Buddy cop movies are a staple of the action-comedy genre, pairing mismatched partners who must overcome their differences to chase down criminals. Director Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series is well-known for popularizing the buddy-cop genre, as Mel Gibson's reckless cop and Danny Glover's by-the-book officer made for plenty of mishaps and over-the-top action sequences. The 1980s/90s franchise went on to inspire a new wave of buddy cop films, including Rush Hour, Bad Boys, and Shanghai Noon.
More recently, the genre has evolved with hits like 21 Jump Street, The Other Guys, The Heat, and The Nice Guys. Among the modern entries in the genre, Ride Along carved out its own space thanks to the comedic energy of Kevin Hart, which paired hilariously with Ice Cube's stoic intensity. With a $154 million global box office haul, Ride Along became a surprise hit, setting the stage for its 2016 sequel.

Since making his acting debut in a 1989 episode of the NBC cop drama "In the Heat of the Night," Walton Goggins has been a most welcome presence on screens big and small. He first popped as police detective Shane Vendrell in the electrifying FX series "The Shield," and won our hearts as the scarily charming criminal Boyd Crowder over six brilliant seasons of FX's "Justified." We also love him as Baby Billy Freeman on "The Righteous Gemstones," and were blown away by his portrayal of The Ghoul on "Fallout." Goggins has been in some bad movies over the years (e.g. "American Ultra" and "Cowboys & Aliens"), but he certainly wasn't bad in them. The man seems wholly incapable of giving a bum performance.
Given that Goggins has become a favorite of filmmaker Quentin Tarantino since appearing in "Django Unchained," is it too much to hope that, whenever the director...

Brendan Fraser saved the world from mummies twice. How can someone follow up success like that? By saving the world from mummies a third time! When he signed on for another Mummy sequel, he was working with a new director and new writers. Some of his co-stars were recast. Some were absent. But his task remained the same: stop the rampage of a power-hungry walking corpse. That’s what he set out to do in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor… and it’s time to figure out What Happened to This Horror Movie.
Fraser played treasure hunter Rick O’Connell in the 1999 reboot of the Universal Monsters classic The Mummy and its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns. Both movies were written and directed by Stephen Sommers – but Sommers had no intention of directing a third Mummy film. After making the second one, he was ready to work on smaller projects.

Karate Kid: Legends' cast unites two sections of the franchise, bringing together actors and characters that are both unfamiliar and recognizable. Karate Kid: Legends' spin-off story was announced as early as 2022, capitalizing on the franchise's resurgence. While the ranking of Karate Kid movies often sees the latter two installments of the original trilogy looked back upon less fondly, the popularity of Cobra Kai began to usher in an era of revisionism for the franchise. With Cobra Kai season 6 ending the show, attention turned to the cinematic future of the martial arts series.

Dumbledore probably isn't the first character that action legend Jackie Chan would be compared to by moviegoers. However, the Harry Potter character is exactly who Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle believes Chan channeled while on the set of the forthcoming legacy sequel.
This surprising comparison was revealed after Entertainment Weekly asked Entwistle to describe Chan's presence on the Legends set. "Apart from being a wonderful human being who is very warm, he is the type of actor that does not leave. When his day is done, you would often find him sitting next to me, sitting next to the Dp, telling stories, talking to the actors," Entwistle shared. "Jackie Chan is a movie star, and that is something that you don't see so much anymore. He had the ability to come up with a tiny idea that I'd never thought of — and all of Jackie's tiny ideas are in the movie.

Karate Kid: Legends has a significant advantage over any of the other installments in the Karate Kid franchise, but it will still have to fight hard to prove itself. The upcoming movie, which is expected to hit theaters in May 2025, is a highly anticipated sequel to both 1984's The Karate Kid and its 2010 remake. Though the semantics of how these two stories will come together is still unclear, the union of Ralph Macchio's Daniel Larusso and Jackie Chan's Mr. Han is undoubtedly promising. Still, these two actors and their respective characters aren't all Karate Kid: Legends has going for it over its predecessors.
The Karate Kid franchise got its first movie in 1984, featuring Macchio's Daniel Larusso in the titular role. Then came The Karate Kid Part 2 in 1986 and The Karate Kid Part 3 in 1989, both of which featured Macchio and Pat Morita as the leads. In 1994, Morita...

