo del Toro to bring his vision of “Frankenstein” to life.
The hero’s journey that del Toro traveled with one of filmdom’s foundational creatures is the subject of this week’s Variety cover story. “Frankenstein” stars Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac detail the difficult shoot that required long days in Scotland and Toronto. Over the years, there has been some impressive and diverse talent showcased internationally for the sake of good storytelling in cinema. Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa made the film ‘The Seven Samurai,’ which inspired an American film director to make ‘The Magnificent Seven.’ African-American film director Spike Lee has received mainstream recognition for his films, such as ‘She’s Gotta Have It,’ ‘Malcolm X,’ and Oscar-winning hit ‘BlacKkKlansman,’ which reminds his audiences of the history and modern-day struggles of the average African-American. In 2019, there was even recognition of the South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, who wrote and directed the four-time Academy Award-winning film ‘Parasite,’ a dark comedy thriller drama that tells a story about a poor South Korean family who takes advantage of a wealthy family. Amidst this international talent, three Mexican filmmakers, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, and Alejandro González Iñárritu, have earned the nickname the ‘Three Amigos’ for their groundbreaking contributions to cinema.

Not long after Blade’s future in the MCU got a grim update when it was revealed the Daywalker was now on the back burner, the original Marvel vampire is finally coming back to streaming. Paramount+ has announced that all three of Wesley Snipes’ Blade movies, starting with Blade (1998) and even including Blade II (2002) and Blade: Trinity (2004) will begin streaming on the platform on September 1. All three films were written by David S. Goyer, who also stepped behind the camera to direct Blade: Trinity after Stephen Norrington helmed the first Blade movie and Guillermo del Toro directed Blade II. In addition to Wesley Snipes, the Blade movies also star Kris Kristofferson as Whistler, with various stars like Stephen Dorff, Norman Reedus, and Ryan Reynolds joining the franchise in later installments.

David S. Goyer is more than willing to return to Blade if Marvel ever requires his assistance. The filmmaker recently offered an update on the long-gestating project.
Speaking to ComicBook, Goyer said he would be happy to revisit Blade if he was asked. "I've had a lot of people and journalists ask, 'Why don't you go in there and help them with it?' Prior to that happening, I hadn't really considered it. But I had my agent call Marvel about six months ago to say, 'Do you guys need any help with it?' And they said, 'No, we're good. We're on the right path now.' I wouldn't say no to it. It would be interesting to revisit it decades afterwards."
Goyer also addressed some of the difficulties the company has faced adapting the character. "I have been puzzled why they are having so much trouble because they already had Mahershala Ali.

Wesley Snipes was already a rising star in Hollywood, known for his roles in dramas and action films. He had worked with acclaimed directors and was building a reputation as a serious actor. His career seemed to be on a clear path toward dramatic roles and major awards.
However, a unique opportunity came his way that would challenge this trajectory. It was a comic book adaptation, a genre that, at the time, did not have the prestige it does today. His team was firmly against it, viewing the role as a step down for an actor of his caliber.
The film was 1998’s “Blade,” and the role was the half-human, half-vampire hero himself. Snipes’ representatives were concerned it would hurt his image. “Most of the representation I had at the time were very against me doing the Blade role,” Snipes recalled.

It's been six years since Mahershala Ali walked out on stage at Comic-Con in San Diego wearing a Blade hat. In front of thousands of rabid fans in Hall H, the Oscar winner revealed that he'd been cast as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Daywalker.
Since then, the movie has been through multiple creative teams and has even lost some cast members. Sets were built at one stage (including for an elaborate action sequence atop a train), but Blade hasn't come anywhere close to becoming a reality. And honestly, it feels like it might never happen.

It's hard to think of another Marvel Studios project that has struggled as much behind the scenes as the upcoming Blade film. First announced alongside several post-Endgame projects in July 2019, Blade has since had a revolving door of writers and directors, each leaving the project due to one creative difference or another. Filmmakers like Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange would come and go, with the release and production start dates changing in perpetuity. As of March 2025, development on the film has been paused, with no further updates regarding when it can be expected. Its place in the MCU timeline is now in jeopardy, especially as the event films Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars get closer with each passing day.

