    From The Ballad

Leo Delaney and Florence Turner love each other. Leo goes to sea to earn enough money to start them out. But someone steals Miss Turner's family cow, her father breaks his leg, and her mother is sick. Along comes Auld Robin Gray in the person of William Shea to court her. And times are bad, so they get married, and Delaney shows up.

It's from a Scots ballad written in the 18th century by Lady Anne Barnard, and is typical of the dour stuff that was popular back then. Short poems were a favorite source for movies about this time. The movie makers thought they added a literary sheen to their productions, and if you chose an old enough one, there were no fees to be paid.
