Join the Quest When This Classic 1999 Sci-Fi Comedy Lands Back on Streaming
Image
There are few parody movies that hit in the way that Galaxy Quest does and now the iconic Star Trek spoof is heading to Paramount+ this September! Never give up, never surrender! Galaxy Quest stars Tim Allenas Jason Nesmith, a William Shatner-esque star of a hit television series called Galaxy Quest. It is basically the Star Trek of this universe, which includes conventions all about the show that Nesmith hates going to. When fans try to talk to him about the show, he ignores them, and his fellow castmates are annoyed with his diva antics. But one set of "fans" changes the Galaxy Quest cast for the better.

Several...

Tim Allen ‘Never Felt Good’ About Getting Harold Ramis Fired From ‘Galaxy Quest’
Image
While the Santa Clause franchise is completely unhinged, and Jungle 2 Jungle has aged about as well as a carton of milk that had already expired before Jungle 2 Jungle came out, there’s at least one live-action Tim Allen movie that still holds up today: Galaxy Quest.

Sure, it’s basically a Star Trek-coded remake of Three Amigos, but Galaxy Quest is a genuinely funny movie. And it works in large part thanks to the cast, which includes the late great Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell. Plus, the dude from Home Improvement.

Allen plays the thinly-veiled Shatner surrogate Jason Nesmith, a washed-up actor famous for captaining the Nsea Protector on TV’s Galaxy Quest, often with no shirt on.

As we’ve mentioned before, the Dean Parisot-helmed comedy was originally supposed to be directed by Harold Ramis — until the studio tried to force him to work with Allen.

The Galaxy Quest TV show gets an encouraging update after the Paramount & Skydance merger.
Image
A new encouraging update has been provided about the Galaxy Quest TV show. Galaxy Quest was a 1999 movie that satirized Star Trek, its fans, and its cast. The movie was led by Tim Allen as Jason Nesmith, an obvious stand-in for William Shatner. It also featured Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, and Justin Long. A series has been in various stages of development for the past decade.

Galaxy Quest is a cult-classic movie that focuses on the cast of a fictional sci-fi show. They are captured by real aliens to save their race, as they believed the episodes to be historical documents. It's a loving tribute to Star Trek and its fandom. The movie is so reverent in its references that Galaxy Quest is considered one of the best Star Trek movies.

Per Deadline, following the Paramount and Skydance merger, there will be two separate TV studios.

'Galaxy Quest' Reboot Series Gets Finally Gets an Update
Image
Galaxy Questis a fan-favorite film that has captivated audiences since its release in 1999. The Star Trek parody film explores the cast of a sci-fi show as they navigate staying relevant in an evolving world, only for them to be contacted by real extra-terrestrials and take part in an unforgettable adventure. And 2 years ago, there was an announcement that a show based on the series was getting ready to hit Paramount+. It was originally set to be a series that followed the events of the film, but after the death of star Alan Rickman, the idea shifted. Now, it has been reported that the series is still on their radar.

The larger report was about the future of their streaming slate, which includes shows that were currently airing, in development, and the future of each project. With Galaxy Quest, the idea is that it will stay put where it was originally designed to go,...

How CBS Studios & Paramount TV Studios Are Divvying Up Streaming Series Slate: From ‘Reacher’ & ‘Cross’ To ‘Murderbot’ & ‘Clueless’
Image
Exclusive: The new, post-Skydance merger Paramount has two major TV studio units: the existing CBS Studios, led by David Stapf and overseen by Paramount Chair of TV Media George Cheeks, and the newly formed Paramount TV Studios, headed by former Skydance TV President Matt Thunell and overseen by Dana Goldberg, Co-Chair of Paramount Pictures and Chair of Paramount Television.

In an encouraging sign for their future interactions (and possible collaborations), on Day 1 of the two studios existing alongside each other when the Skydance acquisition closed August 7, they had already agreed on how to split the majority of overlapping existing series and projects in development.

As Deadline reported last week, CBS Studios’ primary focus will remain supplying the CBS broadcast network while still being able to do streaming series for Paramount+ and outside streamers when an opportunity presents itself, especially extensions of existing franchises like the NCIS: Tony & Ziva offshoot...

Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode 4 Ends Star Trek’s Worst Ratings Slump in Years
Image
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is back with season 3, and this week’s episode may just have brought it back to its glory. The latest episode of the show is titled A Space Adventure Hour and has been teased as a murder mystery on the lines of Knives Out and Clue. The episode has an IMDb rating of 7.8 and is the second-highest rated episode of the season.

Strange New Worlds came back to screens after a two-year gap. The season 2 finale ended with a cliffhanger, which was resolved in season 3’s premiere episode, Hegemony Part II, the highest-rated episode of the season so far. The show seemed to lose steam by its second episode, which focused on Spock and Chapel’s romance, and got a 6.8 rating (via IMDb). The show is back on its feet now.

Strange New Worlds season 3 episode 4 recap: A holodeck mystery leads to fun chaos
Image
If there’s one thing Star Trek fans know, it’s that if it’s a holodeck-centered episode, there’s going to be trouble. So was the case with “A Space Adventure Hour,” this week’s crazy Strange New Worlds episode that utilizes the holodeck for a story combining Knives Out with Galaxy Quest amid the usual Trek shenanigans, while also providing some surprisingly good character work amid the emergency.

From the start, we’re in for a wild ride. Rather than a standard opening, we see what looks like an ultra-cheesy retro-1960s sci-fi TV series where Kirk is the captain (Paul Wesley is doing his best cliche over the top William Shatner impression), with Ortegas, his first officer, and Chapel, a science officer, all in wildly bizarre outfits and hairdos.

They contact an alien who is clearly a puppet with very visible wires, which leads to a “battle...

Don Zimmerman Dies: Oscar-Nominated ‘Coming Home’ Editor Who Worked On ‘Being There,’ ‘Rocky’ Pics & Dozens More Was 81
Image
Don Zimmerman, a veteran film editor who scored an Oscar nom for Coming Home and worked on dozens of other movies including Being There, The Prince of Tides, Night at the Museum and two Rocky sequels, died July 24 of acute myeloid leukemia at his Studio City home. He was 81.

American Cinema Editors, the group that gave him a Career Achievement Award in 2023, confirmed the news.

Born in 1944 and nicknamed “Big D,” Zimmerman joined the Air Force during the Vietnam War and began working odd jobs — Western Electric, gas stations, insurance — after his discharge. A friend recommended he try being an assistant in show business, which led first to working as a sound editor.

“Then Jimmy, the assistant friend of mine, was working with Hal Ashby,” Zimmerman said in a 2023 interview with Ace’s Cinema Editor magazine. “Hal had just moved from editor to a director by Norman Jewison, and they needed a second assistant editor.

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’: Critics praise ‘charismatic leads’ and ‘a fresh start’ for the MCU
Image
The critics have spoken and agree that The Fantastic Four: First Steps lives up to the heroic team's name, with initial reviews on Tuesday celebrating the film for its character-driven storytelling and strong performances.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter praises Marvel for shifting its focus toward character development. “There’s a fresh willingness to prioritize character over the usual barrage of interchangeable CG action sequences that often overwhelm them, instead giving us relatable folks to invest in,” Rooney writes, highlighting the film’s commitment to emotional depth amid the spectacle.

Directed by Matt Shakman, the film is set in the early 1960s and stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Reed’s wife Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Sue’s brother Johnny, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. Julia Garner appears as the mysterious Silver Surfer known. Rooney notes, “The actors are so terrific and their chemistry...

‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Review: Pedro Pascal and Vanessa Kirby Lead Appealing New Crew to Break Marvel Property’s Six-Decade Curse
Image
The pleasing back-to-basics feel in The Fantastic Four: First Steps suggests Marvel has learned valuable lessons from its recent box office underperformers. There’s a fresh willingness to prioritize character over the usual barrage of interchangeable CG action sequences that often overwhelm them, instead giving us relatable folks to invest in. Equally important is the decision to make this a legitimate stand-alone requiring no homework. The expectation that audiences would have intimate knowledge of a sprawling multiverse covered in a glut of features and TV series no doubt contributed to the perception of genre fatigue.