The 2017 R-rated comedy movie Father Figures is a creative road movie that follows two adult brothers as they attempt to find their biological dad. After learning that their mother had lied to them their entire lives, Kyle and Peter are determined to figure out who their father is and set off across the country to find him. Along the way, they meet various men who could potentially be their father, and the brothers bond over their various adventures, creating a tale that is both funny and, at times, heartfelt.
Though the R-rated comedy received a lackluster response from critics and audiences and was not financially successful upon release, streaming audiences are now reassessing the movie and are realizing just how funny it actually is. Father Figures' quirky and underrated plot is supported by a cast of A-list stars that includes seasoned comedy veterans and expert dramatic actors.

Jackie Chan had long been a presence in Hollywood. He was just eight years old when he first appeared in a movie, and he has been dominating the industry ever since. Big and Little Wong Tin Bar, his first release, entered theaters in Hong Kong in 1962, and it was considered lost until it was rediscovered in 2016. The movie launched Chan's career, which has seen the actor star in a wide range of releases. He is best known for his old school kung fu movies, and his well-rounded performances have earned immense praise.
Rumble in the Bronx (1995), Shanghai Noon (2000), Kung Fu Panda (2008), and The Karate Kid (2010) were all mainstream hits that helped Chan define his name and identity within Hollywood. Even after achieving success, he still remains active in Hong Kong, having earned numerous acknowledgments from the Hong Kong Film Awards. The actor has even had the opportunity to serve as...

Jackie Chan is the kind of guy who crosses generations and is still recognized by everyone today. But it’s crazy to think about how he got to where he is, especially since it’s pretty rare for a martial arts star to blow up worldwide like he did. The truth is, from the very beginning, he knew exactly what he wanted, and he never backed down for anyone.

He had the chance to work with the biggest and best Kung Fu studio, but the terms just didn’t line up with what he wanted. It’s surprising he turned it down, especially since he didn’t have much of a name for himself back then. But looking at how far he’s come, it’s a move that deserves respect.

Writing duo Alfred Gough and Miles Millar may now be known for the likes of the hit Netflix series Wednesday and the long-awaited horror comedy sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but the pair once crafted a masterful blend of Western and action in 2000s Shanghai Noon. Starring martial arts icon Jackie Chan and Wedding Crashers star Owen Wilson, the movie expertly combines thrilling action, comedy, martial arts, and cowboys, with a sequel, Shanghai Knights, released in 2003. Sadly, despite the popularity of the Shanghai movies, a third movie never materialized, and Gough has now revealed why. It was Jackie Chans fault.

The martial arts western action comedy Shanghai Noon was a massive hit when it was released in 2000. While the film, starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, received a sequel, a third film in the franchise never got off the ground.
Speaking to Collider, Alfred Gough, who wrote the film with Miles Millar, revealed the current status of Shanghai Dawn. "We came very close. I think it was like 2017, 2018, we had a script and Jackie and Owen had verbally kind of committed," he explained. "Then, at a certain point, Jackie just decided he didn't want to do it. We weren't writing it, we were working with some younger writers, but we helped break the story, and they were writing it. So, that's where we are."

Shanghai Noon screenwriter Alfred Gough sheds light on the unmade third movie, what its story would have entailed, and why it ultimately fell apart. The 2000 action-Western starred Jackie Chan as a Chinese Imperial Guard who joins forces with Owen Wilson's outlaw in order to rescue a kidnapped princess. A sequel titled Shanghai Knights was released in 2003, taking the duo on a quest to recover a priceless artifact. A Shanghai Noon 3 was also announced in 2015, but few updates emerged after.
While Gough is currently known for his collaborations with Tim Burton on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Wednesday, the writer reflected on his early collaboration with Miles Millar, his co-writer on Shanghai Noon, while talking to Collider. Gough recalled how far development on a third movie had progressed before things fell apart, admitting it had reached the script stage and had partial involvement from Chan and Wilson. He said:

Overall, the 2000s were a rough decade for Westerns. Along with the 1980s, the 2000s saw the Western genre at its lowest point, both in terms of critical acclaim and box office success. Many high-profile Westerns from this era, such as The Missing, The Alamo, and Hidalgo, received mixed to negative reviews from critics and account for some of the decade's biggest box office bombs.
Although the 2000s as a whole represent a lull in Western filmmaking, the decade still provided some fantastic Westerns. The best Westerns of the 2000s encompass a wide variety of Western sub-genres, from traditional and revisionist Westerns to neo-Westerns and comedy Westerns. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford are among the greatest Westerns of the 2000s.

