CNN Bets More of Kaitlan Collins’ White House News Hustle Can Power ‘The Source’
Image
By day, CNN’s Kaitlan Collins wears out shoe leather at the White House, trying to get the latest details on any number of eyebrow-raising policies coming out of the Trump administration. By night, she holds forth from a shiny Washington studio, far from the fray.

CNN hopes to inject a little of the reporter’s daytime routine into her nighttime one.

Collins is expected to leave her studio perch and host her 9 p.m. program, “The Source,” from the Warner Bros. Discovery-backed outlet’s Washington, D.C., newsroom, a move that could take place as soon as Tuesday evening. The hope is that the change in setting will give viewers a more kinetic presentation that reminds them of Collins’ unique place at the network — it is rare for someone assigned to a busy news beat, in this case that of chief White House correspondent, to also have responsibility...

Image
CNN International and CNN Fast are now available to stream on Vidaa. (Courtesy image)

CNN finished April with solid performance across its cable, digital, and streaming platforms, according to data from Nielsen Media Research, Comscore and other sources.

For the fourth consecutive month, CNN ranked in the top five most-watched cable networks in total day among viewers aged 2 and up (P2+), placing fourth, and ranked eighth among viewers aged 25 to 54 (P25-54). In weekday prime-time, CNN grew its P25-54 audience by 8 percent year-over-year, rising from 113,000 to 122,000 viewers. (Fox News continued to dominate across all cable networks during the month.)

Among total viewers, CNN secured a top 10 spot in prime-time (seventh overall) for the fourth straight month. Key programs like “Erin Burnett OutFront,” “NewsNight with Abby Phillip,” and “Laura Coates Live” saw audience growth in the P25-54 demographic. NewsNight with Abby Phillip stood out as CNN’s highest-rated show...

Kirsty Wark To Receive BAFTA Fellowship: Broadcaster & Journalist Will Be Awarded The British Academy’s Top Honor
Image
Scottish broadcaster and journalist Kirsty Wark will receive this year’s BAFTA Fellowship, the British Academy’s top accolade.

The BAFTA Fellowship is given in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the industry. Wark will join other journalists to receive the honor including Jon Snow and Kate Adie.

She presented the BBC’s landmark news show Newsnight for 30 years, holding politicians and public figures to account. Making her reputation as a journalist and producer on BBC Scotland, Wark was one of the first television journalists to arrive on the scene when Pan Am Flight 103 was blown up in the skies above Lockerbie in 1988. She famously locked horns with British Pm Margaret Thatcher in 1990, in one of several headline-making interviews that propelled her into the spotlight.

She has also presented BBC arts programs The Late Show and The Review Show. Notable interviews in the cultural space include with Madonna, Harold Pinter,...

Prince Andrew Joined King Charles For Easter Outing Prince William and Kate Skipped!
Image
Prince Andrew and his family joined King Charles for Easter church outing on April 20, despite the former no longer being a working royal. Here’s the reason why he can still join the Royal Family on these rare outings.

Reason Prince Andrew Joined King Charles For Easter Outing Explained

Prince William and Princess Kate were Mia during this year’s Easter church outing, even though they’d returned from their little family trip abroad. Reports state that they opted to enjoy a quiet Easter away from the spotlight.

This would mark the second time in a row that they’ve missed the church gathering. In 2024, they missed the Sunday service due to Kate’s chemotherapy treatments.

Some say the Waleses’ decision to skip the outing and celebrate privately hints at a growing fracture between them and King Charles, while others see it as the couple’s desire for privacy.

However,...

CNN Abby Phillip’s Show Panelists Scott Jennings & Tiffany Cross Hurl Personal Insults in Heated Debate
Image
CNNs NewsNight got tense on Wednesday night (April 9) after a debate between Scott Jennings and ex-MSNBC host Tiffany Cross devolved into personal insults. The show, hosted by Abby Phillip, saw resident conservative panelist Jennings discussing the drama surrounding President Donald Trump‘s trade tariffs, most of which he paused for 90 days on Wednesday amid a plummeting stock market. After a fellow panelist brought up how Trump’s tariffs had offended allies, just as he did when threatening to buy Greenland, Cross referred to this as a “colonizer’s attitude.” “It’s a colonizer’s attitude to say, I like it, I’m just gonna steal it,'” Cross said. Jennings pushed back on this, responding, “Steal what?” “Land, land,” Cross replied. “You cannot just go and say, ‘I like it, it’s mine now.’ It doesn’t work that way. That is what they’re trying to do. And in this new world order…...