A quote on the end credits from Jack Kirby, who created the comic book series with Stan Lee in 1961, reads: “If you look at my characters, you will find me. No matter what kind of character you create or assume, a little of yourself must remain there.” Director Matt Shakman and screenwriters Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson,...

The 15 Best Star Trek Parodies And Spoofs Of All Time
Image
When "Star Trek" first hit the airwaves in 1966, no one could predict just how popular the budding franchise would become. It would boldly go where few TV shows have gone before, leading to spinoffs, movies, and all sorts of collectible paraphernalia. It's pretty impressive, especially since the original "Star Trek" series was cancelled after just three seasons due to low ratings. However, it tapped into something in the zeitgeist and couldn't stay down for long, making it a prime target for a litany of parodies.

Between William Shatner's hammy acting style for Captain Kirk and so many fun, unique alien species, there's plenty for jokesters to poke fun at. And of course, the best spoofs are those where it's clear the creators have a deep respect for all "Star Trek" has done. Even if you wouldn't consider yourself a hardcore Trekkie, you'll probably find something to enjoy in these movies,...

Image
Kyle MacLachlan and Justin Long have joined Penn Badgley and Meghann Fahy in You Deserve Each Other, an Amazon MGM romantic comedy based on the novel by Sarah Hogle.

The feature, budgeted in the mid-$20 million range, is in production in New York with Marc Silverstein and Abby Kohn, the writers who have been behind rom-com hits Never Been Kissed and He’s Just Not That Into You, directing.

Also joining the call sheet are Ana Gasteyer, Timothy Busfield, Delaney Rowe, Lisa Gilroy and Alyssa Limperis. Fifth Season is one of the entities producing the feature.

Described as a lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers rom-com, You Deserve Each Other follows Naomi and Nick, a couple who are about to get married and live happily ever after except for one thing: They’ve fallen completely out of love. With the wedding rapidly approaching and its pressure mounting, they both resolve to secretly push the other into...

Rachel Nichols, Britt Robertson, Bruce Davison to Star in Psychological Horror Film ‘Don’t Look Inside’
Image
Rachel Nichols (P2), Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland), Missi Pyle (Galaxy Quest), Nelson Lee (Civil War), and Bruce Davison (X-Men) will star in Don’t Look Inside, Deadline reports.

The psychological horror film is set to shoot this fall in Minnesota with writer-director Mike Lé Han (Hellraiser: Origins) at the helm.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the movie is described as an “emotionally charged narrative with chilling, franchise-ready mythology” in the vein of Talk to Me and Smile.

“This cast is extraordinary,” said Lé Han. “Their emotional range and commitment to the story gives this film the gravity and intensity it demands. We couldn’t imagine making this film with anyone else.”

Chaos Theory Pictures is producing alongside Lé Han, Todd Slater via his Convoke Media banner, and Brandon Franco at Three Olives Productions.

They hope to launch a franchise with Don’t Look Inside, with a sequel already outlined.

Elio Review: Pixar's Latest Stirs Heart and Senses in Equal Measure
Image
For moviegoers of a certain vintage, Elio, Pixar’s latest addition to its stellar-level animated output, will feel comfortably, nostalgically familiar. Centering as it does on a starry-eyed preteen dreamer, Elio pays respectful homage to family-oriented 70s and 80s Amblin or Amblin-inspired science-fiction films, among them Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, The Last Starfighter, Explorers, and Flight of the Navigator. Throw in semi-explicit nods to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Galaxy Quest, and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, not to mention Carl Sagan’s groundbreaking PBS miniseries, Cosmos, and the wholesomely endearing result will all but bring a tear to the eye and a tug of the heart for nostalgists of a certain age and inclination. Elio, however, is more...

‘Elio’ Review: Pixar’s Sci-Fi Spectacular Gets Lost In Space
Image
The latest animation from Pixar has been in the pipe for quite some time, and while that’s not so strange for such a labor-intensive production, it’s telling that the finished version bears little resemblance, story-wise, to the film promised by the trailer released in 2023. But even without that knowledge, there’s definitely something off here; despite a cast-iron central premise — a desperately lonely young boy seeks a close encounter of the third kind — Elio never quite figures out what to do with it. It’s pretty obvious that the original intention was to celebrate the outsider and make a point about finding one’s tribe, but somewhere along the line that all got lost, and we’re left with spectacular film about the vastness of infinity that ends up an Earthbound parable about family ties.