For many around the world, there’s one name at the top of the action totem pole: Jackie Chan, and today marks his 70th birthday.
If you only know him as a goofy martial arts comedian from the Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon series, then consider this a wake up call. Because when Jackie did things His way on his home turf, he churned out some of the best action movies you’ll ever see.
Many would point to Drunken Master II as Jackie’s magnum opus. Fair enough, that is an all-timer, but for an example of his best modern day martial arts action, mixed in with some crime drama and his signature comedy, one of his absolute best outings is 1985’s Police Story.

"New Fist of Fury" launched Jackie Chan's career as a leading man, showcasing his martial arts skills and professional relationship with director Lo Wei. "Snake in the Eagle's Shadow" established Chan's unique comedic fighting style, allowing him to relax in his performance and showcase his talent. "Shinjuku Incident" marked a departure from Chan's usual roles, showcasing his dramatic range and versatility as an actor beyond physical comedy.
Jackie Chan is a brilliantly talented actor, but only a few of his movies can be considered defining moments in his career. The Hong Kong national began performing as a child, appearing in small roles since the age of 5, and has since spent an incredible sixty-two years developing and honing his acting skills. While many will know Jackie Chan for his martial arts skills, he's proved his versatility as an actor and has a wide range of abilities as a performer.

A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!

Martial arts movies often borrow elements of Westerns, highlighting the contrast between the Old World and the New. The incongruity between East and West is often portrayed humorously in martial arts Western comedies. Martial arts Westerns can examine racial stereotyping and cultural acceptance through the lens of action-packed stories.
For whatever reason, the Western genre has always gone hand in hand with martial arts. Some of the greatest martial arts movie stars of all time have made films in the Wild West, including Jackie Chan and Jet Li. These stories tend to focus on the implicit conflict between the traditional and the new way, as exemplified by the East and the West. Western movies explore the exciting time when American society was pushing into a new uncharted frontier, and this makes it a perfect backdrop for martial arts stories which can have themes of loyalty, justice and moral strength.

Jackie Chan's most popular film franchises showcase his impressive acrobatics, stunt work, and martial arts mastery. Films like Rush Hour and Shanghai Noon pair Chan with unlikely allies, creating winning chemistry and memorable action-comedy. The Police Story series is an extensive and consistently high-quality franchise that blends comedy, drama, and breathtaking stunts.
One of the most celebrated martial arts stars in history, it's no wonder that Jackie Chan's impressive filmography includes several notable movie franchises. Getting his start as a child actor landing roles as early as the age of five, Jackie Chan's performance accolades slowly grew to include acrobatics, stunt work, and dazzling martial arts mastery. Miramax may have found its new leader. Jonathan Glickman, the former MGM executive, is in talks to join Miramax as its CEO, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
He would step in for former CEO Bill Block, who departed last year after a six-year run.
Glickman served as motion group president at MGM for nine years, where under his tenure, James Bond became a billion-dollar franchise. Western movies are known for their epic bar fights and saloon brawls, which often serve as moments of resolution for the cast of characters. The best bar fights in Westerns involve iconic imagery, quick-draw gunfights, the use of furniture and bottles, and one man fighting against many. Some notable Western movies with memorable bar fights include Blazing Saddles, Shanghai Noon, and Dodge City, each offering unique twists and subversions of genre tropes.
The Western genre is known for its epic bar fights and saloon brawls, but some movies stand out as having the best. Westerns frequently include shootouts and fights, but the bar fight is particularly memorable because of the iconic imagery of the Old West saloon. Call it the Karate Kid Cinematic Universe.
Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, both of whom starred in Karate Kid movies decades apart, are set to reprise their popular characters in Sony Pictures’ latest installment of the iconic coming-of-age martial arts franchise.
Jonathan Entwistle, best known for his well-regarded and award-winning teen television dramas I’m Not Okay with This and The End of the F***ing World, is directing the untitled feature that the studio is positioning as the fusing and continuing the mythology of the original franchise.
A global search for a Chinese actor to play the erstwhile title character launched today, with the Chan and Macchio kicking things off with an introductory video, seen below.
Rob Lieber, whose credits include Sony’s Peter Rabbit and Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good Very Bad Day, wrote the script. The plot line is hiding in the back of the dojo.

