In the realm of dinosaur cinema, if there is such a thing, Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" is the unquestioned king. It's not unlike how Spielberg's "Jaws" is the unquestioned king of all shark movies. Everything else is just gunning for second place. When it comes to dinosaur motion pictures, though, it's largely been a distant second, and most people would probably just put their second-favorite "Jurassic" film in that number two spot. At long last, however, a non-"Jurassic" contender has entered the arena. That contender is "Primitive War."

The masked maniacs will unleash bloody carnage once again in The Strangers: Chapter 2 this coming September, and the film has received its official “R” rating from the MPA this week.
The Strangers: Chapter 2 is rated “R” for “Bloody violence, and language.”
How does that rating compare to the three previous films in the franchise? They have all been rated “R” from the beginning, but for slightly different reasons. Here’s the breakdown…
The Strangers (2008): “Rated R for violence/terror and language.” The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018): “Rated R for horror violence and terror throughout, and for language.” The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024): “Rated R for horror violence, language and brief drug use.”
Just over one year after The Strangers: Chapter 1 kickstarted a new trilogy of terror tales, Lionsgate is getting set to unleash The Strangers: Chapter 2 in theaters on September 26.

“Every Stranger has a past.” That’s the tagline attached to a new trio of posters for The Strangers: Chapter 2 out of Midsummer Scream tonight, with the posters suggesting that we’re about to learn a bit more about Man in the Mask, Pinup Girl, and Dollface.
Director Renny Harlin recently teased, “People wanted to know more about the Strangers. We are showing some glimpses of their history in the movie, which I think deepens those characters, makes them more interesting — but doesn’t take anything away from the fact that these are real people, they could be anywhere around us, and the killings are totally random.”

It’s been nearly 20 years since the sentence “Because you were home” traumatized an entire generation. Between that and the log truck scene from Final Destination 2, we never stood a chance. There was something truly chilling about Bryan Bertino’s home invasion horror flick, The Strangers, as it was such a senseless and random brutal act that it made all of us extra certain we’d locked the doors at night. The film was eventually followed by a second chapter, The Strangers: Prey at Night, courtesy of Johannes Roberts, and in 2024, Renny Harlin returned to the genre to kick off what will eventually be a trilogy with The Strangers: Chapter 1. In just a little over one month, the terror will continue when Harlin’s The Strangers — Chapter 2 breaks onto screens. As part of Collider’s Exclusive Preview event, we’re thrilled to share a sneak peek image of the...

Everyone loves a good shark movie. Ever since Jaws hit theaters and broke box office records in 1975, it’s been a reliable horror movie genre. Case in point: Netflix’s Under Paris has become one of the streaming service’s most popular non-English language film of all time (and a sequel is now in the works). While everyone knows Jaws is by far the best shark movie ever, there are loads of other movies out there that should make you just as afraid to get in the water. We’re gonna need a bigger boat as we travel these dangerous waters of shark films.
Zombie (1979)
Ok. Already I’m cheating, but I mean . . . come on. This has one of the best shark scenes in cinematic history. During an early scene of the movie, a woman decides to go for a swim in the lovely Caribbean waters when a tiger shark appears.

“If the first movie was a home invasion, the second is a town invasion,” The Strangers: Chapter 2 director Renny Harlin teased at San Diego Comic-Con tonight. “The Strangers are among us, and they could be anyone.” Watch the first official clip for a sneak peek of the new sequel.

Here’s the official synopsis: “The Strangers are back – more brutal and relentless than ever. When they learn that one of their victims, Maya (Madelaine Petsch), is still alive, they return to finish what they’ve started. With nowhere to run and no one to trust, Maya must survive another horrific chapter of terror as The Strangers – driven by a senseless, unceasing purpose – pursue her, more than willing to kill anyone who stands in their way.

Directed by Renny Harlin from a screenplay by Duncan Kennedy, Donna Powers, and Wayne Powers, Deep Blue Sea has the following synopsis: On an island research facility, Dr. Susan McAlester is harvesting the brain tissue of DNA-altered sharks as a possible cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Now, with sharks outnumbering their human captors, McAlester and her team must figure out a way to stop them from escaping to the ocean and breeding. Lionsgate UK has launched the first trailer and new artwork for The Strangers – Chapter 2, promising a relentless continuation of the home invasion saga when it arrives in cinemas on 26 September 2025. Directed by Renny Harlin and penned by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland from Bryan Bertino’s original characters, this second instalment picks up immediately after the harrowing events of Chapter 1, following sole survivor Maya Lucas as she tries to piece her life back together.
The trailer opens on Maya (Madelaine Petsch) lying in a sterile hospital room, the flicker of fluorescent lights casting long shadows across her bandaged form. A tension-steeped score builds as she steps out into a deserted suburban street, every distant creak and echo suggesting that the masked assailants are never far behind. Brief cuts show Gabriel Basso’s Gregory tracking eerie footprints in mud, while Ema Horvath’s Shelly returns to the scene of that fateful night,...