When we first meet him, 11-year-old Elio Solis (Yonas Kibreab) is recently orphaned...

A Galaxy Quest TV show is "being written"
Mark Johnson
It is hard to get a TV show made. Even being a successful producer with lots of popular credits to your name doesn't guarantee you can pull it off. Take Mark Johnson, a producer who over the years has worked on movies and TV shows like Good Morning, Vietnam; Rain Man; The Notebook, Breaking Bad, the Interview With The Vampire show on AMC and The Chronicles of Narnia movies from the 2000s.

Johnson also worked on the 1999 movie Galaxy Quest, a very funny send-up of the Star Trek franchise, where actors from a TV show that isn't Star Trek but is clearly meant to be Star Trek are mistaken for real adventures by space aliens and drafted into their ongoing intergalactic war. Folks have been trying to turn Galaxy Quest into a TV series for a very long time, but so far without luck. Johnson is also pushing to create...

'Galaxy Quest' Producer Confirms Series Script Is "Being Written"
Image
Original Galaxy Quest producer Mark Johnson has indicated that when it comes to the long-awaited TV series based on the cult classic 1999 sci-fi comedy, fans should never give up, never surrender! It turns out that Grabthar's hammer has not come down on the project yet, after years of being in development, which means there is still a glimmer of hope that the courageous crew of the Nsea Protector could bring another space adventure to our screens in the future, and we should remain on the lookout for further signs of life.

Johnson has several projects in the works, including TV adaptations of Galaxy Quest and The Holdovers, which he tells Deadline "are being written, so we'll see." It may not be the most Earth-shattering update, especially since he didn't reveal how far along they are with the script and this is one of many iterations that have been in development...

Pixar’s “Elio” Sets June 20 Liftoff With New Directors at the Controls
Steve Bloom, Brad Garrett, Elio, Shirley Henderson, Harley Jessup, Zoe Saldaña, Anna Wolitzky, Yonas Kibreab, Remy Edgerly, Mary Alice Drumm, Rob Simonsen, Adrian Molina, Jameela Jamil, Madeline Sharafian, and Domee Shi in Elio (2025)
Pixar’s next feature, “Elio,” is set to reach U.S. theaters on June 20, marking the studio’s first original release since “Turning Red.” The coming-of-age space tale is now steered by Domee Shi and Madeline Sharafian, who took the helm after Adrian Molina shifted to development on “Coco 2” last year.

The story follows 11-year-old Elio Solis, abducted to a sprawling “Communiverse” and mistakenly declared Earth’s ambassador, an arc the filmmakers use to examine childhood isolation and the need for connection. Shi said she “found her way in” once she grasped the boy’s longing to belong, while Sharafian noted that the team consulted psychologists specializing in children’s loneliness to ground the emotions.

Voice talent includes Yonas Kibreab, Zoe Saldaña, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil and Shirley Henderson. A new trailer released May 28 blends Pixar spectacle with a playful nod to a viral “gorilla fight” meme and has...

Galaxy Quest TV Series Gets Encouraging Update From Producer
Image
Fans get a promising update about the long-awaited Galaxy Questtelevision series.

Per Deadline, producer Mark Johnson, who has his name attached to beloved features ranging from Good Morning, Vietnam to Rain Man to The Notebook, opened up about two hotly-anticipated projects. Regarding the possibility of both a Galaxy Quest and The Holdovers series, Johnson stated simply that "Both are being written," before adding, "So we'll see."

Back in 2024, Sam Rockwell noted that the film's surviving cast would almost assuredly be part of such a project. "It was a really lucky thing, that film. If there was a sequel to Galaxy Quest, we would be on it. We talked about it, maybe like a limited series." Rockwell added, "Simon Pegg talked about helping with it, actually." These statements came almost a year after the confirmation that Paramount+ and Paramount Television had signed Mark Johnson on to produce, all while actively searching...