Fresh Claims About Prince Andrew And His Connection To Chinese Spy As King Charles Is Dragged Into Row
Image
More about Prince Andrew and his connection to an alleged Chinese spy, Yang Tengbo, was detailed in documents released in court earlier today.

Senior Aide To Prince Andrew Claimed The King Had Two Meetings With Tengbo

King Charles was dragged into the row after documents claimed he had been personally briefed about an investment fund involving a spy.

Andrew’s senior aide, Dominic Hampshire, who was prohibited from Britain on national security grounds, claimed the King had two meetings with Tengbo and Andrew between December 2023 and May last year.

Hampshire, Andrew, and the King mulled over what the disgraced prince could do after he was rejected from other business opportunities due to his involvement with known sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Yang was involved in a renewable energy project called the Eurasia Fund, which never came to fruition. There is no evidence that Charles knew of any security concerns pertaining to the alleged agent.

MSNBC’s New Weekend Primetime Quartet Has Already Started a Conversation
Image
MSNBC’s new Saturday and Sunday primetime panel, “The Weekend,” won’t kick off until later this month, but the show’s four hosts just got their first chance to chew over their plans.

At first glance, Ayman Mohyeldin, Elise Jordan, Catherine Rampell and Antonia Hylton don’t seem to have too much in common. Each has a distinctive background that is unlike the others. Hylton gained traction working for upstart news outlets including Mic and Vice.com before joining NBCUniversal. Rampell has made a name for herself not only for economic analysis at The Washington Post but also as a frequent talk-show contributor to everything from CNN’s “News Night” to HBO’s “Real Time.” Mohyeldin first began to emerge at NBC News delivering reports last decade from the Middle East. And Jordan has worked for Senator Rand Paul and former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

The British TV Industry Is In Such Crisis, ‘Wolf Hall’ Director Says, That ITV and BBC Couldn’t Afford ‘Adolescence’
Image
From “Baby Reindeer” to “Adolescence,” Netflix has staked a claim when it comes to sourcing prestige British TV with global appeal and “Wolf Hall” director Peter Kosminsky believes this to be a huge problem. Speaking during a recent interview with BBC Two’s Newsnight, the 45-year industry veteran detailed what he described as an “existential crisis” facing Britain’s public broadcasting.

Kosminsky explained that American streaming companies have made costs so high that BBC, ITV, Channel 4, and Channel 5 “can’t afford to make dramas like ‘Wolf Hall’ anymore.” Instead, all the money that should be distributed on British programming is going to shows that have more global appeal, “Adolescence” being one example.

“I think the BBC or ITV would wish to make ‘Adolescence,’ but let’s be absolutely clear,” Kosminsky said, “there is no way they could make it at the moment.”

Ana Navarro & Kevin O’Leary Clash on CNN Over Rosie O’Donnell’s Decision to Quit US
Image
CNN NewsNight panelist Ana Navarro fired back at Kevin O’Leary on Wednesday night (March 12) after the Shark Tank star said nobody cares about the political views of Rosie O’Donnell. The confrontation came after O’Donnell shared a TikTok video on Wednesday, where she revealed she and her 12-year-old daughter had moved from the United States to Ireland for a “better life.” O’Donnell, now living in Dublin with her youngest daughter Dakota (also known as Clay), said, “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know,” adding that she and Clay “just felt like we needed to take care of ourselves and make some hard decisions and follow through” and won’t consider returning to the U.S. until “all citizens have equal rights.” Responding to O’Donnell’s post on Wednesday’s NewsNight, O...

MSNBC is, like other cable-news mainstays, giving roundtable shows a harder spin.

Rahm Emanuel Joins CNN as Political Commentator
Image
Look out, Scott Jennings!

CNN said it hired Rahm Emanuel, the former Obama advisor and Chicago mayor, as a senior commentator on political and global affairs. Emanuel most recently served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan.

