    Dignity, Always Dignity

Hal Roach tried to distance himself from the other comedy short producers not just by making funny ones, but by hiring legitimate stars to act as the centerpiece, around which his studio full of skilled comics could caper. Here it's Claude Gillingwater, most notable for his roles of grouches -- he played the Earl to Mary Pickford's Little Lord Fauntleroy and maintained a specialty in grouches for another ten years -- Shirley Temple always wound up charming him.

In this one he falls in love with Vivien Oakland, who plays a gum-chewing floozy. Gillingwater gets to use a prop bulldog, and the comedy is handled by James Finlayson, Tyler Brooke and Buddy the Dog. It's a little slow off the start, but the final gag is a doozy.