Greta Gerwig’s ‘Narnia’ Movie Is Going to Be “Radically Different” From Previous Films
Image
After Barbie’s unprecedented success, Greta Gerwig is set to swing the wardrobe wide open with her adaptation of The Chronicles of Narnia. A slew of big names has been confirmed with a movie along with a planned wide IMAX release by Netflix, the studio behind the project. While fans can theorize as much as they want about which books are being adapted, we’ll know for sure when the film finally arrives. Meanwhile, producer Mark Johnson, who is behind not only Narnia movies but also features like Good Morning, Vietnam, Galaxy Quest, The Holdovers and more, finally gave fans a “fascinating” tease about the upcoming project.

“I’m fascinated. First of all, I’m a gigantic fan of hers, so I can’t wait to see it,” Johnson said in a new interview with Deadline. Though the producer remained tightlipped about the project. Johnson is among the producers that brought the original trilogy,...

‘The Chronicles Of Narnia’ Producer Mark Johnson On Greta Gerwig Tackling Fantasy Title; ‘Galaxy Quest’ & ‘The Holdovers’ Series Adaptations
Image
Over his more than four decades as a producer, Mark Johnson has done about 60 movies, including The Chronicles Of Narnia fantasy trilogy; Best Picture Oscar winner Rain Man; Bugsy; Good Morning, Vietnam; Galaxy Quest; The Holdovers; and romantic classic The Notebook. Surprisingly, none have been turned into a TV series yet, even as Johnson has established a footprint in television with the Emmy-winning Breaking Bad and most recently the Anne Rice universe on AMC.

That may finally change. During an interview with Deadline tied to Johnson’s first-look deal extension at AMC, he provided an update on the long-in-the-works TV series based on the cult classic 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest. There had been multiple incarnations at the now-defunct Paramount TV Studios over the past decade, the most recent set up at Paramount+ in 2023.

Johnson addressed that project, now set up at CBS Studios, which absorbed sibling Paramount TV Studios, as...

Pixar's Elio Footage Reaction: Amblin And Galaxy Quest Combine For A Delightful Sci-Fi Adventure
Image
Pixar's new movie "Elio" is taking audiences and the movie's titular character to space for an adventure the likes of which the animation studio has never embarked upon before. Sure, we've been to space in the beloved "Wall-e," and we've even hit lightspeed with a certain space ranger in the less celebrated "Lightyear," but "Elio" is taking us on an adventure that is completely removed from the comforts of life on Earth, bringing us into a vibrant otherworldly space station known as the Communiverse.

In early May, /Film was invited to Pixar Animation's campus in Emeryville, California to watch new footage from "Elio" and learn about the making of their latest film. Directors Domee Shi ("Turning Red") and Madeline Sharafian (story lead on "Turning Red" and "Coco") revealed a selection of scenes totaling almost 25 minutes of footage that gave us an idea of the story they were trying to tell,...

The Real Reason Why ‘Firefly’ Was Canceled Just After Season 1
Image
Before it became a cult favorite, Firefly became one of the greatest “what could’ve been.” The show was trying to tell stories from a galaxy far, far away before it got brutally axed. Created by Joss Whedon, Firefly premiered in 2002 and introduced viewers to the ragtag crew of the spaceship Serenity, navigating life on the fringes of a dystopian future. It had that gritty western-in-space vibe, blending shootouts with philosophical musings while flying under mainstream attention’s radar.

The cast was stacked as well. From Nathan Fillion as the charming and morally gray Captain Mal Reynolds, Gina Torres as the badass second-in-command Zoe, Alan Tudyk as the eccentric pilot Wash, to Summer Glau as the mysterious, psychically gifted River Tam, just to name a few.

So why did a show with solid acting, clever worldbuilding, and a unique tone get axed after just one season? Well… let’s just...

‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Epilogue Was Supposed to Be Much Longer, But Paramount Rejected the Idea
Image
Star Trek: Discovery was a major show. The series, which ran from 2017 to 2024, was a proper hit, and it generally received a lot of praise from both the fans and the critics. After 65 episodes and five seasons, the series ended on May 30, 2024.

