Cappelani Forces The Adoption Of Features

Widower Henri Etievant loves widow Germaine Dermoz. Everyone disapproves except daughter, Raymonde Dupre. They get married, and his mother moves out, and his son enlists in the army to get away.

Director Albert Capellani is rightly admired for his ability to push out longer and longer movies, starting in the days when one reel was long. My issues with his work is that he never seemed to know what edit out, and when he did cut something, it always seems to have been the visual and visceral while retaining the intellectual components that don't really show up on the screen. Here in this movie drawn from a play, he decided to concentrate on the close-up performances. I can only follow what is going on in their heads because the titles precede the action. While there are a couple of telling moving shots, and even one inset shot that states more clearly the thoughts of the person in the scene, I thought it slow for a 36-minute feature.
