It's Hard to Ignore an Imaginary Elephant

I am not a fan of the limited animation style of UPA cartoons. Although the visuals are frequently designed in an imaginative fashion -- as is this one -- with few exceptions these were not choices made by considering what would serve the subject, but by first considering what they could do with the budget. The result, as with this one, frequently qualifies as radio with pictures.

Happily, it's very good radio with pictures. Director Cannon starts with a fine script in which Christopher's parents indulge him in his imaginary pet, riding about on the elephant he has conjured up and helping him wash the beast. However, the visuals, while certainly interesting and appropriate, are ugly. If this were not one of UPA's house styles, I might think it more interesting. As it is, it comes across as cheap.

    Christopher Crumpet's Playmate

When the dog pins exasperated dad to the carpet for the latest time, he tells son "Christopher" to get shot of it and to play with his imaginary pal "Webster" instead. Turns out that this magical pal is an elephant and that, well maybe he's not so conjured up in the boy's imagination after all. Nutty as peanut brittle? Well let's wait and see as his dad looks like he's up for promotion and his colleague is trying to paint him as bonkers. Will boss "Mr. Tailgate" think this is madness, or maybe he might just have the last laugh? It's a simply drawn animation with some light-heartedness that plays with the family and workplace dynamics quite entertainingly and I enjoyed it.

    Enjoyable follow-up to Christopher Crumpet

Christopher Crumpet has the most remarkable imagination! This is a very amusing and quite gentle little cartoon and is well-animated in the limited-animation style of the UPA studio. Not their best short, assuredly, but quite good in any case. Worth watching. Recommended.