But, the cancellation of the series came as a bit of a surprise for everyone; not that it was completely unexpected, but the cast and crew thought that they would have more space and time to conclude the story in a proper way.

Well, that did not happen. As was recently revealed, Paramount rejected a much bigger idea that the cast and crew had in mind, and that is how we got the 12-minute epilogue that concluded the series.

Related: Idw Is Launching Three New Star Trek Limited Comic Series Later This Year

As you probably remember, the show ended with a 12-minute epilogue that wrapped up the 65-episode storyline.

Why Kaitlyn Dever's Eve Baxter Left Last Man Standing
Image
2011 was a huge year for Kaitlyn Dever. Though she was only 14 at the time, the up-and-coming actor booked small parts in two high profile movies ("Bad Teacher" and Clint Eastwood's "J. Edgar"), popped as tough Kentucky cookie Loretta McCready in the magnificent second season of "Justified," and joined the main cast of Tim Allen's new sitcom "Last Man Standing." That's quite a range of shows and films, and this ensured Dever would get to flaunt her burgeoning talent all the way across the demographic spectrum.

For families with young viewers, "Last Man Standing" was the kind of relentlessly inoffensive sitcom they could watch together without worrying there'd be a ribald gag or profanity. Say what you will about Allen (and I'm quite certain the cocaine dealers he snitched on in 1978 to avoid serving a length prison sentence have said plenty about him), he knows what his audience expects from him,...

Did Pixar change 'Elio's' plotline? (Trailer reveals details)
Image
The new trailer for Elio promises some fantastic fun for an intergalactic Pixar outing! However, it also hints the film may have undergone a major change in production!

It's been a tricky time for Pixar. The animation studio suffered during the Covid-19 pandemic, with Soul, Luca, and Turning Red all banished to Disney+ while Lightyear became the company's biggest flop.

They turned it around, with Elemental overcoming a poor opening to become a box office success and Inside Out 2 being a monster hit. Elio was going to be arriving in March of 2024, only to be bumped to this summer.

The first teaser, released in 2023, had the apparent setup of an alien race contacting Earth and demanding, "Give us your leader." Thanks to a telephone snafu, the aliens mistake young Elio (Yonas Kibreab) for Earth's leader and whisk him into space, where Elio has to "defend" humanity to the universe.

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 4 Review: Harvey Specter Elevates the Spinoff
Image
Quick LinksHarvey Specter's Suits LA Return Is Worth Watching ForSuits LA Season 1, Episode 4 Might Just Have Changed Suits CanonSuits LA Episode 4 Finds a Breakout Moment for Stuart Lane

The following contains major spoilers from Suits LA Season 1, Episode 4, "Batman Returns," which debuted Sunday, March 16 on NBC.

Suits LA Season 1, Episode 4, "Batman Returns" is the episode viewers have been waiting for, because it involves the return of Harvey Specter. In that sense, the episode is worthwhile, because Gabriel Macht's presence immediately takes the NBC spinoff up a notch, and not just because Harvey is a legacy character. In other ways, this already much-publicized event creates more food for thought as the show's storylines are starting to come together.

"Batman Returns" centers around Ted Black and Erica Rollins having to face a new legal wrinkle in the Lester Thompson case: Lester's movie studio wants to bury his film, given all...

'Suits LA' Episode 4 Recap: Harvey's Back in Business
Image
Suits LA finally delivered on what fans have been waiting for, as Gabriel Macht made an appearance as Harvey Specter in the episode "Batman Returns." The appearance connects Suits LA to the original series, Suits, and it's a reason for fans to be excited. Unfortunately, it's one of the only reasons for fans to get excited right now, as "Batman Returns" is a mostly uneventful episode.

The Moment Everyone's Been Waiting For: Harvey Specter's Return

The flashbacks in "Batman Returns" start with Ted Black visiting the diner where his brother, Eddie, works. While there, Pellegrini (the mob boss Ted is trying to take down) approaches Ted, which makes the lawyer worry about his brother's safety. Later, Ted is pitching for softball, and he's off his game. The shortstop on his team approaches the mound, and it's Harvey.

