Woody's whale hunting and the opposite of dopey

Was very fond of Woody Woodpecker and his cartoons as a child. Still get much enjoyment out of them now as a young adult, even if there are more interesting in personality cartoon characters and better overall cartoons.

That is in no way knocking Woody, because many of his cartoons are a lot of fun to watch and more and also still like him a lot as a character. He is a lot of fun here and is never obnoxious or a jerk. While he is less manic than his original personality, he's far from bland. The whale is good support as an opponent and then as a friend. The rest of the characters are a bit bland though.

Sure, the story when it comes to the Woody Woodpecker action has its typical moments, though the premise is intriguingly different. Time and budget constraints shows in some of the animation, which is a little rushed looking in the drawing and detail wise it's on the simplistic and careless side like many of Woody's cartoons from this period continuing through to the 60s.

Not all the animation is applicable to that. It's brightly coloured with some nice if simple backgrounds. There are far worse-looking Woody Woodpecker cartoons.

Music is bouncy, energetic and very lushly orchestrated, not only synchronising and fitting with the action very well but enhancing it. The whole cartoon goes at a lively pace, especially in the second half.

Gags are always very amusing and never less than that, some of it is actually very funny and timed very well, the ending is very cute and the voice work is solid.

In conclusion, pretty good and a long way from dopey. 7/10 Bethany Cox

This is not the best film adaptation of a great . . .

. . . American novel. This picture is so poorly done that it is not even included among the 115 official versions of the pale whale's saga. From the get-go, when the name of the maimed captain's main ride is misspelled as the "Pea Pod"--rather than the Pea Quad--PINK WHALE deviates significantly from the original story. Furthermore, Chapter 86--in which the story's narrator details whale tails--is glossed over entirely by PINK WHALE. Therefore, if you only have time to see one Whale Flick this year, this misfire is NOT your best choice. You could see THE WHALE with Brendan Fraser. Better yet, why not view the 1956 white whale tale with Gregory Peck?
