Originally conceptualized by Japanese manga artist Akira Toriyama (R.I.P.), the world of Dragon Ball and its numerous anime series and theatrical animated films have been going strong for the past 40 years. For American audiences, it all started in 2001 when Cartoon Network aired dubbed episodes of Dragon Ball. A boy with monkey-like abilities named Goku teams up with a girl named Bulma who is trying to find the seven dragon balls. Along the way, they encounter villains and enter the World Martial Arts Tournament.

Dragon Ball Gt doesnt have the best reputation in the grander scope of Dragon Ball properties, but this doesnt mean that its not without its triumphs.Gt picks up five years after Dragon Ball Zs ten-year time-skip epilogue, yet its introductory episodes skew more to a younger audience than the more mature crowd who loved Dragon Ball Z. Goku is and has always been the main protagonist of the Dragon Ball series, and it doesn’t look like that is ever going to change, even in the fairly distant future of the franchise–just, not the way fans think.
In the first chapter of the Dragon Ball manga, Goku was presented as the series’ lead character, proven true by his amazing strength and literal call to adventure. During those travels, Bulma and Goku liberated small towns from violent gangs, giant monsters, and even a global fascist regime, and it was always Goku’s unparalleled power that pushed them over the edge to victory. This rang true throughout every subsequent era of the series, as it...
