    A Letter

While the rest of his platoon sleeps between battles, John Archer writes a letter home to his mother, praising her and the other women on the Home Front and ragging on the women who take things easy in this short propaganda film.

It's a fairly ordinary "we're all in it together" tone for much of this short subject, at least until Archer's voice-over narration of his letter becomes hectoring. True enough, 1943 was a turning-point year, and while the public discourse out of Washington and Hollywood was always optimistic, it was a year of desperate battles and shortages at home that were beginning to tighten on the civilians; tires wear out, so do clothes, and food rationing was never popular. Even so, was the shouting, hysterical reading of the lines the best that Archer and director Robert Webb could come up with?

Also, Emil Newman's Score is a March that sounds a lot like "Oh Canada".
