When the citizens of Hamelen refuse to pay the Ratcatcher for his services, he leads the town children, unwittingly accompanied by four adults, into a mountain and another world.

Stuck in the mysterious mountain, the Hamelaars find Gruizel Gruis and release him from his cage. They follow him through a magical door and find themselves in the land of Snak, where nobody cleans themselves or their homes. They receive a flying carpet from Queen Machteld de Morsige and are told to travel to Truuk de Tovenaar.

Together with sorcerers apprentice Prince Tor, the Hamelaars foil an attempt to steal Elven King Pipijn's disappearing-hat.

Truuk de Tovenaar has pointed the Hamelaars in the direction of Heks Slik but find her hovel empty. While searching for her, they meet Ambtenaar Ogterop and the villainous Guurt van Grasp.

Guurt van Grasp tries to steal Elven King Pipijn's Moon-mantle during the celebration of his 1002nd Moon-day.