David S. Goyer wrote Blade and Blade II, two comic book movies widely considered among the genre's best. He later wrote and directed the disappointing Blade: Trinity, and moved on from that with The Dark Knight Trilogy and, eventually, Zack Snyder's Man of Steel.
Wesley Snipes played Blade in Goyer's movies, while Mahershala Ali was announced as the McU's new Daywalker at the San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. However, the pandemic massively delayed Marvel Studios' plans for the movie, as did 2023's Hollywood strikes.
The Blade reboot has lost a seemingly endless list of writers and directors. It's also been undated for a while now, making claims that it's on "indefinite hold" not in the least bit surprising.
Talking to Josh Horowitz for Batman Begins' 20th anniversary, Goyer addressed fans who believe he's the right person to make Marvel Studios' Blade a reality.
"I'm pretty much still not in a comic book place.

Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein continues a rating trend for the iconic monster story. The upcoming Frankenstein features a star-studded cast that includes Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, Mia Goth, Charles Dance, Christian Convery, Ralph Ineson, and Christoph Waltz. It marks del Toro's first reimagining of an iconic Universal monster since his Oscar-winning 2017 movie The Shape of Water drew inspiration from 1954's Creature from the Black Lagoon.

A remake of the 1966 science fiction adventure film Fantastic Voyage has been making its way through development hell for decades now, and for most of that time it has had James Cameron attached as a producer. At one time, Cameron was working with Roland Emmerich to develop the project, and at another time he had chosen Shawn Levy to direct the film. Along the way, David S. Goyer was hired to write the screenplay – and for one stretch of time, Goyer and Cameron were working with director Guillermo del Toro to get the new Fantastic Voyage into production. The project has never gotten that far, though. Cameron was talking about the project as recently as last year, but it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. Now, Goyer has said that he would like to get it back on track with del Toro back at the helm.

A collaborator of Guillermo del Toro hopes to remake an Oscar-winning sci-fi movie originally released in 1966. Del Toro, known for bringing chilling creatures and other fantasy elements to life, has garnered mainstream recognition and a loyal following from the Hellboy and Pacific Rim franchises. However, he has also created many celebrated and award-winning films, including the dark fairytale-like Pan's Labyrinth and his fantastical romance and Best Picture winner The Shape of Water.
Throughout his career, del Toro has worked alongside frequent collaborators, including some who have voiced characters for Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio and who will appear in his upcoming Frankenstein adaptation. Behind the camera, he has continued partnering with other Hollywood creatives, notably David S. Goyer, who wrote and executive-produced Blade II. Since then, Goyer and del Toro have produced the folk horror movie Antlers and Goyer served as a writer for an installment of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities.

Netflix has shared a new update on the upcoming Frankenstein film from revered filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water). The update comes straight from this year's big Tudum event hosted by Netflix.
Based on the original story by Mary Shelley, the new Frankenstein is written and directed by del Toro. It is set during the 19th century with Oscar Isaac (Moon Knight) playing Dr. Victor Frankenstein, while Jacob Elordi (Euphoria) also stars as Frankenstein's Monster. While this is a story that has had countless adaptations in years past, many fans are looking forward to seeing what del Toro can do differently with the iconic horror tale. The new update from Tudum will also help further give fans a clue about what's in store.

Vampires are quite the trend right now, aren’t they?
In pop culture, they’ve crept everywhere. So much so that there’s something for everyone to enjoy. All the more reason for a film centered around Blade to seize the moment while expanding on Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) lore.
As fans are aware, a future Blade film has been cast into development hell. Even Marvel Studios has poked fun at this, with Wesley Snipes’s version of the Daywalker casting shade in 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine. “There’s only ever gonna be one Blade.”

On the surface, the premise of a Blade film seems simple. It doesn’t need to tie too deeply into the MCU. All Blade needs to do is violently vanquish the vivacious, vampiric villains of the eve. What’s the hold-up? Are the Marvel and Disney executives trying to ice skate uphill?...

Superhero movies have surged in popularity over the past decades, with the MCU standing as one of the largest and most lucrative cinematic universes today. While many modern superhero films lean towards PG-13 ratings with action-packed thrills and intrigue, some embrace elements of horror and gore.
Fans on Ranker recently cast over 20K votes to determine their top superhero movie of all time, yielding results that may catch you off guard.
10. ‘Unbreakable’ (2000)
M. Night Shyamalan isn’t known for making superhero films, so when he released ‘Unbreakable,’ it was a surprising departure. Even more surprising was its quality, leading to a trilogy of unconventional superhero movies. The film eschews conventional horror, focusing instead on psychological depth.

