The martial arts genre is one of the broadest genres in media history. In the same way that the combat sports definition of martial arts encompasses hundreds of different fighting styles, the martial arts genre contains many stories, from grand historical epics covering the rise and fall of kingdoms to gritty modern-day dramas focusing on personal tales of violence and revenge.
The anime medium is no different, as many series have featured martial arts. However, these series are often nothing alike, covering many genres, tones, and styles. Because of this, finding the best martial arts anime movie can be tricky, as no two films use martial arts exactly the same way.

March has been fun for Netflix and will end with some fine additions. But be prepared. April is going to see a lot of changes. In other words, get ready to watch a lot of stuff quickly.
41 movies alone will be leaving Netflix at the beginning of next month. If you love such franchises as Rush Hour, you might want to binge-watch the first three films over the next week. Those will be leaving your favorite streamer on the first day of April.
The first three Karate Kid movies will be moving on as well. This is bad timing, as there will be a "new" Karate Kid flick coming to theaters in May. That one will star Ralph Macchio (of course) and Jackie Chan and is titled Karate Kids: Legends. The best scenario would be to see the previous films on Netflix before there is a theatrical release of a new addition to the series.

Move over South Korea, there’s a new player in the international arena. Japan’s famously risk-averse broadcasters and studios have woken up to the world outside Japan and are making a bold move on the U.S. and other international markets.
In part inspired by the global success of Korean content, but also aware that their huge domestic market is shrinking as Japan’s population declines, major players such as Toho, Tokyo Broadcasting System (TBS) and Fuji Television realize they need to find a source of revenue elsewhere in order to grow. And with deep libraries of anime, manga, movies, formats and games, they’ve also realized that they’re sitting on huge reservoirs of valuable IP.
Toho was among the first Japanese studios to make international moves, under forward-thinking president and CEO Hiro Matsuoka, taking back some rights to its Godzilla franchise and getting involved in merchandising in the U.

Some anime characters experience fates worse than death, enduring eternal and unorthodox punishments. Rika Furude in Higurashi: When They Cry lives through parallel worlds and tragic deaths, triggering disasters. Squealer in From the New World is sentenced to "Eternal Hell," living as an unrecognizable lump of meat.
Whether deserved or otherwise, it is not uncommon for anime characters to experience tragic events or suffer cruel deaths, either as a form of retribution or simply to establish their backstories. However, in a medium as creative as this, the worst possible punishment is seldom limited to simply dying. Instead, the anime characters who suffer a fate worse than death have to experience more unorthodox and horrific situations.
While death is seldom desired, its one redeeming aspect is that it's quick and definitive, which is exactly what separates it from these fates. Rather than being granted a proper ending, these characters are typically forced to experience repeated,...

Viz Media has compiled the entire Yu Yu Hakusho manga collection and put it online for fans to read.
Yyk's animation adaptation recently celebrated its 30th anniversary, but despite the franchise's popularity, the manga has been hard to find, especially in the digital sense. Physical editions can be found online, but their prices are rather high. However, Viz Media has corrected this issue by uploading every chapter, which is 175 total, to their Shonen Jump service. The first three chapters are free to read, while the rest can be unlocked by signing up for their monthly service. Readers can do so for under $3.

Regardless, Johnny was supposed to meet Ella in the U.S., something that didn’t happen, so she broke up with him.

As part of the press tour for his new film "Creed III" -- whose fight scenes bring the franchise into anime territory -- Michael B. Jordan listed his five favorite anime series on BBC Radio 1: "'One Piece,'" "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," "Bleach," and "Hunter x Hunter." These are all worthy picks, even though it "would take the average person over 957 hours ... to complete Jordan's top five anime recommendations," as Isaiah Colbert said at Kotaku. "One Piece" has lasted for over a thousand episodes. "Dragon Ball" remains one of the most popular anime ever. "Naruto" featured some of the wildest fight scenes in anime history, while "Bleach" at its best was just cool. "Hunter x Hunter" is messier, spanning two adaptations and a source comic that has yet to finish. But its creator Yoshiharu Togashi has over 3 million followers on Twitter, and his dedicated fans haven't given up on him yet.

The climax of "Creed III" brings a whole new visual language to the series. As Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) and Damian Anderson (Jonathan Majors) box for the title of world champion, we enter their shared headspace. The crowd disappears and the sounds of their cheering drop out, leaving just the two former friends to confront each other. The imagery becomes surreal: the borders of the ring become prison bars, reflecting Damian's bitterness about how much of his life was wasted in a cell. Throughout the fight, whenever one boxer lands a blow, the scene goes into slow motion emphasizing specific strikes.
The influence for this type of filmmaking is anime action scenes. Jordan, the star of this franchise and now its director too, is the king of the weebs. In an interview with Polygon, Jordan cited his favorite anime, "Naruto Shippuden," as the primary inspiration for the climax of "Creed III." After all,...