"Who are they? Why are they doing this?" "Does there have to be a why...?" Lionsgate has revealed the full official trailer for the next sequel in the current The Strangers horror trilogy, all three of them directed by Finnish filmmaker Renny Harlin. The Strangers - Chapter 2 is "the chilling next chapter of The Strangers franchise" which began (as a complete restart) in the summer of 2024 earlier this year with The Strangers - Chapter 1 (trailer here). It's not really a prequel or a sequel, it's a re-imagining of this masked killers horror franchise. The Strangers are back – more brutal and relentless than ever. When they learn that one of their victims, Maya, is still alive, they return to finish what they’ve started. Just over one year after The Strangers: Chapter 1 kickstarted a new trilogy of terror tales, Lionsgate is getting set to unleash The Strangers: Chapter 2 in theaters on September 26.
Watch the official trailer for The Strangers: Chapter 2 below, which takes a Halloween II-style approach by continuing the survival story of Madelaine Petsch’s final girl, Maya.
And much like Halloween II, this Chapter 2 is also set inside a hospital. The upcoming film will also further explore the mysterious town of Venus, Oregon, and the official trailer suggests that we may be learning more about the masked killers and why they do what they do.
Then again, as one character remarks, “Does there have to be a why?” That’s been the M.O. of The Strangers from the beginning, with the lack of a motive exemplifying the chilling pointlessness of the horror on display in Bryan Bertino’s terrifying original movie.

Steven Spielberg's "Jaws" is one of the most commercially successful, critically beloved, and important blockbuster movies ever made. Full stop. It just turned 50 this week, and few movies that are five decades old look quite as fresh to modern audiences as this masterful, terrifying depiction of man vs. nature. Put simply, it's the best shark movie ever made -- and it's not even close.
Me saying that "Jaws" is the greatest shark movie to ever grace the silver screen is far from original, it's pretty much accepted as fact (or as close as one gets to fact when expressing a critical opinion). That being the case, it's not surprising that we've had many shark movies over the years that have tried to mimic the success of Spielberg's 1975 cinematic classic. It’s summer, which means it’s beach season, but if you’re like me, Jaws ruined beaches for you long ago. Spielberg’s shark movie instilled a phobia of fish in me at an early age that has grown and evolved as I’ve matured. Still, there’s something about sharks and shark horror that attracts me, even if most entries are as compelling as rotten chum. No movie before or after has come even close to reaching the masterful terror of Jaws, but in honor of its 50th anniversary, I bring you ’10 Great Shark Movies That Aren’t ‘Jaws‘ and Where to Watch Them.’ Be warned, I’m using the term “great” pretty loosely here.

Jaws really did a number on the public’s perception of sharks, and their reputation has been struggling ever since. So it’s cool that Dangerous Animals is a shark movie that treats them as they are: creatures who are simply trying to survive. They are not sentient beings who want to jump out of the water and grab humans into the depths, and they only attack when provoked or think a human is something else. So the idea of a serial killer using sharks to kill his victims can shift the villain label away from the sharks, while still letting them in on the killer action, is intriguing. I enjoyed my time with Dangerous Animals (and you can check out my review Here).

Renny Harlin's Black Tides has found its leading man. John Travolta is set to join the project as the lead, Bill Pierce, the estranged father and grandfather of Rebecca and her son, Sebastian. Black Tides is an animal-attack thriller about a family's boat being attacked by rogue orcas off the coast of Spain. The movie is based off the real-life encounters of orcas attacking boats in the Strait of Gibraltar.
Travolta, star of Pulp Fiction, Grease, and many other blockbuster hits is certainly going to bring the weight of his star power to Black Tides. According to Deadline, Harlin had this to say about Travolta's involvement:
“John Travolta brings the perfect combination of grit, depth, vulnerability and charisma to the character of Bill Pierce, the estranged father, that achingly captures the tragedies of family dynamics,” said Harlin. “I can’t wait to show fans of big screen cinema how...