Comics, for decades, have been an integral mainstay of popular literature. Though often undermined and unappreciated by many, superheroes and many others have touched the lives of millions through the pages of their colourful worlds. It’s been a long, strange journey for the comic book genre, and its path to cinematic success was equally challenging. We’ve seen Richard Donner’s “Superman” prove to the world in 1978 that there was, indeed, an audience for live-action superhero flicks, and then Tim Burton would reassure that notion again in 1989, with his groundbreaking blockbuster “Batman”. Then, of course, any ounce of progress that comics had made in the film industry was utterly destroyed and denounced upon release of the 1997 abomination that is “Batman and Robin”.
With help from “Blade” and “X-Men”, followed by Sam Raimi’s “Spider-Man” in 2002 and Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” in 2005, comic books had reclaimed their spot amongst...

With universe creator, Kevin Williamson, standing at the helm, another behind-the-scenes face from early on in the beloved film series will be lending his unique vision to the production, with composer Marco Beltrami officially confirming his return. The musician provided the score behind the first four films of the franchise before the directorial reins were taken over by Tyler Gillett and Matt Bettinelli-Olpin during the fifth and sixth titles. Now, audiences can expect to hear many of the same themes that helped to set the tone during the first four Wes Craven-directed features. Taking to Instagram to confirm the news, Beltrami responded to a comment on a post from 2023, telling one follower “don’t worry, I am” when he was asked to return to his position for Scream...

It’s quite surprising to me how far our society has come in the past few years. We’ve seen studios and the MPAA show filmmakers much more latitude than ever before. Case in point: Saltburn. Don’t get me wrong. I’ve seen much edgier exchanges than anything that transpires in Saltburn in indie pictures. However, I think Academy award-winning filmmaker Emerald Fennell moved the needle on what a filmmaker can get away with in mainstream cinema with Saltburn. I won’t go too in-depth on what makes the flick controversial to some. I’ll let you experience it for yourself as it’s probably better that way. However, before you take in the flick, you’ll want to check out auteur filmmaker Guillermo del Toro’s endorsement.

Donnie Yen is returning to the world of “John Wick,” this time with some additional responsibilities.
The martial arts legend will star as Caine, the blind assassin from “John Wick: Chapter 4,” in a new spinoff film for Lionsgate. Yen will also direct the movie, which will begin production in Hong Kong later this year. The announcement was made as part of Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation.
Like all other installments in the ever-growing “John Wick” franchise, the Caine movie will be produced by Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee through their Thunder Road banner and by series director Chad Stahelski, who produces through his 87Eleven Entertainment production company. Yen will also serve as an executive producer.
The movie’s logline is being kept under wraps, probably in a locked drawer at the Continental.
Mattson Tomlin has also joined the project to write the film; a previous draft was written by Robert Askins.

Guillermo del Toro isn’t one to follow the usual Hollywood playbook, and Pacific Rim proves it. While most action movies lean heavily on lone-wolf heroes, del Toro flipped the script by making trust the film’s core theme. The concept of drift compatibility, where two pilots must sync their minds to control a Jaeger, wasn’t just a cool sci-fi idea.

It was del Toro’s way of emphasizing teamwork, something he felt was sorely lacking in the genre. By forcing characters to rely on each other, Pacific Rim stood apart from the typical action spectacle, proving that giant robots and heart actually go hand in hand.

It has been 12 years since Pacific Rim hit theatres, and even though the possibility of a threequel from Guillermo del Toro remains unlikely, this hasn’t stopped fans from reliving the iconic monster/robot spectacle. Guillermo del Toro is one of the premier filmmakers of the modern age, who really cares for the art and not just the money involved. Vampires are one of the classic monsters of horror and fans of the genre thoroughly know their various flavors and tropes. From the suave and seductive to the hideous and cruel; from the rules-bound and magical to the mindless mutants, the iconic bloodsuckers have taken on many different forms. Numerous writers and directors have offered their own unique takes that have combined, or dropped, different styles. One director, however, has a truly original vision for vampires that has been appearing in his work for decades. Guillermo del Torro's contribution to the Blade franchise gave the world a new and gruesome interpretation of vampires that continues to stand out today.
While Blade's vampires were already well-established by the comics and the first film, del Torro introduced a special variant for Blade 2. Far from the monsters that can pass for human, these "Reapers" were a new type of threat and far more animalistic and savage.

Coming off the success of his first Cbm venture, Blade II, which marked a pivotal point in Guillermo del Toro’s Hollywood run, the revered filmmaker was then handed the keys to the adaptation for Dark Horse Comics’ Hellboy.
