"Batman: The Animated Series" is one of the most celebrated animated shows of all time, certainly when it comes to cartoons based on superheroes. Bruce Timm's show redefined Batman to a new generation, with an exquisite Art Deco style, and one of the best voice cast ever. After the end of the hugely successful show, there were many different directions Warner Bros. Animation could have gone with the Caped Crusader. Several ideas were explored, including a teenage Batman cartoon. Before moving forward with what would ultimately become "Batman Beyond," Timm's futuristic take on the character, there was another show in contention, one based on a big comics crossover from the '90s — "No Man's Land."
"No Man's Land" was a big crossover across the many Batman titles of 1999. The story took place after a massive earthquake struck Gotham City, leading to the government evacuating most of the city,...

Saturday morning cartoons are a staple of television that has been lost as streaming sites become more and more popular. However, the tradition of airing cartoons on Saturday and Sunday mornings lasted from the '60s to most of the '90s. Even though most children don't watch open television anymore, this tradition still continues on some networks, and sites like YouTube often offer dedicated channels solely for beloved cartoons of yesteryear.
Since a lot of people grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, it makes sense that some of the most beloved animated series come from this programming. From oldies like Tom & Jerry to epic superhero shows like X-Men: The Animated Series, these cartoons will forever live in fans' hearts. They make great nostalgic viewing, and while adult eyes may look at them differently than younger ones did, they still hold plenty of joys to be revisited.

Bruce Timm is owed a lot of gratitude when it comes to his work at DC. Especially when it comes to Batman, Timm has often managed to outdo himself, especially when it came to shows like Caped Crusader and Batman: The Animated Series. It would feel like a dream come true if the creator were given control of a live-action Batman film.

In an interview with Den of Geek, the writer was able to talk about what his Batman live-action film would be like if he was given the chance, and what his opinion about those films is, given the rich history that they have.

Superheroes thrive in animation. The medium is uniquely positioned to capture the visual possibilities and sheer imagination of comic books without having to compromise anything. It's the reason the highest-rated superhero show of all time on IMDb is a cartoon. As we have seen time and time again, from the masterpiece that is "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" to the gripping drama of "X-Men '97," animation can serve these stories in a way that live-action can't.
Still, that doesn't mean every effort is a home run. For every "Batman: The Animated Series," there's a "Batman Unlimited." While the '90s saw plenty of masterful cartoons based on superheroes, even Marvel ones with "X-Men: The Animated Series" and "Spider-Man," there was still something missing — The Avengers. So, in the late '90s, Fox Kids decided to fix this grave mistake and create an Avengers cartoon. Before the show could get greenlit, however,...

There are plenty of Batman cartoons out there, from the superlative "Batman: The Animated Series" to the underrated 2004 series "The Batman" to the new and fresh "Batman: Caped Crusader." But there's another cartoon even the most ardent Bat-fans may not have heard of — because it was never actually made.
"Gotham High" would've shown Bruce Wayne's teenage years as he attends high school alongside Batman's future villains, who all already resemble their costumed selves. Pitched in 2009 or so, the series never made it past the concept stage. Warner Bros. had previously floated a teen Batman cartoon in the late '90s to cash in on "Buffy The Vampire Slayer." That resulted in "Batman Beyond," a cyber-noir imagining a future where an aged Bruce Wayne trains teenager Terry McGinnis to be a new Dark Knight.

The 97th Academy Awards took place on the second of March at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony celebrated some of the finest work in cinema last year – whether it was Anora‘s five wins or Adrien Brody winning Best Actor, the Oscars honored a diverse range of talent and storytelling. While fans were happy to see their favorites lift the golden trophy, others felt like many deserving candidates were snubbed this year. Either way, the Oscars 2025 was a night of celebration and utter excellence.

Warner Bros. Games is unfortunately in a pretty complicated spot. Recently, it was revealed they canceled a Flash video game and indefinitely delayed Monolith's Wonder Woman after a big creative reboot. Besides, support for Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League recently ended as the title failed to meet expectations.
So how does Warner's video game division come out of such a grim spot? Well, by turning on the Bat-Signal and waiting for salvation, of course. That's right: It appears DC is gearing up for a big comeback at the hands of their most beloved character.

In the last 30 years, there have been a ton of incredible Batman stories for DC fans to salivate over. However, none are as beloved as Batman: The Animated Series. The 1992 series was made famous by its mature storylines, comic-accurate art style, and incredible voice cast. The latter of which included Kevin Conroy's Dark Knight and Mark Hamill’s Joker. Since the Dcau ended, a shared universe featuring shows like Batman Beyond and Justice League, Btas has been immortalized with new comic books, action figures, and Funko Pops. Now Funko has returned with their latest Pop collection based on the iconic Animated Series.