Western comedies provide a refreshing and hilarious take on the traditional Western genre, subverting expectations and adding comedic elements. The best Western comedies make fun of the genre and its stereotypical storylines, offering parody and self-reflexive humor. Films like Three Amigos!, Shanghai Noon, and Blazing Saddles rank among the best Western comedies, with dynamic casting and iconic performances.
While uncommon, Western comedies are among some of the most hilarious and enjoyable subgenres of film. The most successful Western comedies, ranked here from worst to best, all possess classic tropes of the Western genre while maintaining their focus on comedic elements such as slapstick humor and witty one-liners. The Western genre typically offers a canvas for thrilling action and intense violence with mostly dramatic themes and dark undertones. Western comedies subvert these expectations by introducing humor in the most unlikely of environments.

In the world of buddy cop comedies, the "Rush Hour" franchise remains a standout. The odd coupling of a reserved chief inspector from Hong Kong and a fast-talking LAPD officer sparked three action-packed, hilarious films popular the world over, amassing over $850 million at the global box office.
Across the three films, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) and Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) solve cases in Hong Kong and the U.S., even paying a brief visit to France, typically involving the Triads and government officials. And while the trilogy offers adrenaline-inducing action sequences, it's the comedic chemistry between the two actors that has endured.
When the first installment of "Rush Hour" debuted in 1998, North American audiences had just become acquainted with Chan following the success of "Rumble in the Bronx," while films like "Friday" and "The Fifth Element" highlighted Tucker as an emerging comedic voice. But it may not go as planned. The beloved comedy, which takes a mockumentary look at four vampires living in Staten Island, returns on July 14.

Who doesn't love Owen Wilson? In the late '90s, the blond star burst on the scene in Wes Anderson's "Bottle Rocket," snuck into big productions like "The Haunting" and "Armageddon," and then hit the big time when he teamed with Jackie Chan for the blockbuster "Shanghai-Noon" and its sequel. Since then, Wilson has expanded his portfolio with instant classics like "Zoolander," "Wedding Crashers," and "Midnight in Paris," and continues to show off his knack for lighthearted comedy in films such as "The French Dispatch," and the Marvel Disney+ series, "Loki."
Wilson even has his own animated franchise, Disney/Pixar's "Cars," in which he plays Lightning McQueen, a role he's returned to various times, including the California Adventure theme park ride. There's nothing he can't do, and his careful project selection typically ensures quality despite a small handful of duds during his nearly three-decade stay on the Hollywood A-list.

Jackie Chan contains multitudes.
Although many American filmgoers know Chan best for his Hollywood blockbusters and family-friendly fare, his profound impact on global cinema cannot be denied. A martial arts master who has battered his body for decades doing his own stunts in his signature comedic style, Chan has acted in over 150 movies, making him one of the wealthiest and most globally recognizable stars of all time.

Jackie Chan brings two major comedy influences to his 2003 movie Shanghai Knights, which are a bigger deal than they seem. Following on 2000's Shanghai Noon, Shanghai Knights sees Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson) join forces again to stop a plot against the throne in Victorian London. They are also joined in their mission by Chon's sister Chon Lin (Fann Wong), who Roy develops a romance with.
When it comes to Jackie Chan's Hollywood filmography, Shanghai Knights is one of his most beloved action-comedies, and one reason for that lies in just how much of Jackie Chan's Hong Kong style of comedy and action are prevalent in the film. Moreover, Chan also brings two key influences from his career into Shanghai Knights. Considering how infrequently they have been seen in the rest of his Hollywood career, that makes their use a much bigger deal in Shanghai Knights.