Ted tells Harvey about his ordeal with Pellegrini, so after the game, Ted,...

'The Only Thing I Wish About It...': Star Trek: Tng Stars Reveal Their Reactions to Galaxy Quest
Image
More than a quarter of a century after its release, Galaxy Questremains among the gold standards in space sci-fi parody films. Starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, and Sigourney Weaver, the movie that follows the cast of a 1970s space TV show who become heroes of the galaxy, is by some considered a bit of a love letter to the Star Trekfranchise.

During a panel at the Indiana Comic Convention, Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked some Star Trek: The Next Generation alums what they thought of 1999’s Galaxy Quest.

“It’s perfect. It perfectly captures the essence (of Star Trek) with love and humor and intelligence…it’s so well-crafted,” said Denise Crosby, who played Lieutenant Tasha Yar in the first season of Tng and the Season 3 episode, “Yesterday’s Enterprise.”

“Like they Read Our Mail”

"It's Almost Like They Read Our Mail": 'Star Trek: The Next Generation's Cast Reacts to Seeing ‘Galaxy Quest’ [Exclusive]
Image
Galaxy Quest and The Orville are hard-hitting spoofs of Star Trek, but there are certainly no hard feelings from the cast of Gene Roddenberry's franchise. In fact, some of them are even big fans of the two. During Indiana Comic Convention's Star Trek: The Next Generation panel, Collider's Steve Weintraub broached the topic with Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, and Denise Crosby. He asked the trio what the sentiment was at the time when Galaxy Quest came out in 1999, a few years after The Next Generation had come to an end. Crosby was the first to share her thoughts: "It's perfect. It perfectly captures the essence [of Star Trek] with love and humor and intelligence...it's so well-crafted."...

One Of 2023's Best Fantasy Movies Is Finally Finding An Audience On Netflix
Image
"Dungeons & Dragons" is a tricky fantasy brand. Just about everyone knows what it is, and lots of people are quite sure that a role-playing game that requires loads of imagination and a considerable time commitment is not for them -- although, as "Freaks and Geeks" taught us, these folks who think they're anti-d&d are only one campaign away from becoming total converts. This overwhelmingly negative perception some people hold of D&d is likely a big reason why movies based on the game have failed to take off. There's also the fact that the first attempt, 2000's "Dungeons & Dragons," was an unwatchable heap of crap helmed by the shockingly untalented Courtney Solomon. That didn't help at all.

2023's "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" was a different matter entirely. Directed by Jonathan Goldstein and "Freaks and Geeks" alum John Francis Daley, the film boasted a crackerjack cast that included Chris Pine,...

Tim Allen Played His Only Villain in 'Redbelt'
Image
Tim Allen playing the bad guy is not what we've come to expect. For decades, Allen embodied the quintessential suburban dad while grunting through home improvement mishaps on television. He also voiced one of the most recognizable animated characters ever known and loved, Buzz Lightyear. But there was a moment in Allen's career when he flipped the script for 2008's mixed martial arts (Mma) movieRedbelt, written and directed by David Mamet, a clever wordsmith known for Glengarry Glen Ross, American Buffalo, and other acclaimed plays and films.

Typically, Allen portrays the warm protagonist, slightly flawed but good-natured. That's not to say he hasn't played characters with more of an edge in a few works, such as Jason Nesmith in Galaxy Quest and the profane losers Eliot Arnold in Big Trouble and Larry Roth in El Camino Christmas. But Redbelt is the only time he played a conniving villain. Allen's cynical,...

Black Mirror is doing another Star Trek-inspired story for their next season
Image
We talk about Star Trek-inspired properties a lot over on our site. We mention The Orville, Galaxy Quest, and other Star Trek-themed, or inspired shows. Yet, one that we don't talk about a lot is the horror-anthology series, Black Mirror.

A modern-day Twilight Zone, Black Mirror does all the same things that the iconic Twilight Zone used to do, just with more emphasis on technology than the 1960s horror series used to. The cultural examinations, the lessons, and the concepts are pretty universal across both shows and Black Mirror mostly does an excellent job of filling in where Twilight Zone left off.