The first Arkham game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, exploded with popularity when it was first released in 2009, and Rocksteady’s last installment to the series, Batman: Arkham Knight, was the fastest-selling game of 2015. The game sold over 5 million units by October of that year.

Rocksteady Studios, developers of the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series and commercial flop Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, are reportedly working on a new game inspired by the Batman Beyond animated series.
The rumor comes by way of social media user Lunatic Ignus, a somewhat reliable gaming insider who claims that the animated series will serve as a foundation for the video game trilogy. Although the game will not be based on the show's animation style, storylines from it could be expanded upon.
Ignus also claims that the game is being developed exclusively for PlayStation, which would mark a major shift in Rocksteady's approach as a multiplatform studio. To date, all of Rocksteady's games — from 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum to 2024's Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League — have been released on at least Xbox, PlayStation, and PC. Quick Links 25 Years Ago, Lobo Was Brought to Life A Sad Ending for DC's Lobo, Most Wanted Antihero
The pale-skinned, leather-jacket-wearing, motorcycle-riding bounty hunter from space is finally having his day in the Dcu. After years of wanting to play the part, actor Jason Momoa will be playing Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow movie. DC fans are excited and have reason to be — aside from a supporting role in the second season of SyFy’s Krypton (2019), there has been no depiction of the character in a live-action space.
On the other hand, he’s come alive in various animated projects throughout the years, like the 90’s Superman cartoon, the Batman Beyond series, Justice League, and numerous straight-to-release Dcau titles. Not to mention... the DC Lego movies. Would you believe me if I told you that there was a Lobo show? One of which Warner Brothers is still not proud of?...

James Gunn has delivered a brilliant animated beginning to the Dcu with Creature Commandos. The show, as is the case with some of Gunn’s other projects, took some very obscure characters from the DC canon and thrust them into the limelight with a brilliant story and an engaging soundtrack.

James Gunn revealed that the success of X-Men ’97, according to him, was because it did not chase after trends, and instead delivered something unique, which is also something that the Dcu would like to do. However, this was the director’s justification for not reviving any of the old, non-dcu, non-dceu animated shows, such as Justice League Unlimited or Batman Beyond.

Quick Links Who Was Will Friedle in Trojan War? Trojan War Gave Friedle's Brad a High-Octane Night
One of the hottest debates will always rage over who's the best Batman. Live-action fans are torn between Michael Keaton and Christian Bale. Of course, Zack Snyder fans love Ben Affleck's Dark Knight. On the cartoon front, Kevin Conroy stands atop the list. But Will Friedle is another iconic name associated with the genre due to his role, not as Bruce Wayne, but as Terry McGinnis from Batman Beyond.
Many loved how Friedle went dark and bleak, switching things up from his other most famous role: Eric Matthews on Boy Meets World. Interestingly, Friedle had a hilarious role in a 1997 teenage rom-com, Trojan War, that didn't go quite as dark as Terry, but just far enough to subvert what he was as Eric: a clumsy charmer. Warning: Spoilers for Batgirl #3!Few members of the Bat-Family are as similar to Batman as Batgirl. There's a reason why Bruce Wayne adopted Cassandra Cain, and it's not just because he knows she's the one Bat-Family hero who'd destroy him in a fight. It's because out of everyone in the family, Bruce and Cass are the most alike.
Cassandra Cain even shares Batman's controversial identity theory, as illustrated in Batgirl #3 by Tate Brombal, Takeshi Miyazawa, Mike Spicer, and Tom Napolitano. Cass is having a heated conversation with a reluctant ally, her mother Lady Shiva, when they are interrupted by the adoration of the Order of Shiva. To address Shiva's followers, Cass puts her mask back on, with the inner monologue reading, "identity."
Though small and subtle, this moment implies that Cass sees her Batgirl identity as her real identity, not just a secret identity, not dissimilar to theories revolving around...

The Batman franchise has seen its fair share of adaptations over the years. The Dark Knight has appeared on-screen in movies, TV shows, and numerous animated depictions. Every depiction captured a wide range of genres. There was the action hero Ben Affleck from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), the mystery lead Robert Pattinson from The Batman (2022), and the comedian Will Arnett from The Lego Batman (2017). All of those clashing portrayals came within six years of each other, and each revealed a different side of Gotham's determined protector.

Marvel and DC Comics have both cultivated fandom with a shared universe between series. This web of continuity entangles young minds, who come to see the comics not merely as pulp adventures, but gateways to a whole other world whose history they could study and master. Then, superheroes took over 21st century Hollywood by importing this same storytelling model. But the first major superhero cinematic universe debuted on the small screen, not the silver one. Yes, before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was the DC Animated Universe (Dcau). A series of interconnected cartoons with overlapping cast and crew, the Dcau ran for 14 years from 1992 to 2006.
That long run would've been impossible without the people who made these cartoons. The first Dcau cartoon, "Batman: The Animated Series," was co-created by Bruce Timm and Eric Radomski. Timm's distinctive art style (like Jack Kirby meets pin-up girl posters) became the Dcau standard.

