    Snowy melodrama.

During the Occupation,French cinema fluctuated between excellent ("le corbeau" "le ciel est à vous" 'les enfants du paradis") and horrible.

Jean Stelli belongs to the wrong side. The precedent year, his weepie "le voile bleu" was a big success ;while awful it is interesting to watch today as a museum piece and as a reflection of the Vichy government moral doctrine.

"La valse blanche" ,on the other hand, has nothing to recommend it:a musician ,whose lungs were in bad shape ,left his fiancée -a doctor- for the fresh mountains air. There,he met a beautiful girl whom he had already seen a long time ago.And would you believe it?The doctors had given up hope for her!And would you believe it?The fiancée who was bored to death in Paris came to see her sweetheart.

It takes a lot of talent to handle such a tear jerker;some directors such as Stahl or Sirk can.Stelli cannot .His movie is so sweet so syrupy it makes you sick.