His hire comes as CNN has tried to lure conservative and center-right viewers by enlisting the aforementioned Jennings, a former Bush advisor whose presence on the network has increased in recent weeks. Jennings appears frequently in Washington political panels and on the primetime show “NewsNight,” and even recently made a foray into CNN’s more traditional news programming. His support for the policies of the Trump administration has brought him directly into on-air conflict with several CNN anchors, who often accuse him of grandstanding.

Emanuel could serve to balance the scales. A former chief of staff in the Obama White House, Emanuel is known for having a blunt demeanor. “You have to be idealistic...

New Emails Reveal Prince Andrew And Jeffrey Epstein’s Friendship Went On For Longer Than He Admitted As He Told The Pedophile, “We’ll Play Some More Soon!”
Image
New emails reveal Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein’s friendship lasted longer than he admitted. It’s highly probable that Andrew may have lied in his infamous Newsnight interview.

Prince Andrew And Epstein’s Friendship Continued Two Months After He Said It Ended

Prince Andrew claimed he had stopped spending time with and corresponding with the known sex offender, but their relationship continued two months after the Duke of York said it did.

The disgraced Prince insisted that the last time he saw Epstein was in December 2010, shortly after he was released from prison for child prostitution offenses.

The resurfaced emails show the two of them chatted over email at least until late February 2011.

Andrew and Epstein communicated on the day a scandalous photo came out of Andrew and 17-year-old Virginia Giuffre, who later claimed she had been sex trafficked by Epstein. She later claimed she was forced to have sex with Andrew.

Prince Andrew Was In Contact With Epstein After He Said He’d Ended Friendship, Court Documents Reveal
Image
Prince Andrew exchanged friendly chat with the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein after the date he said he had broken off contact with his former friend, according to court documents freshly revealed.

In 2019, Andrew gave a notorious interview to the BBC’s Newsnight, in which he said he had not seen or spoken to Epstein after a meeting at the disgraced financier’s New York mansion in December 2010.

The interview was considered to have shown the prince in such a bad light that his mother, then Queen Elizabeth, ordered he step back from public life.

Now, the BBC reports that court documents in a case, involving the Fca and banker Jes Staley over the latter’s own connection with Epstein, include an email dated February 2011 in which Andrew wrote to his former friend “Keep in close touch and we’ll play some more soon!”’

Other emails released reveal the close...

Will Cain Aims to Bring Freewheeling Video Podcasts to Cable News. Could Others Follow?
Image
Neil Cavuto held forth at 4 p.m. on Fox News Channel from a New York studio for more than a quarter century, a veteran newscaster who was never afraid to call balls and strikes. His successor, Will Cain, will lead the hour from a decidedly different venue for cable-news — Dallas, Texas — and probably take a few swings.

“The Will Cain Show” debuts Tuesday at 4 p.m. eastern with what is likely to be a decidedly different look. Fox News has said the program will carry “a signature podcast style,” and Cain acknowledges people looking for the usual cable-news trappings may see something different. “It’s not a sermon, it’s a conversation,” he says of the format, adding: “There’s not the pretense of perfection. Nothing that I have to say is the word of God. I’m on the ride with everyone else in pursuit of the truth.”

CNN Could Face Backlash Over Potential Move of Jim Acosta
Image
Depending on who you ask, CNN anchor Jim Acosta is getting a chance to speak to a much broader audience with an assignment at a new and non-traditional time slot, or he’s being removed entirely from the usual daily discussion around the news.

Executives at CNN have asked Acosta to take a new role, anchoring a show that would air from midnight to 2 a.m. on the eastern coast of the U.S., according to two people familiar with the matter. Even so, the show has been pitched a chance to deliver live breaking news to audiences on the West coast and overseas at times when viewers in those regions are still active and craving information.

The offer was issued this week, according to these people, and Acosta, who gained a broader profile at CNN with his coverage of the White House during the first administration of President Donald Trump,...

BBC Pulling ‘MasterChef’ Christmas Specials After Gregg Wallace Allegations
Image
The BBC has U-turned from its original position on MasterChef by pulling Christmas episodes following the Gregg Wallace allegations.