John Travolta, the Hollywood icon who starred in films like Pulp Fiction and Saturday Night Fever, is set to continue his late-career run of movies with a role in Renny Harlin's next movie, Black Tides. Travolta's last big studio project was in 2012, when he starred in Oliver Stone's Savages, and since then, he has mostly appeared in low-budget or independent action films.
Black Tides isn't exactly a big Hollywood studio film. It's produced by Nostromo Pictures, the Spanish TV studio led by Adrián Guerra and Núria Valls. Wikipedia informs us that, between the years of 2020 and 2024, “2020 to 2024, “there were at least five hundred reports of orcas interacting with boats off the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal, an unusual and unprecedented behavior.” And Deadline reports that Renny Harlin, whose directing credits include Deep Blue Sea, Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and The Strangers: Chapter 1 (as well as the yet-to-be-released Chapters 2 and 3), has signed on to direct the survival thriller Black Tides, which is inspired by the real-life orca attacks.
Written by Chris Sparling (Buried) and Ángel Agudo (Apocalypse Z), the film will tell the story of Rebecca, who reunites with her estranged father, Bill, in sunny Málaga expecting a healing family trip with her young son, Sebastian. Not to be confused with his upcoming shark thriller Deep Water, Renny Harlin is diving back into the water to direct Black Tides, Deadline reports.
Written by Chris Sparling (Buried) and Ángel Agudo (Apocalypse Z: The Beginning of the End), the survival thriller is inspired by real-life orca attacks that have occurred off the coast of southern Spain and Portugal.
It follows Rebecca, who reunites with her estranged father, Bill, in sunny Málaga expecting a healing family trip with her young son, Sebastian. Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water …
Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is launching a Great Bites this summer, “a season-long celebration of creature cinema.” Eep!
Obviously, this is timed to the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s shark-infested classic “Jaws,” with events including Alamo Drafthouse’s fan-favorite Movie Parties, the return of “Jaws” on the water and maybe the coolest event, a Rolling Roadshow screening of the movie in Martha’s Vineyard (where they originally shot “Jaws”) with live orchestral accompaniment. Dang.
Also included great bites is an exclusive screening of IFC Films and Shudder’s shark thriller “Dangerous Animals.” The Drafthouse event will be held, naturally, on the water, ahead of its nationwide theatrical release on June 6. That event will be held in the waters of Lake Travis at the Volente Beach Resort and will include a live Q&a with filmmaker Sean Byrne and star Hassie Harrison.

It was the “Footloose” of times, it was the “Ninja Rap” of times. We’re talking, of course, about the golden age of movie tie-in promotional singles of the ‘80s and ‘90s, a time when a well-placed theme could create the song and the movie of the summer, while a misused one probably involved Mc Hammer. In between were a lot of attempts that nobody remembers, because what was the point of making a movie if you couldn’t coerce a pop star to sell their soul for a lot of money?

Back in 2023, we heard that Gene Simmons of the rock band Kiss would be launching a new production company with Gary Hamilton (so the company is appropriately called Simmons/Hamilton Productions), and the first project they had given the greenlight was a shark thriller called Deep Water – with Deep Blue Sea director Renny Harlin attached to take the helm of the film! That film has since made its way through production, and Deadline reports that Magenta Light Studios, the distributor behind last year’s Strange Darling, has acquired the domestic rights to Deep Water, with plans to give it a theatrical release sometime in 2025.
Scripted by Pete Bridges and John Kim, Deep Water centers on an eclectic group of international passengers whose plane, en route from Los Angeles to Shanghai, is forced to make an emergency landing in shark-infested waters. The terrified group is forced to work together and overcome...

Shark action specialist Renny Harlin is back this year with Deep Water, starring Aaron Eckhart. It now has a distributor in the US, and set for release in 2025.
Filming wrapped on Deep Water, the latest movie from action director Renny Harlin, in February 2024. Almost exactly a year later, it’s been announced that it now has a US distributor: Magenta Light Studios, which put out last year’s excellent horror thriller, Strange Darling. Deep Water is now set for release in US cinemas this year, which potentially means a UK appearance won’t be too far behind.
The disaster thriller sees Harlin return to the realm of sharks, having previously directed the batty cult favourite Deep Blue Sea in 1999. Starring Aaron Eckhart and Ben Kingsley, Deep Water (not to be confused with the saucy Adrian Lyne film of the same title) is about an LA to Shanghai plane journey that goes awry,...

Jurassic World Rebirth is the next chapter in the sprawling dinosaur franchise, and I’m calling it now: It will battle with Jurassic World: Dominion for the title of which movie did more harm to the universe.
We’re living in strange times, where it is hard to get the green light for original concepts because executives only want to vote with their wallets when a big brand name is attached.
It’s understandable, especially regarding a CGI-heavy movie franchise, because those same media honchos stand to lose much more money.
(Universal Pictures/Screenshot)
Scarlett Johanson, Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, and Rupert Friend are A-list actors. However, getting them to sign on for Jurassic World Rebirth was probably easy because of the brand name alone.
At least, that’s what I’m telling myself after watching the official trailer. It looks more like Deep Blue Sea than Jurassic Park, which isn’t a good look.