There are many great action-comedy movies like Rush Hour that find the perfect balance between laughs and thrills. Rush Hour stars Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker as a renowned Hong Kong inspector and a street-smart LAPD detective, respectively, who are reluctantly paired up to save the kidnapped daughter of a Chinese diplomat. It’s a rare example of an action-comedy that succeeds as both an action movie and a comedy. Casting Chan and Tucker in the lead roles made Rush Hour the best of both worlds: Chan provided unparalleled physicality in the fight scenes while Tucker provided spot-on joke deliveries. Together, they’re the perfect “buddy cop” duo.
With the visceral thrills and explosive spectacle of an action movie and the quippy banter and laugh-out-loud sight gags of a comedy, the potential entertainment value of action-comedies is endless. There are plenty of great movies like Rush Hour that strike that balance perfectly.

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Paint.Though he's appeared in popular movies like Wedding Crashers and Shanghai Noon, Owen Wilson has a shockingly bad Rotten Tomatoes score, and his new movie Paint has only dragged down his average. Once a darling of the early '00s, Wilson was often called upon to play laid-back, laissez-faire types in movies like You, Me, and Dupree and Zoolander, often partnering up with other comedic actors like Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, and Ben Stiller to balance their chaotic energy. In the '10s movies like Hall Pass, Marmaduke, and Drillbit Taylor made audiences wary of a persona that, after repeated exposure, had worn out its welcome.
In Paint, Wilson plays a Bob Ross-esque public access host who shows viewers all over Vermont how to paint nature scenes, encouraging them to explore their wildest artistic endeavors even if they don't have much in the way of talent.

Jackie Chan's 2002 action-comedy The Tuxedo represents the biggest missed opportunity of his long career. In The Tuxedo, cab driver Jimmy Tong (Chan) is hired as the chauffer of super spy Clark Devlin (Jason Isaacs), with the latter being badly injured in a car explosion. After Jimmy puts on Devlin's high-tech tuxedo, he becomes a fighting machine and teams up with Devlin's fellow spy Del Blaine (Jennifer Love Hewitt) to stop the evil plot of water magnate Diedrich Banning (Richie Coster).
The Tuxedo is frequently cited as one of Jackie Chan's worst movies, with the film representing the nadir of Jackie Chan's Hollywood films. What makes The Tuxedo's bad reputation even more lamentable is that it actually quite a good idea on paper. The concept of a Jackie Chan spy comedy like The Tuxedo could have been something particularly unique in his career.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is marking yet another chance for the West to get to know Donnie Yen, one of Asia’s top leading men. He has already been in several other major Hollywood franchises. He played the scene-stealing Force-sensitive blind master Chirrut Îmwe in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the lure for the Asian market role in XXX: Return of Xander Cage, and Commander Tung in the Disney live-action flop, Mulan. As befitting its status as one of the world’s biggest companies, every now and then Amazon likes to take a big swing with its Prime Video originals. With its list of new releases for April 2023, the streamer is taking one of its biggest swings yet.
Though it’s not quite as vast or expensive as fellow Prime Video series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, Citadel (premiering April 28) is a massive, massive undertaking. Starring Richard Madden and Priyanka Chopra Jonas, this spy series is described as “an expansive and groundbreaking global event comprising a mothership series and several local language satellite series.” This means that the Russo Brothers-produced project will eventually feature several spinoffs in multiple countries and languages around the world. Neat-o!
The only other major TV original of note this month is Dead Ringers, based on the 1988 David Cronenberg film of the same name,...

Jackie Chan utilized a great American sitcom gimmick as a tool to propel his career. Growing up in the Peking Opera Academy, Jackie Chan would begin his career in movies as a stuntman, even having his neck memorably broken by Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. With his back-to-back hits of Snake in the Eagle's Shadow and Drunken Master in 1978, Jackie Chan became Hong Kong's biggest star in the ensuing years and gradually made himself into a household name worldwide.
Despite some early struggles in breaking into the Hollywood industry, Chan eventually succeeded in doing so with the 1996 release of Rumble in the Bronx, followed by Jackie Chan's 1998 mega-hit Rush Hour. While Jackie Chan's style of action and unique brand of comedy has been key components of his winning formula to success, he has also utilized a few tried and true tricks to achieve stardom. One trick in particular that...
