Buddy cop movies are a staple of the action-comedy genre, pairing mismatched partners who must overcome their differences to chase down criminals. Director Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series is well-known for popularizing the buddy-cop genre, as Mel Gibson's reckless cop and Danny Glover's by-the-book officer made for plenty of mishaps and over-the-top action sequences. The 1980s/90s franchise went on to inspire a new wave of buddy cop films, including Rush Hour, Bad Boys, and Shanghai Noon.

More recently, the genre has evolved with hits like 21 Jump Street, The Other Guys, The Heat, and The Nice Guys. Among the modern entries in the genre, Ride Along carved out its own space thanks to the comedic energy of Kevin Hart, which paired hilariously with Ice Cube's stoic intensity. With a $154 million global box office haul, Ride Along became a surprise hit, setting the stage for its 2016 sequel.

Owen Wilson is taking to the golf course for the upcoming sports comedy Stick, which has received a first-look ahead of its June 4 release on Apple TV+. The streaming service is teeing the series up for a debut that will see three episodes drop at once, followed by one new episode every Wednesday until the 10th and final episode releases on July 23.

Dumbledore probably isn't the first character that action legend Jackie Chan would be compared to by moviegoers. However, the Harry Potter character is exactly who Karate Kid: Legends director Jonathan Entwistle believes Chan channeled while on the set of the forthcoming legacy sequel.

The martial arts western action comedy Shanghai Noon was a massive hit when it was released in 2000. While the film, starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, received a sequel, a third film in the franchise never got off the ground.

Speaking to Collider, Alfred Gough, who wrote the film with Miles Millar, revealed the current status of Shanghai Dawn. "We came very close. I think it was like 2017, 2018, we had a script and Jackie and Owen had verbally kind of committed," he explained. "Then, at a certain point, Jackie just decided he didn't want to do it. That's all I really know. There was a moment probably six or seven years ago where it looked like it was starting to come together. We weren't writing it, we were working with some younger writers, but we helped break the story, and they were writing it. So, that's where we are."

Shanghai Noon screenwriter Alfred Gough sheds light on the unmade third movie, what its story would have entailed, and why it ultimately fell apart. The 2000 action-Western starred Jackie Chan as a Chinese Imperial Guard who joins forces with Owen Wilson's outlaw in order to rescue a kidnapped princess. A sequel titled Shanghai Knights was released in 2003, taking the duo on a quest to recover a priceless artifact. A Shanghai Noon 3 was also announced in 2015, but few updates emerged after.

While Gough is currently known for his collaborations with Tim Burton on Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Wednesday, the writer reflected on his early collaboration with Miles Millar, his co-writer on Shanghai Noon, while talking to Collider. Gough recalled how far development on a third movie had progressed before things fell apart, admitting it had reached the script stage and had partial involvement from Chan and Wilson. He said:

Now, nearly a decade later, the Mike Judge-created series will return for the first half of the 20-episode Season 8 on July 24 with the original voice cast.

Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson are a hilarious buddy comedy duo in the Shanghai Noon movies, but franchise's intended third installment, Shanghai Dawn, has never gotten off the ground. Shanghai Noon debuted in 2000, with Jackie Chan's Chinese Imperial Guard Chon Wang venturing to America to rescue the kidnapped Princess Pei Pei. He also crosses paths with outlaw Roy O'Bannon (Owen Wilson), who joins forces with him on his mission.

Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon reunited for another wacky adventure in 2003's Shanghai Knights, traveling from the Old West to Victorian England with Chon's sister Chon Lin (Fann Wong). Shanghai Dawn was also announced and discussed at various points since the release of Shanghai Knights. However, despite Shanghai Noon and Shanghai Knights being highlights of Jackie Chan's Hollywood career, Shanghai Dawn has sadly yet to be realized.

April on Prime Video is stacked with returning favorites, the launch of one of Amazon’s biggest shows ever and a bevy of great movies to watch. The fifth and final season of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” launches on April 14, while Amazon will premiere the globe-trotting action-thriller series “Citadel” – starring Priyanka Chopra-Jonas and Richard Madden – on April 28. The show hails from “Avengers: Endgame” filmmaker Joe and Anthony Russo.