The corporation had initially said that all filmed eps would still air, despite the fact that Wallace has stepped away from the show as producer Banijay UK investigates allegations of inappropriate behavior. Today, it has told BBC News that the Christmas eps will not air.

This comes after more than a dozen women accused Wallace of inappropriate behaviour and sexually inappropriate comments, including ex-Newsnight host Kirsty Wark.

Following that BBC News investigation last week, the BBC’s initial position was that it would continue to roll cameras, satisfying concerns from the likes of broadcasting union Bectu that pausing the show would lead to a loss of work for freelancers in a difficult market.

A BBC press release issued on Friday – after the Wallace allegations were made public – said a Celebrity MasterChef...

Gregg Wallace Apologizes After UK Government Calls TV Presenter’s Defense Of His Actions “Inappropriate & Misogynistic” – Update
Image
Updated 06.11 a.m. Pt: Gregg Wallace has now apologized for suggesting allegations made against him of inappropriate behavior came from “a handful of middle-class women of a certain age.”

After a UK government spokesperson called the MasterChef presenter’s remarks “inappropriate and misogynistic,” Wallace took to Instagram once again to fall on his sword and say he will take some time out.

“I want to apologize for any offense that I caused with my post yesterday, and any upset I may have caused to a lot of people,” he said. “I wasn’t in a good head space when I posted it. I’ve been under a huge amount of stress, a lot of emotion, I felt very alone, under siege, yesterday, when I posted it.”

Wallace added that “it’s obvious to me I need to take some time out” while an investigation into his behavior on set is...

Gregg Wallace Makes First Statement Since Inappropriate Behavior Allegations: “I Can See The Complaints Coming From A Handful Of Middle-Class Women Of A Certain Age”
Image
Gregg Wallace has issued his first statement since more than a dozen women accused him of making inappropriate sexual comments and inappropriate behavior.

The MasterChef host took to Instagram to record a video in which he hit out at his accusers, saying the accusations come from a “handful of middle-class women of a certain age.”

“I’ve been doing MasterChef for 20 years – amateur, professional and Celebrity MasterChef – and I think in that time I have worked with over 4,000 contestants of all different ages, all different backgrounds, all walks of life,” Wallace said. “And apparently now, I’m reading in the paper, there’s been 13 complaints in that time. Now, in the newspaper I can see the complaints coming from a handful of middle-class women of a certain age just from Celebrity MasterChef. This isn’t right.”

The accusations were published in a BBC News investigation from 13 women including ex-Newsnight host Kirsty Wark,...

King Charles Cuts Off Brother Prince Andrew, Ending $1.3 Million Allowance & Security Funding After He Refuses To Move Out Of $38 Million Estate
Image
King Charles has taken significant steps to cut financial ties with his brother, Prince Andrew, according to an excerpt from Robert Hardman’s updated biography Charles III: New King. New Court. The Inside Story.

The book reveals that Charles ordered the Keeper of the Privy Purse to stop Andrew’s $1.3 million (£1 million) annual personal allowance and cease funding his security. “The Duke had certainly been faring better than expected since his brother succeeded to the throne,” Hardman wrote.

The decision also ends the King’s support for Andrew’s private security at the Royal Lodge, which reportedly cost “a substantial seven-figure sum annually.” Hardman noted, “In August, it was widely reported (and not disputed) that the King was no longer prepared to renew that contract beyond the autumn of 2024.”

MSNBC’s Primetime ‘Avengers’: Rachel Maddow, Nicolle Wallace and Joy Reid Assemble to Battle Cable News’ Old Rules
Image
Joy Reid got the call while she was waiting in a restaurant at New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to get on a plane to Paris. Nicolle Wallace received a summons, she remembers, when “I was in the middle of nowhere with my son and had no makeup.” To respond to similar requests, says Rachel Maddow, “I have made illegal U-turns on the state highway.”

When “The Avengers” are needed, no one can ignore the alert.

Reid, Wallace and Maddow look nothing like Iron Man, Captain America, Thor or any of the other super-powered characters who populate the well-watched Marvel films from Disney. And yet, on MSNBC, where each anchors her own program, they are part of an assemblage that is being convened with greater frequency.

“When there’s a moment,” says Rashida Jones, MSNBC’s president, the network likes to “bring the team together and elevate the seriousness of the news.

