A commercial, soapy, protracted muddling of fact and fiction.

"Thanks of a Grateful Nation" is a docudrama which attempts to tell the tale of Gulf War Syndrome. A Showtime commercial journeyman drama which muddles fact with fiction in the interest of entertainment, "Thanks..." runs too long at three hours, slogs around in woebegone soapy sentimentality with fictional subplots, is fraught with overtones of paranoia, and doesn't do justice to the interests and people it pretends to support. Those interested in GWS can find the real deal easily on the Inet. Pass on this one.

    for your information.

Well it is 2019 and I was looking for a DVD of this movie because it is the truth on our behalf. Jeran S. Gallimore is my brother and it is true not everything about this movie is true. It was a hell of a lot worse. Those who wrote it was propaganda. LOL I would do anything to get the truth to the American people. I am Jerrilinn Gallimore Folz. And Jeran is my brother then and always. He loved the Air Force and loved the brothers he served with. And just after his term was up the Gulf War, the real war of shock and awe was told to be at its end. But it wasn't. It was the age of be there war. It was a phone call away and I listened as the bombs were going off. I was getting real life photos of horrific destruction of life. I was there inserting new catheters in his bladder for his urine bag when he got home. Don't tell me it didn't happen. It was a living nightmare for us and thousands like us. And we can't forget it hard as we try. And I came to this page just to find a DVD and got the privileged to read some reviews. If you want to test me further on accuracy meet me on fb as Jerrilinn Gallimore Folz. I am public because I have nothing to hide. Love Love Love to all the veterans and especially the brothers who served with my brother. Merry Christmas 2019

    Humble, pedestrian, nonetheless noble effort

A solid, perhaps sombre treatment of a literally toxic subject that many would, and did, try to ignore and brush under the carpet. The cast in the main are workmanlike and there's even a couple of recognisable faces like Ted Danson from Friends as Jim Tuite, and the substantial Brian Denney playing Sen. Donald Riegle. The screenplay and story arc are a kind of homage to All the President's Men, with its own Deepthroat in the shadows, stacks of paperwork, political stonewalling, etc and there's more than a bit of recreated Washington committee hearings, but these do lend some authenticity to the matter and provide the best bits as far as I'm concerned.... Okay it is a TV movie but I did have a problem with some of the production values in particular the sound architecture which was very strange and flat, and perhaps it was just my TV I don't know but the sound effects and the schmaltzy soundtrack did seem to overwhelm and indeed drown out some of the dialogue. As for the human drama of those affected, it was nice to have a human face on some of the people involved in this catastrophe. I note one reviewer was upset that the whole matter of the rectitude of the war itself wasn't dealt with, and indeed that might be a point that one draws from this. But of course that was not the remit of this particular movie and it strains to be largely pro-veteran, and patriotic, but it is cynical about politicians, and we never hear from President Bush. The "ghost of Vietnam" never leaves the story from start to the epilogue. The main arguement seems to be that one needs to create a future battlefield that's a lot more safe for the American soldier at least.

One of the Best Made for Cable Movies Ever

This important movie about Gulf War Syndrome and the various bureaucrats' efforts to deny its existence originally aired on the Showtime network and is now (Nov 9) available to rent on video. Unfortunately, it's a "Blockbuster Exclusive" but just this once you should go there and rent this outstanding motion picture, the most moving and troubling search for truth since Oliver Stone's JFK. Ted Danson and Jennifer Jason Leigh give the expected solid performances, but the revelation here is Steven Weber; his character moved me to tears. Try to sit through this film and not get angry about that "good government bullshit" that Gulf War vets had to (and many of them still have to) endure. Do not miss this one.

Poor acting, cheap sets, and unproven charges.

Another vast conspiracy movie that tries to blame the US government and the Armed Forces (especially the Army) for every disaster since the Great Flood. Anyone who has ever served time in the US military can see how bogus this film is. Uniforms, equipment, sets, and mannerisms are all wrong. (And of course, all Senior Officers are either corrupt criminals or total idiots.) Blatant propaganda with no attempt at objectivity. Most of the theories presented have been disproven over the past few years. Uses every cliche', rumor, and Urban Legend from the Gulf-all are presented as gospel. (The truth is, no one knows for sure why some GW vets are sick and others are healthy as horses.) PS This is not new. War is NOT fun and I know WWII, Korean, and Viet Nam vets with some pretty serious ailments, too. (And the government has the responsibility to take care of all of them.) Sensationalistic movies like this will not solve the problem!