Netflix's Shark Thriller With the Stephen King Stamp of Approval Seemingly Reaches a Glorious Record
In the summer of 2024, France hosted the Olympic Games in Paris, bringing millions of people to the City of Lights. The same year, Netflix released a shark thriller that, similarly to the sports event, held a triathlon in the capital where the participants were in danger because of a giant shark and her offspring.
Under Paris premiered on June 5, 2024, on Netflix and it has been a resounding success. The shark thriller debuted at the top of the charts with massive numbers, raking in 40.9 million views in its first week alone. For the week between Jan. 20 and Jan. 26, Under Paris continued its dominance in sixth place, adding 1 million views more, Tudum confirms.

Originally conceived as a sci-fi thriller with philosophical undertones, Species emerged as one of 1995’s weirdest monster movies.
The early 90s digital effects revolution birthed many monsters. Sam Neill and Laura Dern were menaced by velociraptors in the ground-breaking Jurassic Park in 1993. Tom Sizemore and Penelope Ann Miller were chased around a museum by a rhino-like behemoth in The Relic (1996). Samuel L Jackson was rudely interrupted mid-monologue by an intellectual shark in Deep Blue Sea (1999).
Few monster movies were as eclectically cast or as zany as 1995’s Species. Somehow, director Roger Donaldson managed to convince such acting greats as Ben Kingsley, Forest Whitaker and Alfred Molina to appear as members of a specialist team on the trail of a randy human-alien hybrid monster (Natasha Henstridge) seducing assorted men in Los Angeles.
It’s all delightful B-movie hokum, even if the film’s classier elements – the quality cast, the design of...

You guys really seem to be digging on Michael Crichton huh? Well let’s look at what almost stopped his adaptations from happening. After a heck of a run from his adaptations both good and mediocre, Sphere would be a big enough bomb that it would follow with two straight sub-par adaptations before a quiet death of his worked being put on the big screen. The movie should have been a no doubt success with stars like Dustin Hoffman, Sam Jackson, Sharon Stone and a more than capable, Oscar winning, director in Barry Levinson. What we would end up with is one of the biggest bombs of the late 90s and a movie that is derided or outright forgotten from the annals of 90s cinema. Was it the cast, the story, or the general public being over Chricton things that didn’t have dinosaurs in it that was the culprit.

2003's Open Water shark movie is based on actual events surrounding the disappearance of an American couple scuba diving in the shark-infested waters around the Great Barrier Reef off the coast of Queensland, Australia. The movie was written and directed by Chris Kentis, and produced by Kentis' wife Laura Lau — both avid divers. The couple shot the film over the span of two years, and they funded the project with $130,000 of their own money. The movie became a sleeper hit, upended the Killer Shark genre, and went on to earn over $54 million worldwide.
The Open Water shark movie tells the terrifying story of a couple, Daniel Kintner (Daniel Travis) and Susan Watkins (Blanchard Ryan), who go on a diving expedition and find themselves stranded 20 miles offshore. What makes Open Water a different type of killer shark movie than say, The Meg franchise or Deep Blue Sea, is that it's based...

Christopher Abbott was the first actor that Leigh Whannell spoke to for the titular role in Wolf Man, and while the project changed hands for a period of time, the universe brought the star and filmmaker back together in the end.
In Whannell’s long-awaited follow-up to his widely acclaimed The Invisible Man (2020), Abbott plays Blake Lovell, a writer turned stay-at-home girl dad, who, in a bid to save his marriage, convinces his journalist wife, Charlotte (Julia Garner), to temporarily relocate from San Francisco to his childhood home in rural Oregon. Charlotte reluctantly agrees to the change of scenery, but just as soon as their moving truck arrives in the remote area, the Lovell family is attacked by something.
From there, Blake discovers a wound on his arm, and he quickly begins to degenerate in heartbreaking fashion, mirroring the experience of losing a loved one to a sudden (or yearslong) terminal illness.

Seaview, the Tony Award winning production company behind such Broadway shows as Stereophonic, Romeo + Juliet, Once Upon a Mattress and All In and recent Off Broadway stagings of Hold Onto Me Darling and Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, has acquired Manhattan’s historic Tony Kiser Theater, formerly owned by the Second Stage Theater company.
The sale, which was effective January 1, 2025, will see a “refreshing” of the 296-seat Off Broadway venue located in the city’s midtown Theater District and a rebranding from Tony Kiser Theater to Studio Seaview. While the Off Broadway designation will remain – Broadway venues must have at least 500 seats – the acquisition transforms the space from a non-profit venue into a commercial theater.
The first production at Studio Seaview will be directed by Sam Gold and debut in Spring 2025, to be announced shortly. Seaview has a longstanding relationship with Gold, having recently collaborated on Broadway’s...