Michael Keaton returns as Bruce Wayne in an exciting fan trailer that shows what his cancelled Batman Beyond movie could have been like. Ben Affleck played Batman in the Dceu. However, both Keaton and George Clooney reprised their versions of the Dark Knight in 2023's The Flash. According to Kevin Smith, a Keaton Batman Beyond movie would have been made if The Flash was successful. Since the film bombed at the box office, becoming one of the lowest-grossing entries among all Dceu movies, Keaton's Batman Beyond movie was never made.
Dr FlashPoint shared a concept trailer that imagines Michael Keaton's cancelled Batman Beyond movie.
The trailer features many of the characters present in the iconic animated franchise, such as the villains Shriek, the Royal Flush Gang, and even the Joker. The fan trailer uses 13 Reasons Why actor Brandon Flynn as Terry McGinnis, the title Dark Knight of the Batman Beyond franchise.

Olivia Hussey, who left an indelible mark on cinema and television through diverse works ranging from Romeo and Juliet to Black Christmas to Jesus of Nazareth has passed away. She was 73.
Olivia Hussey garnered widespread acclaim and a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer for portraying the titular Capulet in what is considered one of the best Shakespeare adaptations, 1968’s Romeo and Juliet. But she soon found a home in genre and horror movies, landing the lead role in Bob Clark’s slasher classic Black Christmas. It was here that Hussey played Jess Bradford, who would actually be one of the earliest examples of the “final girl”, paving the way for the likes of Halloween’s Laurie Strode, A Nightmare on Elm Street’s Nancy Thompson, Scream’s Sidney Prescott, and countless others.

Olivia Hussey has died at the age of 73. The actress was best-known for portraying one of the two ill-fated protagonists in director Franco Zeffirelli's legendary 1968 version of Romeo and Juliet, for which she won the Golden Globe (Most Promising Newcomer) thanks to her mesmerizing performance as Juliet Capulet. Hussey also lent her lovely voice to Superman: The Animated Series, and she's widely beloved by die-hard fans of the horror genre for her work on Black Christmas (more on these appearances later).
Hussey was only 17 years old when Romeo & Juliet began its theatrical run, and controversy courted the young thespian because she appeared topless on-screen during the movie's infamous love scene with Romeo Montague (Leonard Whiting). The news of Hussey’s death was announced on Instagram and reads as follows:

Olivia Hussey, known in part for playing one of the two leads in the 1968 feature film adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, has passed away. She was 73 years old.
The San Francisco Chronicle reported that Hussey died due to cancer. Filmmaker Marc Huestis confirmed her passing, telling the outlet, “I just heard some sad, sad news. I adored her. She had so much love, and was the most beautiful Juliet ever. On screen and in real life she exuded love and life.”

We all needed an alternative to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sorry, Feige, but it just hasn’t felt the same since Avengers: Endgame. I know we needed to start from the bottom in order to build credible characters once more, but you won’t be achieving the same levels of fan hype from a 10-year build out of three (let’s be real — nothing in the last six years that has been theatrically released blows fans’ minds). Hopefully, Doomsday and/or Secret Wars will change that, but for now, James Gunn’s Dcu is looking real nice.
An entirely different slew of characters that desperately need a second chance on the big screen combined with the mind that brought us the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. Let’s be real. Before Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, or Rocket were on the big screen, nobody knew or cared who those characters were. Gunn...

2024's Batman Beyond fan movie has provided a perfect Dcu casting I didn't know I needed. Inspired by the classic animated Batman Beyond series that ran for three seasons between 1999-2001, Lumis Entertainment has created a short film imagining what a live-action movie could look like starring DC's Terry McGinnis as The Dark Knight of the future in Neo Gotham However, the actor chosen to play Terry couldn't be better and deserves to be Batman Beyond one day in an official project from DC Studios and Warner Bros.
Lumis Entertainment's Batman Beyond: Year One is written and directed by Michael Yu. In the short film, Terry McGinnis balances meeting someone new with his secret life as Batman protecting New Gotham and receiving guidance from his mentor Bruce Wayne. To that end, this younger Batman of the future is played by Ryan Potter, whom I now absolutely want to see...