Many anime series come and go without leaving a lasting mark on the industry. Since it premiered in 1992, however, Yu Yu Hakusho remains one of the most talked about battle shonen shows more than 30 years later. Accordingly, it’s quite fitting that a robust Blu-ray box set is being released to celebrate the anime’s legacy on its 30th anniversary.
Yu Yu Hakusho chronicles Yusuke Urameshi’s earnest evolution from a juvenile delinquent to a courageous warrior who becomes humanity’s greatest defense against the spirit world. Yu Yu Hakusho ran for 112 episodes, became a flagship program for Funimation after the company started to branch out and dub series beyond Dragon Ball, as well as a reliable program in Cartoon Network’s Toonami anime block for four years. Yu Yu Hakusho’s two supplemental Ova installments from 2018, “Two Shot” and “All or Nothing,” will finally be dubbed for the first...

The series soon turns into a supernatural-themed battle shonen, and it's credited with inspiring many works that followed, including Togashi's own Hunter X Hunter. The manga inspired, besides the 112 episodes-long anime, two animated movies, a series of Ova's, videogames, merchandise, and most recently a Netflix live-action series
The YuYu Hakusho anime was licensed for North America in 2001 by Funimation, now Crunchyroll, and it aired on two popular Cartoon Network blocks, Adult Swim and Toonami.

Despite the fiasco that was Netflix's "Cowboy Bebop" live-action series and the atrocity that was their previous "Death Note" live-action movie, it seems the streaming service is determined to keep making live-action anime adaptations until something sticks. Indeed, they currently have several live-action anime re-imaginings in some stage of development, including projects based on "My Hero Academia," "One Piece," and "Yu Yu Hakusho."
To be fair, these are all sensible choices for live-action adaptations; each of these properties are incredibly popular and play into character archetypes, themes, and stories that resonate across the globe. "My Hero Academia" is literally about superheroes (and superheroes are very hot right now), while the other two are action-adventure stories with supernatural elements and tons of fights and comedic moments alike -- not to mention, they also feature characters with superpowers.

In another boost to its growing Japanese content slate, Netflix has greenlit a live-action movie adaptation of the classic Japanese manga City Hunter. Japanese leading man Ryohei Suzuki (Tokyo Mer, Segodon) has signed on to star in the iconic role of Ryo Saeba, with filmmaker Yuichi Sato (Kisaragi, Strawberry Nights and The End of the Tiny World) onboard to direct.
Created by manga artist Tsukasa Hojo, City Hunter was a staple of Japanese pop culture throughout the 1980s, selling over 50 million copies around the world. The franchise spawned a popular anime series and numerous feature-length adaptations, including movies made in Hong Kong (one starring Jackie Chan), France and mainland China, but this will be there first time the property is adapted as a live-action film in its native Japan.
Netflix describes the project as “a modern-day updated version of the manga, set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku.

"My Hero Academia" is one of the most popular manga and anime around often thought of as a successor to the "Big Three" of manga. The manga is consistently on top sales lists, and the anime remains as popular as ever even after six seasons.
It is easy to see why. The story, originally created by Kōhei Horikoshi, brings the best tropes of a shonen action manga into the world of comic book superheroes, taking inspiration from classic Marvel comics, especially "Spider-Man" ones. "My Hero Academia" takes place in a world where 80 population has some kind of superpower, or "quirk." We focus on Midoriya Izuku, a kid born without powers, but who yearns more than anything to follow in the footsteps of Japan's greatest hero, All Might (essentially the show's answer to Superman and Captain America). The 1990s were a great time for anime, loaded with classics like Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, and Cowboy Bebop. Each is important in its own way, but one series from that era stands out due to how different it is even from today's action series: Trigun.
Trigun is a space western series that got its start in the doomed manga magazine Monthly Shonen Captain, which went bust while the story was still ongoing in 1997. Fortunately, when creator Yasuhiro Nightow was approached to create a new series for the seinen (young men) magazine Young King Ours, Nightow was allowed to continue Trigun under the name Trigun Maximum, where it then ran for 10 more years. A 26-episode anime adaptation was released in 1998, which then came across to US shores and aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block in 2003, where it was cemented as a classic of the era.

If you regularly follow anime at all, you've almost certainly seen something about "Chainsaw Man." Whether it's the 18 million copies of the manga in circulation, cosplayers in simple black suits, or viral art of cute chainsaw dogs, the series has been a runaway train of popularity since it debuted in December 2018.
"Chainsaw Man" follows Denji, a young man saddled with debt whose only friend is a tiny chainsaw-faced devil named Pochita. When Denji is marked more profitable dead than alive by his debtors, Pochita willingly becomes his new heart, and Denji is reborn as the human-devil hybrid Chainsaw Man. That makes him a valuable asset to the Public Safety Devil Hunters, who give Denji a choice: join them and help keep the populace safe from devils or be put down like one.
Now that the anime is finally here, new audiences are getting a chance to find out what all the hype's about.

The bizarre anime series known as Flcl (read as "Fooly Cooly") made a splash in the US when it first appeared on Adult Swim in 2003. The reason why is a simple one: despite the series' madcap insanity, it has one of the best localizations of all time.
Localizing anime is more than just translating the script. Localizers have to consider cultural differences and how things will be regarded by their new foreign audience. In the past, that meant changing the names of characters to more familiar English ones (Like Sailor Moon's Usagi Tsukino being changed to Serena in the Dic dub of that series) and even censoring concepts like Buddhist prayer beads or shrines. Some series are harder to do this to than others, though, and anime purists have always hated these kinds of changes, as they're seen as patronizing to foreign audiences.

