Big Cats, Little Dogs

It's a football game of the cats against the dogs in this Pooch the Pup cartoon from Walter Lantz.

It seems that in this period every cartoon studio did football cartoons; usually they were combined with college themes, just like the live action features with Jack Oakie. The gags in this one are pretty good, with their kitchen sink approach to gags. However, they are oddly timed: they do a gag and hold it too long. That indicates that they thought the audience would be laughing a lot better than the throwaway nature of the jokes warranted. This start-and-stop pacing makes this one only erratically amusing.