Inside Channel 4’s Ambitious Election Night Plans With Stormy Daniels, Michael Cohen and Brian Cox
Image
Channel 4 is gearing up for its first live U.S. election program in 32 years.

“There’s about a million moving parts,” Ian Rumsey, ITN’s managing director of content, tells The Hollywood Reporter about Tuesday’s overnight coverage. “And this election really matters, not just in the U.S., but in the U.K. and around the world.”

On Nov. 5, Democrat Kamala Harris will go head-to-head in the polls with Republican candidate and former president Donald Trump in what most analysts are agreeing is one of the tightest races in decades. The two trade the minimal less-than-a-point-lead in those key battleground states constantly, and Channel 4, partnering with CNN, sees it as ripe soil for an exhilarating live studio show.

Adult film actress Stormy Daniels, former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen (who reportedly paid Daniels hush money to stay quiet about her affair with the businessman-turned-politician), ex-U.K. prime minister Boris Johnson...

CNN Panel Guest Directs Racist Attack on Mehdi Hasan: “I Hope Your Beeper Doesn’t Go Off”
Image
CNN’s Newsnight descended into chaos and acrimony Monday night after Donald Trump surrogate Ryan Girdusky directed an Islamophobic attack on fellow panel guest Mehdi Hasan.

During a discussion about Trump’s now infamous Madison Square Garden rally, which saw a number of speakers make blatantly racist remarks about Black people, Palestinians, Latinos, Jews and, particularly, about Puerto Rico, the panel got heated, and Hasan said as a supporter of Palestinians he was used to people groundlessly accusing him of being an antisemite.

Girdusky then replied, “I hope your beeper doesn’t go off.” The quip, which heavily implied that Hasan was a terrorist, alluded to the recent spate of pager bombings carried out by Israel that targeted Hezbollah militants in Lebanon.

Hasan and the other guests immediately realized Girdusky’s insinuation and called him out on it, with Hasan asking Girdusky whether he wanted Hasan to die. “Did you just say I should die?...

CNN Bans Commentator Ryan Girdusky From Network After His Verbal Attack On Mehdi Hasan – Update
Image
Updated with CNN statement and commentator’s response: CNN says commentator Ryan Girdusky will no longer be welcome on the network after his offensive remark to fellow guest Mehdi Hasan on Monday night.

“There is zero room for racism or bigotry at CNN or on our air,” the network said in a statement shared by host Abby Phillip tonight.

Earlier tonight on NewsNight with Abby Phillip, Girdusky was ushered off the show during a commercial break after making a crass comment suggesting Hasan was a member of terrorist organization. In a video accompanying CNN’s statement, Philip apologized again for the incident just as she did earlier on her show.

Phillip also says in her video message that, although Hasan did not reappear after the commercial break, CNN did not ask him to leave as it had with Girdusky, and that the choice was Hasan’s. “In fact we really...

Rivals episode 4 review | This isn’t how journalism works
Rupert
Declan shows off more top journalism skills as he prepares for a showdown with Rupert. Here’s our Rivals episode 4 review.

Christ, the weather’s turned quick. Just one episode on from New Year’s Eve and Rupert’s already galivanting around in shirtsleeves. There’ll be no flirting for him if he catches a chill, I can tell him that much.

He needs to be on top form, too, because Declan has a nasty surprise in store. Finally persuading/forcing the neighbourhood cad onto his Graham Norton-meets-Newsnight chat show, Corinion’s attack dog has a piece of dirt so ruinous Taggie has to spend most of the episode persuading Rupert to drop out.

Meanwhile, Tony and Freddie have a day of hunting to look forward to, during which it transpires Freddie has a terrifying ability to massacre grouse. Unfortunately for everyone involved, Lisa McGrillis’ Valerie also turns up,...

Scripps Will Cut 200 Jobs After Shrinking National News Ambitions
Image
Scripps is backing out of a ambitious effort to offer national news across its many TV stations, and its reasons for doing so may give rivals the shudders.