DC Studios may not be known for its festive tone, but the company is certainly saying season's greetings with the recent release of Creature Commandos. The latest team-up story to be penned by James Gunn and the first installment in the newly-minted Dcu, Max's newest superhero show is filled with Easter eggs and new revelations about Gunn and Peter Safran' rebooted continuity. Not only that, but Creature Commandos is just as much fun as fans would expect, quickly introducing a team of obscure villains who waste no time committing a plethora of entertaining crimes. Moreover, the appearance of one villain in particular, Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), should be especially cathartic for longtime Gothamites, as the character's inclusion in the series offers a subtle nod to another classic DC series, Batman Beyond.

2024 has proved it's high time for DC to adapt Batman Beyond into a live-action movie, and the stage is in many ways perfectly set for this to come to fruition. The original Batman Beyond series ran from 1999-2001, with the animated Batman show exploring the future of Gotham after Bruce Wayne is forced to retire from his superhero role, and the mantle is instead handed down to Terry McGinnis. While the character has returned since then, the potential of his appearance in live-action hasn't been formally capitalized on, despite prior efforts to do so.
However, recent history has provided some of the most solid examples of why Batman Beyond mor than deserves its time in the live-action big-screen spotlight. The first of these came with Terry's second proper animated movie appearance after Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker, as the Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths movie trilogy saw the character reappear,...

2024 brought us back to Gotham City as drawn by Bruce Timm with "Batman: Caped Crusader." Timm was co-creator of the much-beloved "Batman: The Animated Series" back in the 1990s. "Caped Crusader" has the same art style and banks on nostalgia for "The Animated Series," but it's not a sequel, a prequel, or otherwise connected to that show at all.
"Batman: The Animated Series" modeled its Gotham City on the 1930s, from the cars, clothes, and architecture, but it was officially set in the present day despite the timeless feel. "Batman: Caped Crusader" goes one step further and is literally, not just spiritually, set in the 1940s. The overlapping characters also have different designs; Batman's costume looks more like the "Golden Age of Comics" suit and less like "Bronze Age" one as he did in "Batman: The Animated Series." This Caped Crusader has a new voice too (Hamish Linklater taking over...

Ever since I was a kid, I adored the Batman Beyond animated series, and growing up, it's always been a mystery why the character has never been adapted with their incredible suit into live-action before the Dcu. There is nothing that quite compares to the joy of watching Saturday morning cartoons as a kid in the 1990s, and Batman Beyond came right at the tail end of that decade, offering yet another incredible superhero story for kids to enjoy.
However, the hero in Batman Beyond was no ordinary Batman. While Batman had existed for decades, and the hero was well known and loved by many, Batman Beyond was a brand-new hero created just before the turn of the millennium when everyone was looking to the future, as a way to explore what a futuristic Batman could be like. Batman Beyond's futuristic version of Gotham has been imagined in live-action thanks to a fantastic fan film, over two decades after the animated show's conclusion. Batman Beyond was a highly acclaimed installment in the timeline of DC's Animated Universe and ushered in a now-fan-favorite variation of Gotham's Dark Knight. The Dcau continuity was home to some of the best comic book stories ever told in shows like Batman: The Animated Series and Justice League. However, this beloved universe wasn't just about honoring DC Comics characters who already existed. The Dcau created a handful of heroes and villains who have since become comic staples in the last three decades. One of the biggest examples of this is Batman Beyond. High school student Terry McGinnis took on the role of a futuristic Dark Knight in his own self-titled series in 1999. Warning! Contains Spoilers For Batman: The Brave and the Bold #18!
It seems like Batman is a truly unstoppable force of nature. That no matter what crime or issue he comes up against, he'll always be able to solve it. This is why it's so surprising that DC is confirming that Batman's biggest weakness is something as simple as getting older.
The ultimate weakness of Bruce Wayne was exposed in Batman: The Brave and the Bold #18's story "Doubt" by Christian Ward and Patric Reynolds. This story showcases a brand-new villain, known as Benjamin Blik, and the big thing that makes him dangerous is his ability to inspire doubt in anyone he comes across with just a few well-placed words.
Batman is a pretty stoic person, and it's hard to imagine him giving into doubt, but when he's affected by Benjamin's powers, he instantly begins to stress over whether he should continue being Batman.

This story contains Major Spoilers for Joker: Folie Deux, now showing in theaters
Leave it to Batman to come to the defense of one of his biggest adversaries in an ironic twist. One former Bruce Wayne actor insists the widely panned Joker: Folie Deux is "overhated", but, like most, isn't a fan of the film's controversial ending.
Via his TikTok account, Gotham star David Mazouz shared his thoughts on Folie Deux after seeing the movie. Though Mazouz sympathized with the fans who expressed their hatred for the Joker sequel, he gave director Todd Phillips credit for taking a bold approach to the story. "If you think about this movie as a character study of somebody who has completely blended art with reality to the point of insanity, I think it's interesting." However, Mazouz admitted he didn't like the ending, saying "No spoilers, but the ending...Gotham's done that before. It just has!
