The Sony Classics release “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” though, has defied expectations of what a modern rock doc can do in cinemas, on its way to finding the favor of fans as a home video hit, too. Why did Tim think he was funny? Well, a cool thing happens in 8th grade when the cool kid makes a joke — even a lame joke — the other kids laugh. The masses laughing at Tim’s bad jokes never bothered me.

About an hour into Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson’s debut feature “Summer of Soul,” Sylvester Stewart (aka Sly Stone) and his interracial, mixed-gender band takes the stage of the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival and proceed to blow the crowd away. Questlove’s Oscar-winning documentary about the festival illustrated how the sonic diversity of the lineup was partly a microcosm for the big-tent nature of late-1960s Black consciousness. Gospel, blues, pop, R&b, and rock ‘n’ roll were all represented at the festival because Black culture was not, and never will be, a monolith. It’s a testament to Sly and the Family Stone’s musical power that they managed to stand out as a highlight from a foster filled with heavy hitters like Nina Simone and a young Stevie Wonder. There’s a reason that the film ends with their stirring performance of “I Want to Take You Higher.”

Former NBC Universal Television Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin is taking a job as VP of unscripted series at Netflix — reporting to Netflix VP of nonfiction series Brandon Riegg. It’s a bit of a reversal for the two execs: In 2010, Riegg joined NBC as vice president of alternative series & development, reporting to the heads of alternative programming there, who in turn reported to Gaspin.

It’s a return to the executive ranks for Gaspin, who most recently ran Gaspin Media as president. It was there that his output included Netflix’s “The Tinder Swindler,” as well as its “Rhythm & Flow.” His other credits included “The First Lady.”

Netflix has added former NBC Universal Television Entertainment chief Jeff Gaspin to its executive team.

Gaspin will be vp unscripted series at the streamer, charged with curating and growing Netflix’s slate of reality programming. He joins Netflix a month after Jenn Levy, who previously oversaw unscripted series at the company, departed. Gaspin will report to Brandon Riegg, vp nonfiction series.

“I feel a bit like Al Pacino in The Godfather Part III: Just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in,” Gaspin said in a statement. “I’m so thrilled to join Brandon and the unscripted team at Netflix. I was always most successful and happiest when I built or ran unscripted at VH1, Bravo and NBCU. I can’t wait to do the same at Netflix.”

The streamer has hired Jeff Gaspin as VP Unscripted Series after a search for a high-profile figure to lead its burgeoning reality business.

It comes after Deadline revealed that Jenn Levy left the company last month and Brandon Riegg, who is VP Nonfiction Series, to whom Gaspin will report, started a search for top unscripted chief.

There were plenty of big unscripted names in the running for the position and Riegg is understood to have enquired about a number of execs overseeing unscripted for the broadcast networks and major studios.

A new animated series from Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, should have been a clear winner and modern cartoon classic. Oddly enough, Bean’s misadventures through Dreamland and its constant fantasy genre subversions in Disenchantment have barely left a mark on the medium. It initially seemed like Disenchantment had somehow learned the worst lessons from The Simpsons and Futurama through a focus on dense lore and heavy serialized stories. Disenchantment, while fun, would struggle with its growing scope and undergo a perpetual identity crisis on the type of series it wanted to be and what it does best.

It’s been a bumpy journey, but Disenchantment impressively pulls everything together for its final season. This last batch of episodes finally figures out how to use this big world and its many supporting characters after seasons of awkward attempts to connect these dots.

Originally known as CBS All Access, Paramount Plus has emerged as a stronger player in the streaming arena by offering content from CBS and Paramount Pictures. They — Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus — were the lip-synching scofflaws, convicted in the court of public opinion of fraud against a generation of FM Top 40 radio listeners robbed of our precious sense that music and its artistic authorship were directly linked. The punishment? Permanent professional ostracism and punchline status — though when Pilatus died of an accidental drug overdose in 1998, the reality became even more punitive.

Luke Korem’s new documentary Milli Vanilli attempts to give the “Blame It on the Rain” non-singers 106 minutes of re-evaluation. Were they perpetrators or victims? If they were some gradation of the latter, who were the actual villains? If they were some gradation of the former, did the punishment fit the crime? What did Rob and Fab actually do, what was their actual sin and why did audiences respond the way they did?...

Some three decades after one of the biggest scandals in the history of pop music, Milli Vanilli still commands a certain fascination for those who lived through the 1980s. Their debut album went six times platinum and they won the Best New Artist Grammy in 1990, but later that year Fabrice Morvan and Rob Pilatus, the faces of the group, had to do a mea culpa because they had not actually sung on the album.

Luke Korem’s documentary, “Milli Vanilli,” which receives its world premiere at the Tribeca Festival and will stream on Paramount+ in the fall, is well-researched and polished, even if it’s essentially a feature-length episode of “Behind the Music.”

Lollapalooza, the music festival created by Jane’s Addiction’s Perry Farrell, will be the subject of a three-part docuseries on Paramount+.

The streamer has ordered Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza to be directed by Michael John Warren, director of HBO’s Spring Awakening and Nicki Minaj doc My Time Again.

It will explore the iconic festival, which launched as a traveling circus of bands including Jane’s Addiction, Nine Inch Nails, Butthole Surfers, Rollins Band and Violent Femmes in 1991.

The festival subsequently featured bands including Pearl Jam, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr., The Jesus Lizard, Sonic Youth and Hole before becoming a standalone festival in Chicago with some international spinoffs.

By now, we all are so familiar with the structure of the music bio-documentary that when we watch one, we know what to expect: the hard-scrabble beginnings, the rise to fame, the pressure of being at the top, the crushing fall, the victorious comeback. VH1’s “Behind the Music” trained us so well.

And that’s precisely what Brett Morgen wanted to avoid when he set out to make a film about David Bowie. “Moonage Daydream,” which premiered in May at the Cannes film festival and showed again at the Toronto fest earlier this week, is a work of nonfiction centered on Bowie, but it’s hardly a traditional tour through the Thin White Duke’s life. As Steve Pond, TheWrap’s Executive Editor, Awards, noted in his review of the film out of Cannes, “Moonage Daydream” “abandons all thought of straightforward narrative in favor of an immersive and purposefully mysterious and chaotic Bowie experience.

Entertainment One is expanding its partnership with unscripted production company Creature Films by signing the “Siesta Key” producer to a multiyear overall deal, Variety has learned exclusively.

The pact, which is the latest extension of a first-look deal originally signed between eOne and Mark Ford’s Creature Films in 2015, evolves the relationship into exclusive development territory and is good through 2024.

Throughout their six-year partnership, Creature Films, which Variety has confirmed recently appointed Pat Lambert as head of development, and eOne have produced MTV’s “Siesta Key,” which was recently renewed for a fifth season, “Behind the Music” for Paramount+, the upcoming Paramount+ doc “The Lady and the Legend” about Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett, Amazon’s “Mary J. Exclusive: Anonymous Content is aggressively bolstering its unscripted television slate with a slew of new projects including music, sports, cooking, dating and documentary series.

The company has unveiled an unscripted and non-fiction development slate featuring seven projects. It comes after the hire of former NBCUniversal exec Jessica Grimshaw as SVP of Unscripted Films, Television and Podcasts last April.

Projects include The Balloon World Cup, based on a real-life contest organized by Barcelona legend Gerard Piqué, medical scam series Death Brokers, Deepfake Dating, an adaptation of food book Gastro Obscura, Lance Bangs’ music series I Don’t Belong Here, Billie Jd Porter’s It’s Different for Girls and a project about Factitious Disease Disorder (full details below).