Under the agreement, The Seven’s creative team “will produce multiple original live-action titles that will be exclusively available to Netflix,” the two partners said Tuesday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The new agreement builds on prior work Netflix has done both with TBS and The Seven’s key creative team. Akira Morii, who leads development and production at The Seven, recently collaborated closely with the streamer as the driving producer behind its breakout Japanese original Alice in Borderland, which is set to return for a second season next month. Netflix has also picked up several TBS shows for its service, including Japan Sinks: People of Hope, The Future Diary, and Let’s Get Divorced.

"Bleach" began its run in the popular comics magazine Shonen Jump in August 2001. It was adapted into an anime three years later in October 2004, and quickly became one of the most popular anime and manga in its age bracket. Fans would refer to "Bleach" and its two Jump peers, "Naruto" and "One Piece," as the Big Three.
"Bleach" always boasted the lowest sales numbers of the three, especially in Japan where "One Piece" was king. But "Bleach" made up for this by being the most stylish comic of its day. Its character designs, fight sequences and paneling had a certain je ne sais quoi that kept it relevant against heavier hitting opponents in the magazine. The fact that its hero, Ichigo, was a jaded teenager from the beginning, rather than a rambunctious child like Naruto or Luffy, appealed to a fanbase that was going through its own adolescence.

Netflix is to lease two sound stages at Toho Studios in order to help the streaming platform expand its production of original Japanese content.
The move was announced Thursday (local time) in a blog post by Ozawa Teiji, Netflix’s manager for production management and live action in Japan.
The streamer will have access to both Stage 7 and Stage 10, and several in-studio facilities within Toho Studios, which is located in central suburban Setagaya Ward in Tokyo. The facilities have previously been home to Kurosawa Akira’s “Seven Samurai,” and the Godzilla film series.
The deal kicks off from April and was described as running across “several years.” Upcoming shows “Yu Yu Hakusho,” a live action series derived from a manga about a teenager and an underground detective, and “Sanctuary,” a gritty look into the underbelly of professional sumo, will be the first to occupy the studios.

The past decade has seen anime’s popularity increase in dramatic ways, whether through a much broader spectrum of series receiving dubs, the growing success of anime feature films in theaters, or the sudden prominence of streaming services. There’s never been a better time to be an anime fan and the medium has become more accessible than ever. There’s a lot of anime out there, but the wealth of new series can often blend together or not be given a fair chance. Additionally, there are definitely certain types of anime that are more prominently showcased outside of Japan.

Yoshihiro Togashi is considered by many to be one of the greatest mangakas of all time, with his work on Hunter x Hunter being the stuff of legends for all the right reasons. That being said, one has to admit that the brilliance of this particular manga could never have come to be had it not been for Togashi's previous series, Yu Yu Hakusho.

Since children often go to sleep on the earlier side, channels targeting them needed to find something else to air late at night. Nickelodeon had Nick at Nite and Disney had Vault Disney which aired both adult content and vintage programming. In 2001, competing children’s channel, Cartoon Network, decided to enter into the late-night programming game with Adult Swim, which kicked-off each night saying “All kids out of the pool”. However, unlike its competitors, Adult Swim aired mostly original shows and like its home-network, only offered animated series. Many of their shows were parodies based on the 1960s Hanna-Barbera cartoon, Space Ghost including Space Ghost Coast to Coast, The Brak Show, and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law, all of which are currently available for streaming on HBOMax.

There’s been a growing trend of some of the most popular anime from the ’90s and early 2000s returning with legacy sequels and modern reboots. It’s an exciting time for anime and this approach has brought back audiences who may have wandered away but are curious to get continuations to some of the favorite series from their youth. InuYasha, an anime that aired nearly 200 episodes since its debut during the height of the anime invasion of America, is the latest series to get such a treatment. InuYasha concluded back in 2010, but Rumiko Takahashi, the creator of the series has just announced, Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon, a sequel series that will center around the children of the characters from the original InuYasha.
Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon is set decades after the conclusion of the original series and follows the daughters of Inuyasha and his half-brother, Sesshomaru. Sesshomaru now has two half-demon twins,...

We’ve now seen a couple of instances of filmmakers wanting to take an anime show and turn it into a live-action movie, and every time it has been a flop. The obvious examples are of course The Last Airbender and Dragonball Evolution. However, what if people did these adaptations right? We picked some of our favorite anime shows that could potentially pull off the live-action treatment.

The Story: Yu Yu Hakusho is an anime from the '90s about Spirit Detective Yusuke Urameshi. Yusuke goes around with his friends fighting off demons to save the world. This could be adapted really well into a live-action movie using the Saint Beast story arc. We’d start off with Yusuke, already having his powers, receiving the call to Maze Castle, where the four Saint Beasts reside. Yusuke and supporting characters Kuwabara, Hiei, and Kurama would, of course,...
