            The house across the street

Monsieur Pic is a well -meaning well -respected man .He is a paragon of virtue ,he's the epitome of the good citizen .He goes as far as to denounce people who "forget" to declare their income to the Internal Revenue Service .He would never ,never ,take a job thanks to a bit of string-pulling .All the people around are his exact opposites :they seem to take advantage of a wealthy woman 's(Elvire Popesco)little help ,a distinguished madam who calls the shots all over the town.

The lady in question has bought the house across the street and Mr Pic soon learns it will be "a place where men meet women".And the plot thickens when Mr Pic's son is hired as a decorator by Madam. To make the matters worse, his daughter would like to "work" in the aforementioned luxury brothel, she naively thinks she 's going to meet important people to help her make her way of life.

To protect his offspring ,Mr Pic becomes the accountant of the house(under a pseudo :Monsieur Anatole) ; thanks to him ,business is flourishing and Madam praises her clerk to the skies. There's a lot of money to be made in the "Montespan " "Cleopatra" "Borgia" "Messaline" "Du Barry" and "La Vallière "(sic) boudoirs .Elvire Popesco has this wonderful line, still relevant today : "if they did not put dirty money in the banks, they would go bankrupt!" It's not always very funny ,but there are hilarious moments and the exhilarating immorality which reigns predates some of Christian-Jaque later works such as "Un Revenant" or "Le Repas Des Fauves"
