La fille prodigue

I didn't intend to watch this arthouse film as I came across it unexpectedly on a website while looking for a different film. It stars Jane Birkin, a British actress who became famous in France, as Anne, a woman is going through a separation with her partner and ends up living with her father for a period of time. The film is artsy with the sort of stereotypically French setup of mundane conversations between various characters and very little action. The film gets off to a good start with kind of a surreal tone, but it doesn't quite live up to expectations.

Frankly, La Fille prodigue feels like a stage play, with passable performances from Birkin and character actor Michel Piccoli who plays Anne's father. I am trying my best to leave a positive review even if the film didn't quite live up to its potential. There is a surprising twist in the film that may not be surprising to everyone and I won't give it away. It's a rather forgettable film but worth a watch for droll scenes like when Anne head butts her father while arguing with him.