Despite Black Mirror not being anywhere close to a Star Trek clone on its own, season four brought forth an episode that caught many Star Trek fans by surprise. The episode was called USS Callister, and it featured Jesse Plemons as the standard, James Kirk-stand in character.

“Suits LA” has added three new guest stars.

Variety has learned exclusively that Patton Oswalt, Brian Baumgartner, and Enrico Colantoni are all set to appear in the first season of the NBC legal drama. All three will play a version of themselves.

The trio join previously announced guest stars like Maggie Grace, Matt Letscher, Sofia Pernas, and Carson A. Egan. A Galaxy Quest show could still work even without the original cast
Image
Galaxy Quest remains one of the best Star Trek-inspired parodies out there. It's funny, witty, touches on reality a lot, and does a great job of depicting life in the Star Trek fandom without being mean-spirited or unkind. The acting is fantastic, the story is tight and it's largely everything you'd ever want from a movie. Star Trek or otherwise.

Yet, after 25 years, we've gotten nothing. We've heard rumors of a new Galaxy Quest-themed show, but with the passing of Alan Rickman and Tim Allen now leading a hit new sitcom with Kat Dennings, it looks like a revival, sequel or spinoff may not happen.

But it should. And it could. Galaxy Quest started off as a Star Trek parody, but with the arrival of shows like The Orville, it's clear that Star Trek fans want more than just Star Trek. At the very least, they want more Star Trek,...

The Best Sci-Fi Movie From Each Year Of The 1990s
Image
The 1990s produced plenty of brilliant sci-fi hits, with a mix of comedies, spectacular blockbusters and all-out action classics. Many of the best sci-fi movies of the 1990s have set the standard for the genre moving into the 21st century, and they have also established wider trends in the movie industry, since sci-fi blockbusters often dominated box office rankings. Modern sci-fi blockbusters started to take shape in the '90s.

While the '90s were a great decade for sci-fi movies overall, some years were better than others. 1999 produced The Matrix, The Iron Giant and Galaxy Quest, for example, as well as the rebirth of the Star Wars franchise. By contrast, 1992 didn't deliver many sci-fi movies that have withstood the test of time. Breaking down sci-fi year-by-year presents an interesting snapshot of how the genre developed in the 1990s.

Shifting Gears Cast & Character Guide
Image
Shifting Gears has aired its series premiere, and the cast is filled with familiar faces. ABC’s newest sitcom marks Tim Allen’s return to network television, but many supporting characters are played by actors who have worked with Allen before. Others have experience with co-star Kat Dennings in her varied projects, while a select few are breaking into the world of sitcoms with Shifting Gears. The basic story of Tim Allen’s Shifting Gears follows an estranged father (Allen’s Matt) and daughter (Dennings’ Riley) who reconnect when the daughter moves home with her two children amidst a divorce.

While the pilot episode of Shifting Gears earned negative reviews, the show’s impressive array of actors garnered a sizable following. The classic sitcom format of Shifting Gears leaves the door open for endless additional guest stars and cameos as the series progresses, but the main and recurring cast is already filled with heavy hitters.

Tim Allen Reveals if 'Home Improvement' Alum Jonathan Taylor Thomas Will Make 'Shifting Gears' Cameo
Image
Could there be an on-screen reunion for Home Improvement father and son duo Tim Allen and Jonathan Taylor Thomas in the works? Don't count it out. Allen, whose latest sitcom, Shifting Gears, premiered on January 8, said "everything is a possibility" when speaking to US Weekly about potentially sharing the screen with Thomas again for his latest project. Allen and Thomas famously co-starred on Home Improvement for 8 seasons from 1991 to 1999. The two reunited again in 2013 for the Allen led-Last Man Standing, with Thomas appearing in four episodes (from 2013 to 2015) and directing three.

"Everything is a possibility. He just came back [to the last episode we filmed]. He showed up on the set. He's literally my kid. I raised that kid for eight years on Home Improvement. All of these are my kids, and I'm kind of sick about this."

Allen's last statement seems to reference his Home Improvement co-star, Zachery Ty Bryan, who portrayed oldest sibling, Brad.