The Cincinnati owner of TV stations and national networks like Ion told staffers Friday that it plans to shutter the national news programming produced by its Scripps News unit, resulting in what are expected to be 200 job cuts. Scripps in early 2023 combined its live-streaming Newsy outlet with its local-news operations and its Washington bureau to create Scripps News, which distributed national news programming across the company’s local stations and via streaming outlets.

The layoffs are to be completed by November 15.

The company found less-than-robust support for the venture from Madison Avenue, according to Adam Symons, Scripps’ CEO. “Amidst an already difficult linear television advertising marketplace, many brands and agencies have decided that advertising around national news is just too risky for...

What to watch this weekend September 20, 2024: TV awards contenders
Image
Hot on the heels of an impressive showing at the Emmys, FX is hoping its newest anthology series, the uniquely American drama “American Sports Story,” will capture viewers’ attention in much the same way. The first installment is based on the podcast “Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc.” from The Boston Globe’s award-winning Spotlight team and Wondery. It traces Hernandez’s (Josh Rivera) rise and fall, from his days as a high school standout in Bristol, Conn., to his death in prison in 2017, two years after being convicted of murder.

Across 10 riveting episodes — the first two of which are streaming on Hulu — the series explores Hernandez’s troubled life and career, and the issues that influenced and came to define it, including the commodification of brown and Black athletes and the reckless disregard for player safety. It’s an indictment of one of America’s biggest cultural institutions, and...

A Very Royal Scandal is a fascinating drama about Prince Andrew's infamous interview (Review)
Image
The 2019 royal interrogation of Prince Andrew has become one of the most talked-about interviews ever. The heated Newsnight interview saw BBC journalist Emily Maitlis question the Duke of York about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and his possible involvement in it. The exchange in Buckingham Palace was Andrew's chance to prove his innocence... and it backfired, enormously.

The interview, which the 3-episode miniseries chronicles, was chased down by Maitlis and willingly sought after by Prince Andrew to clear his name and public image. The 50-minute exchange famously backfired for Andrew, after some rather peculiar alibis, and questionable statements -- the fact that he doesn't sweat and that he could perfectly recall exactly what he was doing on one random day from decades ago.

A Very Royal Scandal - Season 3 - Episode 303

Funnily enough, the 2019 interview was dramatized earlier this year. Scoop premiered on Netflix in April, telling the same story,...

‘A Very Royal Scandal’ Review: Ruth Wilson and Michael Sheen Revisit Prince Andrew’s ‘Newsnight’ Interview in Sturdy Amazon Miniseries
Image
Amazon enthusiastically announced the Sept. 19 release date for A Very Royal Scandal with the declaration, “The critically acclaimed A Very … Scandal anthology is back!”

My primary questions include: Was “Scandal” included so that nobody would think A Very Royal Scandal was, in some way, a part of a franchise that perhaps started with 1996’s A Very Brady Sequel? Does your average television viewer even accept the existence of the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise? And, perhaps most sincerely, even if we acknowledge that the A Very Dot Dot Dot Scandal franchise exists, what does it mean? What are the unifying characteristics between 2018’s A Very English Scandal, 2021’s A Very British Scandal and now A Very Royal Scandal, a trio of limited series without an overlapping character, star, writer or director?

The first two installments focused on pre-Internet kerfuffles stirred up by the British press, while A Very Royal Scandal...

‘A Very Royal Scandal’ Recap (Episodes 1-3) Explained: What Happened To Prince Andrew?
Image
Directed by Julina Jerrold, A Very Royal Scandal takes us through the nightmare that Prince Andrew lived through after he agreed to give an interview to the BBC and be a guest on their show named Newsnight. The series is based on Emily Maitlis’ book named Airhead: The Imperfect Art of Making News and it makes us privy to what led to Prince Andrew and his team taking that decision and also to the furore created in the entire nation after the interview got aired in 2019. In retrospect, if we see, I think it was a horrendous decision to give that interview. It was as if Prince Andrew knew that the sea was full of sharks, but still he went for a swim, hoping that the fish wouldn’t devour him. I don’t know how Amanda Thirsk, his private secretary, couldn’t see the hazards of letting her boss...

