This is a very sensitively created Malayalam film about a child who is selected to accept Sanyasa
A film where a child's grandfather agrees to the request from Matha upon seeing the child's jaatakam that he's most suited for Sanyasa. Note that the Matha never pressurises but sends a request based on the child's predeliction. In ancient tradition this is considered an honour and the grandfather agrees. Later he realises that the parents are not inclined to it. However even when the child's uncle - who initially plans to pick up a fight with the matha - is unable to refuse based on the genuine divinity of the main Sanyasi, they see the grandfather's point of view.
The focus then shifts on the child's point of view. The pangs he faces about having to shed mortal relationships including with his parents, having to lose his friends, are very heart breaking. Note how even when he eventually runs away from the Matha, they do not chase him, rather leave it to be his decision. The child sees that his family and friends have come to terms with it, and walks back to his future.
It is clearly tragic from the child and parents psychology and emotional point of view. The message that should be taken is that while an honour, embracing Sanyasa should happen only if a child willingly shows inclination to it.
All the actors have performed really well.. Highly recommend a watch.

Deshadanam is undoubtedly one of the finest Malayalam film ever. In a Stupid industry with mainstream film makers. and overrated superstars, only a director like Jayarajs would dare to make a film in this subject. Vijayaraghavan (father) was so original on screen. He is one of the most under appreciated actor. All the other characters did justice to the story. Especially mom and grandfather. The music was so smoothly sinking to the film. that we could feel it playing inside our heads. Kaliveedu is my personal favorite. I would suggest Ottaal, Jayarajs latest film to everyone who genuinely liked this film. Thank you for reading my review.