‘A Very Royal Scandal’ Stars Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson on Why That Car-Crash Prince Andrew Interview Made for Such Jaw-Dropping TV: ‘He Thinks He’s Going to Be in Control of It’
Image
When Prince Andrew invited BBC current affairs show “Newsnight” to interview him at Buckingham Palace in 2019, neither he – nor his interviewer Emily Maitlis – had any inkling that it would not only result in the British royal’s public disgrace, including being stripped of his titles and patronages, but would spawn two dramatizations within five years. (And it’s likely they won’t be the last).

The interview was, to put it plainly, seismic. Not just personally catastrophic for Andrew, who found himself effectively barred from public life after it aired, as well as paying out a multi-million-dollar settlement to his accuser Virginia Giuffre, but reverberated through the royal family all the way up to the monarch.

The outsize impact of that interview is something that Michael Sheen, who plays the prince in Prime Video’s “A Very Royal Scandal,” out on Thursday, has had ample time to contemplate. To get into the role,...

A Very Royal Scandal Review: A Dramatic Diving into Recent Controversy
Image
A Very Royal Scandal tells the story of one of the more headline-making royal interviews in recent memory. The limited series focuses on Prince Andrew’s disastrous 2019 chat with BBC journalist Emily Maitlis, where he addressed disturbing allegations around his relationship with notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Premiering on Prime Video just months after a similar Netflix film called Scoop, the show knew viewers would come expecting juicy dramatizations of that infamous pow-wow. But it aimed higher, using its three-hour runtime to offer deeper context on the key players and weigh bigger questions stirred up by this scandal.

The series covers all the intrigue leading up to that fateful Newsnight sit-down between Maitlis and Prince Andrew, from the prince dismissing warnings to avoid the interview to Maitlis’s determination to secure it.

It recreates tense moments from their conversation and depicts fallout as the prince’s world unravels while Maitlis faces celebrity’s consequences.

Real-Life Beatrice In ‘A Very Royal Scandal’: Where Is Prince Andrew’s Daughter Now?
Image
In A Very Royal Scandal, we saw that Princess Beatrice, the older daughter of Prince Andrew, unexpectedly attended the pre-meet where Prince Andrew met the BBC Newsnight team to get an idea of the kind of questions they were going to ask. Neither Emily Maitlis nor Sam McAlister had ever imagined that they would have to discuss the case of sexual assault against the Prince in front of his own daughter. But nonetheless, she was in the room, and that’s when the BBC team realized that apart from Amanda Thirsk, Andrew’s secretary, even Beatrice played a key role in deciding whether her father should do the interview or not. In real life too, Beatrice did attend the meeting, and she was in fact hugely disappointed and distressed after the interview aired on November 16th, 2019. But before discussing the kind of impact the backlash had on Princess Beatrice, let...

‘A Very Royal Scandal’ Ending Explained: Why Did Emily Quit The BBC After Her Interview?
Image
A Very Royal Scandal is a realistic depiction of everything that went down before and after Emily Maitlis’ interview for Newsnight with Prince Andrew. The 3-parter tells the story as is and brings to light how naive the prince must’ve been to believe he could fix this problem himself. The interview, which looks like a grilling in post, didn’t come by easily, and seeing how it turned out, we can understand why. A Very Royal Scandal attempts to present hard facts surrounding the whole thing while maintaining a non-judgmental lens on both leading characters, Emily and Andrew. Of course, this doesn’t mean you don’t get to form your opinions on them, but that’s the fun of television, no? The almost documentary-like show begins with Emily rushing to the palace and sweating profusely. We know by now that this isn’t really a problem for the prince.

Real-Life People In ‘A Very Royal Scandal’ And Where Are They Now
Image
It could be said that A Very Royal Scandal was a documentation of whatever happened in 2019 with Prince Andrew and its aftermath. Almost all the characters shown in the series are inspired by real-life people, though it is possible that the director might have taken certain creative liberties in portraying them and dramatized the narrative just to increase the entertainment quotient. So, let’s get to know these characters a little more and find out what happened to them after the disastrous BBC interview that shook the entire nation.

Prince Andrew

Life was not the same after Prince Andrew gave the Newsnight interview to the BBC. Although he still lived in the Royal Lodge (which in itself became an issue for the royal family), he lost his reputation, and he was referred to as “the disgraced” by the people. Michael Sheen played Prince Andrew in the series, and I must...
